How are so many people skipping over this??? The Ravens are over the cap and were able to make the trade, people need to stop saying the Bills couldn’t have made this trade. There are so many ways for teams to work around the cap to make something like this work. Also, how did the narrative change so fast in so many peoples eyes-somehow Beane went from being amazing with the cap and the draft to Beane needs to be fired! I think i got whiplash from watching so many people flip to that!

He doesn't need to be fired. But he does deserve criticism for how the DL has been structured and how the defense has fallen apart.

They may be a year away but why should that stop them from acquiring talent now.  The window is going to slam shut if he pays Milano, Edmunds, and/or Allen next year.  They can shed some cap by cutting Murphy, Hughes, and a couple others.  They will have enough room to acquire a proven veteran now versus saving those picks and rolling the dice in the 2021 draft.

Are you kidding me? Tip my hat to the Ravens, but it would be nice if we were a little more aggressive on something that would’ve dramatically helped our defense. But, I guess he never played for the Panthers so we would’ve never been an option.

But hey! We got Ahmad Gooden!

Right! We would never make a big trade with Minnesota! :wallbash:

What’s your point? Are you implying that because we traded for Diggs, that’s more representative of how they operate vs. their penchant for bringing in former panthers? One has happened at a far more disproportionate rate than the other. These guys anchor to players they know and are comfortable with more times than not. It’s like with Ralph and his hiring of GMs and coaches.

First about the Ravens.  I'm interested to see how they get in under the cap.  They probably got a few days to do it with Covid rules and exact day of

contract signing etc.   They are going to have some big decisions coming up next year with their FAs.  I was a little shocked they made this move

and I'm almost thinking they are in one of those "all in" moves this year.

The second bolded part is not that easy.  During the season (once vet contracts are guaranteed) there are not many moves a team can make to free

up cap dollars.

1.  Restructure:  The most common.  There is risk and if you do it sparingly it can be very useful.  Use it too much (PHI Eagles as an example) and

it becomes like a "payday loans" spiral.

2.  Trade a Vet Player:  It clears most of their cap in many cases but you only do that if you have the depth.  Most times you do eat some Dead Cap.

3.  Waive non-vet players:  Teams usually don't get too much money this way.  Non-Vets are usually cheap and you still have to replace their roster spot.

That's pretty much it.  During the offseason by far the biggest way to free up dollars is dump expensive vets who have a small Dead Cap.

That could become problematic if you been "restructuring" a bunch of vets and the Dead money is high.  Once again I'm taking a shot at the Eagles.

Personally I'm not a fan of restructuring when you have a rookie QB (another thing the Eagles did) because it will bite you when he gets his big contract.  Beane

was doing a good job with the money BUT the DL now has to get fixed.  That's done by either doing deals like this OR getting your players to step up

big time.  I'm also interested how Beane and McDermott handle this in the coming weeks.  Trade deadline is coming fast.

FWIW.

Hell, I could have told you that.

Murphy, Hughes, and Addison all have cap hits over 9 million

Jefferson and Butler are over 6

And for what production?

Beane and McDermott did a lousy job of replacing players lost on the DL. They also should have moved on from Murphy (I would add Hughes, but there would be too many to replace).

For everyone incessantly whining about Beane, McDermott, and us not making a deal for Ngakoue have you actually looked at the broader spectrum of this? First off, we have less than $5,000,000 in cap space at this point and can't fit Ngakoue in for the rest of the season without cutting a couple of other guys. Could we cut people? Sure, but what if he gets hurt and you just cut your depth at the position? Then you're really screwed. Second, we have other guys with contracts coming up after this season. The salary cap is coming down, we just don't completely know by how much yet. The talk is about a $20,000,000 drop due to the circumstances faced this year though. Do you think we are going to re-sign him at $20,000,000 per season next year in light of that? No, we wouldn't. Third, is Ngakoue the missing link for this team to win a SB? Sorry, no he is not Bills fans. This would be a remainder of a season rental trying to put a Band-Aid on something that needs stitches. Yes, he has 5 sacks this year. He averages about 9 a season for his career. He also only averages about 30 tackles per season, which means outside of his 9 takedowns of the QB he is making 21 other stops over 16 full games. He's solid, but not elite. He's also lightweight for a 4-3 DE at under 250lbs. The Ravens are in a place, with the defense they already have, that he just makes sense there and scheme wise as well. He will get to be a stand up edge rusher now and I always thought that was his best fit.

What if he gets hurt and we lost our depth? What if our depth (traffic cone level players)  get hurt?

Don’t trade for good players because what if they get hurt is a silly argument. Teams like the Ravens and Chiefs understand that stars win games. The Bills are trying to build a All Time JAGS team and it’s finally caught up to them.

Seasons over I guess then

The Ravens are in "win now" mode so this trade makes sense for them. Soon they will have to pay Lamar and they will also have some holes to fill next offseason with the fact being no one truly knows how much money will be available. This may amount to nothing more than a rental for a 3rd and a 5th in hopes of winning the SB. I don't see Ngakoue as the missing link for us so this really doesn't bother me.

And we arent?

Twice Ngakoue has been available and twice Beane was not the winning bid. Beane has set a threshold of value and it was exceeded by a competing team. I don't like the way our defense has looked this far but I attribute that to having no preseason rather than Beane's incompetence. I don't see Beane as an in season trade chaser.

BTW no one is confusing today's Ravens D with that of the Ray Lewis/Ed Reed era. It's the Ravens who are desperate.

I guess they looked at the 2nd and 5th as a sunk cost and Yannick probably wanted out. So get back something other than a comp pick in 2022.

agreed

a 3 and 5 is better than a 3 in 2 years if you even get a comp pick

They made a reasonable move, the season went sideways, and they got a bit more value than if they let him walk -

it’s never the dream outcome but it’s a totally reasonable move that I’d be fine with in trying to maximize our chances.

We have fans that won’t support the idea of us being a contender until after we are in the game.

problem is at that point you are past the window of optimizing your roster

Bingo

Ravens are basically going into reckless abandon trying to win now

Their future after 2 years is definitely up in the air

The Ravens are definitely desperate as my spec is they have lost twice in the first round of the playoffs, and do not think they can keep up with the Chiefs.  He’s demanding a new contract next year so they either dump him as he’ll want serious $, or in a Covid cap year they will have to purge a number of contracts and gave up resources now to trade for him this year.

It was not worth it IMO.
