Coach search has come (again) who is the best fit?

I don't think the 2 are related....he could be a good talent evaluator, a good leader/boss but just isn't comfortable with public speaking

And that's the problem. I want people in the bills organization who are smart. Not some guy who can pick a decent linebacker but who sounds like an imbecile when he opens his mouth. This is a billion dollar business, and if you want to essentially be the face of the operation from january to may you better be able to string a coherent sentence or two together. I don't doubt that Whaley has a decent eye for talent. But objectively - after that disaster does he inspire anyone to think he is the guy to lead us out of this mess? I for one can't trust him to get "it" right.

As a longtime STH, what disgusts me most about the present situation isn't the length of the drought - of the current employees only brandon bears some responsibility for that - but that our team finds new ways to look utterly incompetent and hopeless after all these years. The word embarrassing is overused in many contexts, and particularly in sports. But this is really, really embarrassing.

To me, the coaching package is much more important to me than just the HC. The coordinators they pick is going to be the deal breaker. For example, if Shanny wants to return a favor and bring his college buddy in as our DC, then his name should be crossed off. Same goes for any candidate. So, don't get your panties in a bunch if your favorite coordinator isn't selected.

Sure. Don't confuse articulation with intelligence.

I'm sorry but he sounds like a dope. His track record also tilts toward dope. (Email problems, yearly fourth round wastes, horrible deal with dareus, deal with Tyrod that all of a sudden doesn't look so hot, the Rex mess.) And, if it walks like a duck ...

This has to be the worst post I've read all day. He doesn't sound like an imbecile and he can string together coherent sentences and the Bills are not utterly incompetent and hopeless and he doesn't even remotely sound like a dope. And, his track record doesn't even remotely tilt toward dope. Jeez hypebole much!

Aaron Schatz (head of Football Outsiders) today said he thinks the best available candidate is Vance Joseph. I asked him "Is 19th in DVOA exciting"? His response:

Given the personnel? Yes, it is. Dolphins LBs were some guy, journeyman guy, and guy whose knees only work sometimes. Miami's starting cornerbacks were a round 2 rookie and a guy who was a steaming crater in 2015. Top pass rushers were Mario, who will be cut again, and Wake, who apparently has magic powers.

Thought it was an interesting take.

Serious question - what did you think of his pc? Also, any thoughts on bill polian's takedown quotes in the d&c? And what does Whaley's track record point to? Maybe I'm guilty of holding people to standards that are too high, but I had a bad vibe about his judgment following the office porn story and his record as a talent evaluator is reflected in our recent record: mediocre.

And here's a hint as to what is going on - Whaley doesn't like Lynn, and the "field" doesn't like Whaley. What a mess.

Do you have sources or is this conjecture on your part?

What if Denver hires him? He's going to get a bunch of HC interviews. It's not even a little crazy.

McDaniels is my top choice but I'd love to see them try to get Dabo.

I'm with you on Dabo, I'm surprised his name hasn't been mentioned for other jobs as well.

I also like McDermott the most. Good coach with a lot of experience. I have read that his players really like and respect him as well. Play hard for him.

Me three. But as with all the hires, who he can bring in as coordinators is just as important imo

Unless a coaching legend comes out of retirement, I'm not going to be excited by any hire. There's no one out there who's a sure-fire winner.

On the other hand, I'm not going to cut up my Bills Fan Card and leave the country regardless of who they hire. There's virtually no one out there I can label a sure-fire failure.

Look at Bill Belichick. Some Pats fans were unhappy with that hire, given his performance in Cleveland.

Closer to home, look at Marv Levy. I remember many fans were unexcited with that hire. He failed as a HC at both Cal and William & Mary in the college ranks. He followed that up some good years in the CFL, which doesn't count for much. Then produced a 31-42 record at KC. There was nothing in his resume that suggested he would get the Bills to the Super Bowl four years in a row and later be inducted into the HOF.

Hiring coaches can be like drafting QBs - you're never sure what you're going to get.

Would love to know how all the same candidates seem to get interviewed by all the teams with openings. Do all NFL teams use the same search firm or something? There's 64 coordinators and a bunch of college coaches, yet every year there's 5 or 6 hot candidates who interview for all the openings. Lynn has been an NFL assistant for over 10 years and this is the 1st year he ever got a coordinator position which was due to an in-season firing. Now we're supposed to believe he's some kind of of hot commodity?

Lynn has been interviewing for HC positions since he was on the Jets staff with Ryan. He isn't a new hot name, he's been making the rounds for a while.

He's been an Assistant Head Coach and has interviewed for HC jobs before:

Just because TBD hasn't heard of every person that is being interviewed for a HC job, doesn't mean that they're not qualified. I'm guessing people that are actually in the industry, have more insight into who's ready for that level of job...

Then the next question is how a guy who couldn't land a coordinator position for 10 years was getting head coach interviews? Not interested in a Rooney Rule discussion. There's gotta be more than 1 minority coordinator out there. Are there that few guys willing to interview unless they are the favorite to get the job? Rob McDermott - a coordinator for a below average defense is now a hot candidate?

Peter King:

• Buffalo is going to be a tough sell. Around the league, the performance of GM Doug Whaley at his Monday press conference was not well-received, particularly the part about how he was informed by ownership that Rex Ryan was being whacked and he (Whaley) had no say in it. The reaction was, if I may translate, Who wants to work for that guy? That plus the fact that no one really knows a thing about the Howard Hughes-like Pegulas, and there’s no sure quarterback of the future, and it sometimes seems like the land of mercenaries. Just know that Buffalo’s not going to have an easy time find a coach it loves. If I were Whaley and Pegula, I’d target Tom Coughlin, and tell him he’d better have a very logical successor on his staff.
