This is why extending Dawkins had to be the #1 priority this past offseason.  Imagine having to find a LT on top of a RT and another OG.  Yes, we could have tagged Dawkins, but that would’ve dramatically increased his contract.  Beane did very well.

Feliciano getting hurt more less gave them a chance to put Ford at G without having to admit they were wrong in their dogged determination to keep him at T... But still, keeping him there is a good sign.

Some decent right tackle options in the draft like you said, so that may be the right way to go about it.

Not surprising. And if he’s best suited at left guard, keep him there and let him develop. Try to find someone else at right guard until Feliciano comes back, be it Bates or Boettger.

Feliciano is a junk yard dog, Ford plays like a kitty cat. I will be surprised if Ford gets even 3 pancakes for the whole season. Watch the running attack get better just from having Feliciano back in the lineup.

It's going to be a lot harder to bring in decent players at a decent price next year than it has been so far for Beane. Right now we have $2.8M estimated 2021 cap space and the rollover will likely be around $4M or less. That's just about enough to sign the rookies we draft, and 

 

We actually looked reasonably healthy, but this COVID thing destroyed next year's cap, and that will affect a lot of teams badly, including us. If we want a good RT next year we may have to draft one early. The one good thing is that guys who sign contracts next year will have to sign low. There just aren't a lot of teams with money. We might get a guy, maybe even Daryl Williams, to sign a team-friendly one-year deal, but I'm pretty sure Williams would like to avoid that if possible, having just signed a one-year team-friendly deal this year. 

 

There'll be ways to cut a bit here and there. But they have a lot of things they'll need to do just replacing Milano, Josh Norman, Murphy, Levi Wallace, Bojorquez, Boettger, Feliciano, Winters, Daryl Williams, Nsekhe, Tyler Kroft, McKenzie, Andre Roberts and Matt Barkley. Team depth will likely take a major hit and new holes will be developed and we're likely to take a hit in terms of total talent if things stay as they are as far as expected cap level.

The thing is that this will affect all 32 teams and teams that are in cap trouble now will be worse off than the Bills.

 

The other part of this equation is player salaries...they will have to expect less if there is a smaller salary pie to share.

 

Thats why nailing those draft picks at positions of need will be so important next year.

He regressed this year as he played fairly well last year.  Resigning him at the time made sure you could keep the same o-line together (Dawkins, Spain, Morse, Feliciano, Ford/Nsekhe) if you wanted to this year.  Continuity they say is important with offensive lines.  It was before the Daryl Williams signing (didn't know what to expect from him) and the Winters signing.  If we cut Spain after this season it's only a 1.5 million dollar cap hit spread out over the next two seasons.  At the worst you're getting great depth at the o-line.  Wish they did the same with LB's.

 Ktulu, I respectfully and I mean that as I like you’re posts disagree Ford plays like a Kitty Kat.  Guys like Paul Alexander (long time O Line coach), Dave Diehl, amd a couple others I respect have commented he’s making the natural shift.  I completely agree with you I like Mongo more than Spain at Guard, amd he’s looked weak this year.  I guess I’m with Barley, I scratched my head at the Spain extension, unless they were worried about Feliciano’s health?  I know the injury was after the contract, but you never know if they had some inside knowledge on Feliciano.  We’ll never know.

 

I like Ford and it’s a possibility he could turn with time into Decastro as an example.  He has a good first step, and coming from someone who coached lineman albeit not anywhere near that level, I can see him working out.  After coaching RB’s and Linebackers, my other position coach was the most fun doing the line.  They have to work as one unit, moreso than any other unit.  At left Guard, he’ll end up pulling left with Dawkins and in many cases Morse.  Feliciano is best suited on the right as he is somewhat on an island.  The RT is pulling out to the right, so the RG has a lot of space to cover.  Ford did a very good, not great job on Donald.  That monster was going to get in Allen’s face, but Ford with Morse made it a little harder on the best DT in the NFL, and there isn’t even a close second.

What his salary demands are, and what he's offered on the market, are the big issue.  The Bills will definitely want to bring him back.

I thought he looked below average vs Donald and nothing really stood out to me watching replays of the Raiders game. I like Ford and I guess he might need a little time to get used to playing LG. Time will tell, I guess.
