Maybe this will cheer up all the "he's too slow" pundits. Smile and enjoy the process guys, he may turn out to be a good one.

https://www.stack.com/a/why-the-40-yard-dash-is-overrated-as-a-test-for-running-backs

As we take a look back at the running back performances from the 2016 season, one thing that stands out is that 3 of the top 4 and 8 of the top 12 "big play" RBs (defined as breaking  runs of 10+ yards) ran 40-Yard Dash times of 4.57 or slower.

  • Elliott – 4.47 (NFL Combine), 48 big plays on 322 carries
  • Howard – 4.59 (hand-timed at Pro Day), 43 big plays on 252 carries
  • Ajayi – 4.57 (NFL Combine), 39 big plays on 260 carries
  • Bell – 4.60 (NFL Combine), 37 big plays on 261 carries
  • McCoy 4.50 (hand-timed at Pro Day), 34 big plays on 234 carries
  • D. Johnson - 4.50 (NFL Combine), 34 big plays on 293 carries
  • D. Murray – 4.43 (NFL Combine), 32 big plays on 293 carries
  • Freeman – 4.58 (NFL Combine), 30 big plays on 227 carries
  • Blount – 4.74 (NFL Combine), 29 big plays on 299 carries
  • Hyde – 4.66 (NFL Combine), 26 big plays on 217 carries
  • Crowell – 4.57 (NFL Combine), 26 big plays on 198 carries
  • Ingram – 4.66 (NFL Combine), 25 big plays on 205 carries

Ferguson and Winovich were there. Obviously the Bills did not view them as highly as the pundits and talking heads. Though, I do believe that Winovich will be the consummate, over achieving Patriot. As defensive minded as I am, Singletary seems like a good choice.

It's not just pundits and talking heads.  The Pats and Ravens took both guys within 10 picks.  They both have a pretty distinguished record when it comes to drafting defensive talent.  So lets not pretend that it's just some Mel Kiper wannabees who valued and wanted those players at that pick.

You are right, but lets not forget that these guys get a lot of hype. I believe that Ferguson may have some issues that concerned the Bills. Winovich should be the classic high intensity guy we see come through every year...he is really going to be hyped up if he does well with Patriots. We will probably hear what geniuses the Pats are. The Bills had to make a choice and they had to get it right. Someone mentioned earlier that McDermott has his own prototype for a DE...whoever that is...we will see.

Fwiw I believe the Pats* moved down after Bills selections in round 3. As stated by Beane, they had another player ranked  closely that they considered before the Singletary pick. We don’t know who that was.The Bills valued other players at that spot too.  The team was deficient at scoring TDs last year and are old at RB. I’m sure this all played into their decision. I don’t think they’re just throwing darts at a board in that war room. There are always options in every round. We will see if their vision for the team works out.

Red zone rushing (aided by Allen scrambles) 68 189 and 13 TDs (7 by Allen) - and that's inside 20.  Sub 3.0 YPC.  Taking out Allen you have 47 carries for 94 yards and 6 TDs.

Inside 5 we had 14 carries for 1 yard and 6 TDs.

The line was improved, we brought in 2 guys who can hopefully help in this area.

Travis Henry with better elusiveness?  That's what I'm seeing.

but not as strong as travis....not that that should matter much. gotta give henry credit  in that he was impossible to tackle once he was past the line.

i am looking forward to watching singletary play. he is unique and i think he will be a very effective player in the league for a long time.

something like, Le'Veon Bell?

that would certainly be a high honor.....even somewhat like LB would be a win.

Wonder if we preferred Montgomery, who was picked shortly before we got our shot.

They had Singletary in for a visit, didn't they? Not sure about Montgomery. I don't get the sense they settled for Singletary.

For sure.  Just effective at moving the chains.  Love to see those TD numbers too.  It’s all about getting in the endzone.  Some guys excel at it.

Not a huge fan of the pick, but love that aspect. NONE of our RB's are very good in the RZ. Shady for obvious reasons and Gore/Yeldon for reasons unbeknownst to me. Kind of like Marshawn being a relatively poor goal to go touchdown producer. This kid definitely seems to have a nose for the plane. I'll give him that much.

And making people miss.  I read something (forgot where) that said he had something like 95 forced missed tackles.  Next best guy had like 60 something.  That’s ridiculous

With all apologies to AD, dude's a witch.

Gettle-Beane is a witch?

Before you take offense remember that Gettleman was a Bills scout from 1986-1993.......some pretty good years.

Times were different then though.

Polian has been on Sirius talking him up and supporting him. Very slowly, with a lot of “uh” and “um”, but positive words....if you are patient enough to hear them.

Time will tell as to the decision. It doesn’t affect my life. We all take our shots in life.

This was the one pick I wasn't crazy about...I hope he turns out to be a good player and Beane is right about him.  I felt that either  Winovich, or Ferguson would have been a better option. I myself wanted Winovich here.  I wouldn't have minded a trade up for Metcalf at this point if the price wasn't too high either....he might bust but prior to the draft, who would have thought he would drop to basically the 3rd round.
