The Next Pandemic: SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19

President Donald Trump's mic was on before he delivered a speech on the US response to tackling the coronavirus outbreak, which has infected over 1,300 people and killed 38 others.

"Oh f****" Trump said before delivering the speech. "Uh oh, I've got a pen mark."

He then asked his staff for "any white stuff."

Thanks for being 6 week late on controlling this.

What was he doing?  At  Mar-a-Lago alone - Golfing, hosting Super Bowl Parties, golfing, golfing with some Nationals players.

He even took a trip to India and brought some of his family on the trip.

President Donald Trump’s new European travel restrictions have a convenient side effect: They exempt nations where three Trump-owned golf resorts are located.

NBC news reporting on the travel ban. Paraphrased:

”People are questioning why it does not extend to UK or Ireland.  Some believe it’s because Trump has resorts in Ireland, and that it’s a reward to the UK for exiting the European Union, something that Trump supported.”

I keep thinking there are limits to how incredibly disingenuous and dangerous these people are, and am constantly surprised at how there are no limits at all.

Trump does think that way though. Corrupt, greedy people like Trump always think of their own interests first

From what I read here it seems that republicans believed what Trump said: Covid is not a problem in the USA, it is only a problem in Europe due to European mismanagent,  so the solution is just to shut down flights from Europe.

Who says that the government is wrong is addressed as "democrat", and his/her criticism is considered a free attack to the President and not based on scientific evidence.

Let me say something, in Italy was the opposite, because the "left" wing is in charge.

So the right wing was asking stronger measures and the "left wing party" was  addressing them as people who want to make free criticism to the government and exploit the situation to rise their status among the citizens.

Now the reality is that who is in charge does not want to stop a country, does not want stop the economy, people in charge don't want to take unpopular decisions for something "little more than a flu". They prefer to say that the covid is a problem "elsewhere", in Italy we said that the problem was only in China, Germany is saying that the problem is only in Italy, USA is saying that the problem is only in Europe.

Until the hospitals will begin to be full of people that need machines to be able to breath.

It happened in China, it is happening here in Italy, it will happen in France, Germany, and USA.

And forgive my english, sometimes is not so easy writing in a foreign language.

Your papers have mischaracterized what Trump has said.

All you needed to do was watch Trump last night. He (sort of) banned travel from Europe (though they walked back this ban after his speech) and said nothing specific about what is being done in the United States to control community spread.

The two hour press daily press conference doesn't cover that?

No. The entire country was tuned in last night to watch the leader of the free world and he mischaracterized his own travel ban and gave zero specifics on what is being done in the United States to control spread.

In order for him to do that within the confines of the speech, he would have to declare martial law and usurp local and state government control.

I disagree - see Merkel's speech a couple of days ago. That's a real leader.

Good luck everyone I'm signing off this thread for awhile.

A response team led by a man who saw an HIV infection spread so he could first pray about the idea of safe needle exchange, which has only been proven to work time and time again. You're utterly insane if you don't think Trump was completely blindsided by all of this. He's admitted as much! He said the entire world was blindsided, which is actual horseshit.

Trump banned travel from China before anyone else in the world.  If everyone had done that, we'd be far better off.

And if China had told the world back in December when they knew, much less restricted travel from Wuhan...

Everyone should take it seriously.  Not panic, but use common sense (which, admittedly, isn't so common).

Is travel from Scotland restricted?  Because he owns resorts there as well.

The effects on everyday life will increase. My neighbor is a renowned scientist at the University of Rochester. He owns this biotech company that has made some significant discoveries. I will try to catch up with him this weekend to see how optimistic he is. It does not sound like it is THE cure, but any type of deterrent could slow the panic.

ROC biotech company says lab tests of former cancer drug confirm it stops COVID-19

by Jane Flasch-13 WHAM NEWS

Wednesday, March 11th 2020

Rochester, N.Y. - A vaccine for COVID-19 is likely years away. Yet a drug tested in a lab three weeks ago has been found to stop the virus from spreading from cell to cell.

The stunning announcement comes from a Rochester biotech company called OyaGen, Inc. The company is seeking to fast-track the formula to treat people who become infected.

"A treatment right now is the priority," said Dr. Harold Smith of OyaGen. He added the drug already has FDA approval for another use.

The tests were conducted at the federal government's integrated research facility in Fort Detrick, Md. A drug called Oya 1 had already been proven in lab tests there to be effective against Ebola.

Nothing the administration has done to date regarding the Coronavirus had gone uncriticized, so no surprise the speech last night was criticized as well.

Really don't want to see martial law implemented, so people need to do their part.  Clean your hands well (that last part is what gets everybody) and don't be a putz.  Unless you're elderly &/or immunocompromised you are almost surely going to survive this.  But take reasonable steps to prevent yourself from contracting it & more importantly from passing it on.  The person 2 people down the chain that you pass it to could very well be someone that this is life threatening towards.

Don't hoard, but be prepared.  Our society is set up to allow an unprecedented level of teleconferencing / working from home.  If you can do that, do so.  If your job doesn't allow you to do that, then go to work but be smart.  If everybody actually thinks about the welfare of their neighbor, we'll get through this quicker and more successfully than if they don't.  Do your part & don't worry about whatever action / inaction 45 or Cuomo, or whomever your governor is takes.

The economy is tanking & will take a short term hit.  But we'll recover.  Be smart & get through this people.  We're all in this together.

Does he?  Fascinating to hear from one of the “people” referenced by the crackerjack journalist on NBC.  In related news, some people are saying a European travel ban would have no impact whatsoever on the massive tourism industry in the US, and thus The Trump Organization will be unaffected by the ban.

When I was a kid, we would have called those people ruhtards.

You just killed any argument by trying to use the flu excuse... Go look back at past posts to see why your argument is moot.

Well, it wasn't offered as an argument, only as an observation that for years much the same thing has been happening with little notice when compared to today.  Not only has COVID-19 been around for years, but the flu de jour as well.  See it as a hindsight thing; we should have been gearing up for "tomorrow" for a long time.
