Replay is the devil

I foresaw this in the 80s when the NFL started this crap.  I was the only one of my friends who thought this was a bad idea.

The bylaws of VAR call for it to be implemented for "clear and obvious" errors by the officials.  I'd argue it was used to good effect during the Men's WC in Russia last summer.

However, as some leagues and the most recent use in the women's WC have shown, it's become both a crutch for poor officiating and a way for officials to enforce the rulebook to the proverbial 'T.'  Things like incidental contact, clutching & grabbing, and close Offside are now routinely reviewed.  Hardly "clear and obvious" situations.  Some media members have even been told that officials are instructed to let close Offside situations go uncalled because they now have the benefit of replay.  Again, hardly "clear and obvious."

Totally agree with this. Although even in the Russia world cup there were incidents that I thought got overturned that should have stayed with the on field decision. There was a late Spain goal in a group game by Iago Aspas that was given offside on the field and then overruled and awarded by VAR. It was a mm decision. To me VAR is not there to fix that. I think the same about the Raheem Sterling goal that was disallowed in the dying seconds of the Champions League final this season.

We have VAR in the Premier League from August. They are saying the bar for overturning decisions will be "set very high." I will believe it when I see it, but I certainly hope that is true.

Congratulations to Team USA by the way. I think they were the best team in the tournament. I think England were the second best team in the tournament and it was a shame that the draw necessitated that match up in the semi rather than the final. We are getting closer, but we are not quite there yet. Same is true of our men's side too.... though obviously we are some way ahead of the US on that score.... ?

Appropriated the term, haven't listened to him since like 1990.

It's an accurate term.

Actually it's overused to describe any woman who stands up for herself.

Congratulations on winning the World Cup!

Anyone remember that?   ?

Might be the very first time I have wanted a  US team to lose (except International Hockey when US faced Canada) because they are so unlikable, for a couple reasons.

And you are free and welcome to have those feelings. I don’t dislike the team (and I doubt either of us personally know all about everyone associated withy the program) as much as I dislike that all of sports have gotten political. I try to stay clear of that stuff and think it has no place in my entertainment.

If, at some point, it gets to be too much for me, I’ll vote with my feet (and dollars) and move on, allowing them to kill their Golden Goose.

I think the whole political thing is overblown somewhat. The reporter asked Rapinoe a question knowing what she would answer, to generate this response. It's not like it was a shock that she said what she said, this was all hyped up by the media for the most part.

OTOH, she could have handled her response with a little more class.

Wow... She's (M.Rapinoe) only doing what she sees to be the new norm. She is being led by example.  Now, it is a bad thing?

Yes - if you’re a fan of pro wrestling, she has the potential to turn FIFA into the WWE!

She’s up there with Bobby The Brain Heenan, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Vince McMahon, or the loudest of loud-mouthed villains, only they were amusing - she’s just annoying.

But I understand why Anderson Cooper likes her so much.

You realize the President of this country acts exactly this way.  But yeah, let’s get more mad at a women’s soccer player than the leader of the free world.

The same people who hate on Rapione (and I don’t love everything she does) are the same ones making every excuse for DT.  Bunch of hypocrites.  Personally, I think they are both annoying but one actually really won.

Calling Rapinoe out at this point of the game by the people with TDS is like... ? What a blast from past!

But having RDS is acceptable?

I don’t see Trump marching in a parade with a magnum of champagne, screaming “I DESERVE THIS!!!! I DESERVE THIS!!!

And I haven’t seen him calling her out on any talk shows either.  She’s the one who keeps calling him out, trying to prolong her 15 minutes.

As a matter of fact, he hasn’t said a word about Rapinoe, nor should he.  She’s the one who keeps acting like an idiot.

I have no problem with her calling out Trump but why is she kneeling during our national anthem on an international stage?  The sacrifices previous generations have made for her in this country has allowed her to live a privileged life where she could focus on soccer at an early age and pry got a free ride through college.  She just seems like a selfish attention seeker to me.

Who's teaching that being a "selfish attention seeker" pays off... Ie: "wins."

She is just emulating our leaders.  How can you blame her, tell her to stop.  It's proven to work & win.

Now... I agree with you, but she's only doing what she sees as successful.

As someone mentioned earlier,  at this point it's just the media stirring the pot. This nonsense gets more clicks and people talking then actually winning the world cup for the 2nd consecutive time. If you watch or read any news without knowing anything about soccer you would think the team consists of 1 person.

In some cases yes, like the clowns licking the ice cream in the stores and returning it to the freezer.

2018 Men's World Cup generated $6 Billion in revenue. The players received 7%.

2019 Women's World Cup generated $131 Million in revenue. The players received 23%.

I guess countries need to start forcing more people to watch and buy merchandise so that things can be equal.

lot more to the pay structure than world cup revenue..this is very disingenuous...here is a fantastic article with facts , was very enlightening to me

Also, from your article, it appears that the only reason they've generated slightly more revenue in the last few years is because the men didn't make the cup. Prior to that, the  men generated more of the revenue. If the men make their next world cup, not even win just make it, I'd wager their revenue would once again be greater.

As to Rapinoe, is she fighting for equal pay for women or just US Women?

maybe.

I know far more people who will watch the women play and not watch the men play at all.

If I wanted to see players flopping I'd watch professional wrestling.

my statement had nothing to do at all if they should be paid more or less etc..it was simply the article from the National Review is disingenuous.and tries to make the Womens equal pay fight all about World Cup earnings, and only World Cup earnings..and that is just flat out wrong. Both sides of the media unfortunately slant things they way they want .

The mens and womens team are on completely different pay structures..salaries and bonus for women vs strictly bonuses for men etc...there will be lawyers and laws involved that have nothing to do with revenue generation unfortunately.
