Bills G.M. Brandon Beane: “We have to draft best player available”

Yes it is, but only if the player is a failure. Trading away valuable picks for a total failure means you reached. Doesn't mean it never works out, but you still reached if you gave up a ton for a failure.

That's hindsight which isn't the same thing as drafting a player based on how you grade him as a prospect.

Isn't trading a bunch a picks to move up considered reaching?

Reaching is taking a player higher than you have him graded.

Like, if they have Jackson rated as a late first/early second round prospect, but they trade up to 7 to grab him.

Always BPA. Always.

Unless you need a QB.

He's right.  There's 4.  QB, RG, RT, MLB.  WR could be swapped with RT.  Or Maybe RG, RT, MLB, WR's as the starting positions from the draft and the QB has to sit for a bit.  Which immediately puts Allen in play YUK.

and WR.  I say C, LG, WR, MLB at the very least

Reaching is also giving up more than it was worth to get to where you have him graded, but I mostly agree with your definition.

To me this says the Buffalo Bills will not select Lamar Jackson or Mason Rudolph at #12.  If they can't get up for one of the top 4 they are going to go BPA at #12 and it won't be a Quarterback.

Beane has a targeted qb grouping and within reason will make a measured deal for one of them. If a reasonable deal can't be worked out he will follow his board. Where I have a slight disagreement with your judgment is that I don't think that it is improbable that Beane might be interested in Rudolph at 12 or more likely 22.

And for the most part we don’t have many glaring holes,” Beane said. “We do have a couple, but I don’t feel like we’re entering the draft with five starting positions that I’ve got to find in this draft.”

That's a concerning comment. I'd argue their WR group, LB group, and offensive line could all get hit by an asteroid and you wouldn't lose much after you signed 12 new guys off the street.

This is how I have to feel you enter the draft. You pick a player where to two lines meet.

Meaning if we really need a LB and we have this one graded as a top half pick of round one and he is available later, take him.

I'm even a bit removed from BPA at positions of need...I would say it's BPA at the premium positions; that is to say that you always draft a franchise QB if you don't have one (or if you have any doubt about his contract status or health).  If you're convinced that you already have your franchise QB in the fold, and are comfortable with the depth behind him, then you go BPA at pass rusher, CB, WR, and OT (in that order).

That's how I'd approach days 1 and 2...on day 3, I'm probably going straight BPA (save for specialists)

I took it as he thinks they should get the best option at QB, so, they can come in right away and have success. So, no Josh Allen if that’s the case.

I always have to tell myself Beane says a lot without saying much and have to look for the little clues here and there. Maybe I’m over analyzing, but it’s happened before.

Yeah I was taking it at face value. It's a good mindset to have anyways. He should ignore the holes if that's what it takes to get the QB they have circled as their guy.

Agreed on premium positions verse value positions. I think QB can stand to be in a separate category. In no other major sport can one position dictate outcome as much as QB.

Pinnacle-QB

Premium positions- LT, DE/Pass Rusher, CB, Safety (on the fence for safety).

Value positions- RB, LB, Interior line on D and O.

There are exceptions to this. Barkley comes to mind this year. I think for the value positions you need to be seen as a can't miss.  Zero injury and character concerns along with performance at a major program for two years or more.  This criteria would allow a value position to move up the board if it also has need attached to it.

McBean wants him and I do believe we will make the trade with the Giants.  both #1's, one second and second next year

connect the data points and mcbeane has a plan

I would make that trade if that is the cost.  What happens if Browns take Allen?
