I hope you are right!

What do we all think is a fair contract for Spikes?

4 years/$20M?

He's young enough and plays a position that would be nice to get a 4 yr deal... Hopefully at least 3 but hopefully under $5 mil a yr

I wonder what the long-term outlook of Biff Co would have been post-Almanac. Even staked to enormous wealth, I can't believe he was much of a businessman and he seemed to have a pretty high burn rate expense-wise, so I could see cash flow problems looming down the road a bit.

BiffCo was a multi tiered enterprise, specializing in toxic disposal. But the REAL cash came from the Paradise Casino.

Kinda tough for a casino owner to go broke.

I don't think he missed a regular season game last year. He was benched in the postseason after being late to a team meeting.

i think the story devolved into - he totally missed a team meeting while tweeting out pics of his car snowed in, but not calling anyone at the facility to let them know. pats tossed him on IR, and a few days/week later his agent made a comment that he couldve played.

Am I the only one not ecstatic about this? I think that he is a good run stuffing LB but its not like when Takeo came. This guy is limited and can help the run D. I would expect him to improve the run D in a similar manner to the way that Lawson improved the pass d.

mixed feelings - hes good at his role but that its so specialized brings some of the same issues you have. its continuing to point at a real basic schwartz 43 scheme. i also liked having players that were super flexible allowing disguise in the scheme..... that said schwartz has had some success, and this would be his most talented unit.

You've got a flexible d-line with ok depth. You'll have flexible OLB's and surprisingly decent depth. You have a safety that can play corner, a guy who covers the slot well and you just brought in a guy that just might challenge for a starting CB spot who is at worst depth.

I think the defense will be ok.

So the suggestion is that we'd be better without Spikes, than with him, and him potentially having character flaws?

I'm sick of character being the determining factor on if we keep a player. I'll take a couple bad apples as long as the team wins games. Tired of this BS.

right - and i dont mean we dont have a good unit, but although youve called me on it a few times this offseason i think it points to a certain style of defense.

the schwartz hire pointed to 43 basic nonblitzing get the pressure with the front 4 scheme, and then the LB coach hire fit that same, now the rivers signing and spikes possibility points towards that same style --- i dont love the style but know it can be successful with the right talent, and we certainly have talent

He's been hanging around with his mentor, Jerry "The Bag of the D" Sullivan too much.

omg why doesnt he just quit the Buffalo News??

I swear he has to put a negative spin on every Bills related story

Schwartz coaches his players to play dirty and nasty.

I like dirty and nasty IF it leads to more wins.

I'd love to see Wilfork and Dareus take turns stomping on Brady's head and ankles. Like Suh did in the past.

I'd love to see Spikes eye gouge Geno Smith while he is down, like Spikes did in the past.

With a win that would make my day! Kick them when they're down and step on their package while you're at it!

Why would you not want your defense to be feared?

Much better than the keystone cops defense we usually put out there.

What is the negative spin here? Simply curious to hear your point.

It appears that a guy in tune w/ the situation in NE is skeptical over his character. I think it's a valid concern. I think there's a lot of posters here that really want Spikes but if they had any reservation about him it would have to do with his character IMO. And that he's slow.

OMG just shut up Graham.... Look how well making strong efforts to keep all "goodie two shoes" players has done for the Bills over the past 10 + years. Smerlas is NOT the guy you want to take advice from any way. 10 years of his radio show and putting his foot in his mouth constantly have shown that.

I love all the comments like "I don't know if I want Spikes. He's excellent against the run but a liability in the passing game."

Our atrocious run defense is nearly as responsible as poor QB play in terms of losing games. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Spikes is better than who we have at MLB currently (Kiko is OLB now). Screw the character talk. Screw the "slow" talk. He's an improvement.

No problem.

Its obvious that most of the Bills fans are pumped ab out this move (if you search Brandon Spikes on Twitter you can see all the excited fan tweets) and my issue is that Tim Graham, as always focuses on the negative side of this news thus happering the level of excitement for Bills fans.
