Former Bills Scapegoat DC Dennis Thurman Finds Work After 3 Years

Recommended Posts

Former Bills DC Dennis Thurman has finally found a job as a Defensive Coordinator in Bill Polian’s AAF.

If you remember Thurman was famously the scapegoat for Rex Ryan’s incompetence at running the Bills defense.  He demoted after the 2015 season and replaced by Rob Ryan who turned out to be worse.  Thurman has not coached in the NFL since

I agree that he was DC in name only, but woundn't call him the scapegoat as everyone knew Rex and the 2nd year Rob were running the D.  For the most part don't recall hearing anyone ever try and blame Thruman, everyone blamed the Ryan boys for everything..

Rex made him the scapegoat by demoting him and relaxing his with Robb.

Except he didn't get demoted, he was still the DC and don't recall Rex Thurman in anyway or blaming him for anything.

So if he wasn't demoted and never blamed for anything by Rex or most others in the press (everyone knew Rex was in charge) how exactly was he the scapegoat?

Hummm.... guess I won't be seeing him doing Cowboys post game here on local TV.

I grew up in South Garland in the 70's and 80's when he played cb for the Cowboys..He was a decent cb.

David Lee was named their QB Coach.  The man is a living miracle. Over 40 years of pro-level QB coaching and hardly a single talented QB to hang on the resume.

I thought Romo was his saving grace

Rex never blamed him by name but my understanding is the "we know what really happened" comment after the 10 players Miami debacle was aimed at Dennis Thurman despite the fact that Rob was calling the D. Because the Ryans are never wrong. Period.

Rob is actually doing TV over here in the UK as Sky's main studio analyst. He did a guest spot last year and they seem to have him back as a permanent feature in 2018. He is pretty good at it in truth.

Exactly Rex was feeling a lot of pressure after the #4 ranked defense took a dive.  He obviously wasn’t going to fire himself or his pal Dennis Thurman.  But he did bring Rob Ryan on the staff to basically be the defensive coordinator - whether in title or not.  By most accounts it was seen as a demotion for Thurman.

The first sign of incompetence should have been when they tried to take all 4/3 personnel & change the D to a 3/4 for being a supposed defensive coach you first have to see the forest for the tree's every one was hyped about Rex but he proved he is best suited for where he is now blowing hot air on TV not on a sideline !!

Thurman was nothing but a figure head !!

Sounds like that's where Rob should stay.  Everyone's good at something, and it ain't coaching D for fat Rob.  Beside, he might lose some weight over there when all there is to eat is fish and chips; no chicken wings, no pizza, no barrels of lard.

Ha. There is plenty of food to get fat on in London. Rex was supposed to appear on last mid week's round up and discussion show. They trailed it all through the live Sunday show and then when it came to it they go Baldinger on by video link instead.

Rex was probably a no-show.  He doesn't strike me as dependable; kind of like the guy who is fun to go out drinking with, but don't count on when you need something important done.

I'm surprised the NFL is even somewhat paid attention to over there in England.  Would have thought mostly soccer and rugby.

Had a decent following in the 80s and has been revived by the Wembley games. If I am honest most of the new crowd are London based and under 35, though it has decent followings in certain other metropolitan cities - Bristol and Manchester in particular. 12 years ago when I moved to London it was incredibly rare to find other NFL fans. Now the last three jobs I have had there have been at least 2 others working in my team. The NFL is helped by not competing with soccer. It is a Sunday evening thing UK time after the soccer has finished. Most, though not all, of the NFL fans I know are big soccer guys as well.

Completely agree he was just a figurehead, but didn't view him at all as a scapegoat as everyone around knew Rex was the brains or lack there of behind the defense.  Someone pointed out one instance of Rex maybe throwing Thurman under the bus,  I didn't recall that one, but overall don't recall Rex ever bad mouthing Thurman, seemedeveryone was happy with him beign the figurehead

Yep Thurman was a figurehead.  But any say he had on the defense was eliminated once Robb Ryan came on board.  Many players have said that Robb was basically running the Bills defense?

Why did Rex bring in Robb instead of trusting Dennis Thurman?  Because he knew his arse was on the line.  That’s why I consider Rob coming in as a demotion to Thurman...even if it technically wasn’t on paper

I worked in UK for a while and got tired of town food. I did not have a car but I found a Chinese place withing walking distance. Walked there and ordered some fried noodles and the cook dropped a large tab of lard in wok.  When I got my meal I just dropped it in garbage can and left.

He can find barrels of lard there easily.

...and caving to that Pig Roast's "guest of honor" on the buffet line set this damn club back two years......brother Buffet Rob was the epitome of nepotism....how the 'eff did Schwartz show up with a scheme in mind but ADJUSTED IT to the personnel he had to work with?......and if memory serves me, the results were "palatable"..good to see Thurman has gained employment in whatever capacity....for thick or thin......
