There is no drop off except that this season isnt over. He had 77tgts last year, or roughly 4.8tgts/game. He has 57 so far, or roughly 5.2tgts/game. The main issue in Clay's performance is the QB who simply REFUSES to throw him the ball when he is wide open. Or waits way too long when he does actually throw the ball Clay's way. There was a Buffalo News article about this exact topic last week. It has been the premise for multiple All-22 articles. Clay is getting open. That much is obvious. He just isnt getting the ball. 34-78-83 Posted November 28, 2016 Share Posted November 28, 2016 (edited) Clay is clearly playing hurt and has the whole season. Due to whatever it may be , he has lost a bit in the quicks, speed, vertical leap and suddenness departments. This has not helped his cause. He is still blocking at a very high level. He does get open at times and is not seen, but also it appears he is far from the primary option on most passing plays and for a reason. He has played like he's hurt because he IS playing hurt. Still gets open far, far, FAR more often than not. And is an integral part of the success of our league leading running game. People busting on Clay's game don't have a grasp on some of the intricacies of his game and what he's asked to do on a weekly basis. With him basically being uncuttable due to our restructure of his deal, can this team afford a top 5 TE contract albatross around their neck for 300 yards and 0 TD's in 11 games? The unaccounted for amount accelerates if he's cut or traded. The structure was terrible from the team's standpoint. The Bills could get out, but it'd hurt. Big blunder here, huge contract, not used, a QB who can't/won't throw to him, terrible pass catcher and falls down when you look at him. Who is to blame for this huge mistake, Greg Roman?? Clay has a known knee issue. His blocking is superb, so blame the OC and the QB on not using him in the passing game. What a waste of an asset. RT needs to be upgraded. But I agree the oline has been good overall. Agreed the line has been playing well, even going back to last year. BUT Incognito isnt getting any younger, Wood is nearing the end, and RT could use a minor upgrade. I wouldnt hate if they brought in more interior talent to develop.
