  1. They could have just let him walk and *maybe* if they hold their water and don't sign anyone to negate that value, get a comp pick. Instead, they definitely got a higher pick in hand........which (based on the Edmunds equation) could be more than a full round higher than a comp pick in the same 2025 draft. In 2017 the Texans traded a second round pick to the Browns to eat Brock Osweiler's $16M in cash and $10M in cap space. Those figures equate to $24.5M and $15.3M in todays cap dollars. So don't discount the value of finding a 3rd rounder on the street.
  2. My bad, you were mocking the idea that it was worth franchise tagging a player to get just a 3rd and 7th round pick? So the Bills were wise not to do so with Gilmore? Was that your attempt at a point? Gilmore was worth more then than Sneed was now because of the way defense is played now. Like I said he was the TOP free agent in that class. Sneed would not have been. There was even a franchise QB in this years free agent class. Times have changed. Those picks are valuable.........Beane literally crafted much of his free agent activity last offseason to try to get a later 3rd round pick in 2024 and it was a gut punch when they didn't get it. Back in that 2017-2019 range there were a lot of defensive players being tagged and traded for picks ranging from 1st's to 3rd's. Clowney, Frank Clark, Dee Ford to name a few. And in 2020 even a safety in Jamal Adams was traded for 2 first round picks after he got upset about having his 5th year option picked up by the Jets instead of getting a new contract. In short, the circumstances around Sneed's free agency are not the same. As for the contracts..........remember that at the time the top of the CB market was $13M the top of the WR market was about $16M(Sammy Watkins 2018). Now, the top of the CB market is going to be about HALF of the top of the WR market when Jefferson gets his $35M+ aav. CB is no longer paid like a premium position. They are being paid more like G's and Tackles. Sneed's $19M aav is just a million more than Tremaine Edmunds got as an off-ball LB. I was wrong about Woods being an All Pro but he was 13th among NFL players in in receiving yards in both 2018 and 2019. Making him a stud producer at a time when the Bills didn't have a receiver inside the top 30 in the league in receiving yards. So the Bills got NOTHING AT ALL in compensation for losing a top producing WR and an NFL defensive MVP. Mistakes were made.
  3. The bills got like 80 starts out of Tre White and Edmunds like a piece Sure it's not a quarterback.. but the NFL is all circumstances You cannot convince me that Patrick mahomes would be a three-time super bowl champion if the bills drafted him... especially with dennison as OC.. So much around the world of the NFL would change including the bills probably never trading for diggs... And that's not even mentioning the massive impact reid has had on his development The bills also ended up with a franchise quarterback even if it was by dumb luck and got a cornerback who made an all pro team and a linebacker who made multiple pro bowls and got a massive contract The fact we got two pro bowl quality players is a return... And then striking gold with Allen next year We certainly did not get fleeced like the browns pics they got for Julio trade They got lots of picks and did nothing... The bills absolutely did stuff with our picks
  4. WR and edge - doesn't matter which comes first No team drafts BPA and certainly Beane does not. Allen, Edmunds, Oliver, Epenesa, Rousseau, Elam, and even Kinciad were all positions of absolute need at the time they were drafted.
  5. Of course, but trading back in the first round isn't Beanes style. He's traded up four times in the first round in six years. Allen, Edmunds, Elam, Kincaid. The fools in Las Vegas have them fourth. I'd say they're a contender.
  6. Regarding this list.... IMO........offensive talent(especially when placed around an elite QB) tends to provide longer lasting results. That's one of the reasons why you should invest MORE early picks offensively than on defense. The Bills are only now just "approaching" 50%.......that's still not enough. Go back and look at that list of Green Bay first round picks when they were spending a decade ignoring a 1st round WR for Rodgers. Some pretty good players but not a lot of legs. And I said it then, the Tre White and Tremaine Edmunds for Pat Mahomes pick trade was going to age poorly QUICKLY. Most defenders roll up mileage fast and then when they hit FA they are more likely to be let to leave. I'm sure someone will say......."well look at the Chiefs they invest a lot of early picks on defense"..........but they were balls-out investing in offense until after they'd won a SB. They had two 1,000 yard receiving targets in Hill and Kelce and STILL paid Sammy Watkins huge money in FA. And Watkins was a stud for them in the playoffs, including sealing their first SB win burning Richard Sherman late. When you've got a Lombardi in hand you basically arrive to the stadium with a lead in almost every playoff game against any team that doesn't. We watched it with NE for almost 2 decades. We had a lesser version of it with Buffalo back in the 1990's. Once you break thru that ceiling you need a little less talent to do it again each time.
  7. Just like the Bills got a third for Edmunds.
  8. I don't see that happening, unfortunately. It would have happened by now. They "corrected" Cincinnati fairly quickly and there's been nothing since. And you best believe Beane was on the phone immediately just like Cincinnati was. It seems that Edmunds being hurt for a couple games hurt us. Wild that even on another team, Edmunds still found a way to disappoint us.
  9. Still waiting for the NFL compensation board to correct the pick for Edmunds
  10. The curious case of Tremaine Edmunds.
  11. Edmunds is getting younger. They’re similar as both can be versatile. Former CBs, McDermott likes former CBs at safety. Blackmon has more of that dog in him IMO. Leader type. That’s what I wanted here.
  12. So now we are listening to PFF again? The formula for when to follow their grading is probably as complex as the NFL explaining how Edmunds wasn't a 3rd round comp pick.
  13. Yea he seems to understand how everything else worked out but still be confused on how the 9ers (Jimmy G) and the Bills (Edmunds) didn't get 3rd rounders.
  14. Good stuff here: https://www.cover1.net/safety-julian-blackmon-visiting-bills/ Also interesting note, Blackmon was drafted for Matt Eberflus’ defense in Indy. His concepts are very similar to ours, that’s why Chicago went after Tremaine Edmunds. When you watxh the video on Cover 1, Blackmon looks like a cross between Hyde and Poyer. I think he’s a great fit and my optimistic gut says it happens.
  15. he's only 4 years older than Trumaine Edmunds.
  16. Younger than Tremaine Edmunds! (by three months)
  17. I wouldn't mind if Beane got a package together to move up into the 3rd round seeing as they don't have 1 this year and have them get say 9 players maybe, I was really hoping & Beane probably was too to get a 3rd for Edmunds which i feel they got screwed out of but got to make chicken soup out of chicken S**T this year i guess . I have all the confidence that Beane will get er done !!
  18. They had a ton of cap space, Edmunds actually played pretty well the last half of the season AND this gives the bears the opportunity to reset the quarterback position with a rookie contract for the top prospect. Only question is can they FINALLY develop a QB. Jay cutler being one of the franchises top signal callers speaks volumes
  19. So you think it was stupid for the Bills to pick up the 5th year on Josh correct? Just want to understand your position clearly. That was stupid correct? I do get you give the player leverage by picking up the option but for the right player it can absolutely make sense but you also pick up some leverage. The players hate it which is probably means it's good for the teams. I will also just point out that with Edmunds it is simply your opinion he was not worth the $12M, one year later he got $18M and he did not change in any significant way. It is also just your opinion he outperformed the $12M so much in year 5 that his market was now 35% higher. I agree his 5th year was his best year but he did not blow years 1-4 out of the water so much that he went from 35% below a $12M AAV to 35% above that. The Bills probably tried extending him and could not agree on the price so they lived with the 5th year option, it was not some terrible value. See Knox and Miller if you want to see bad values. Edmunds has always been a polarizing player for Bills fans and has never had as many impact plays as people expect of him, not in years1-4, 5 or last year with Chicago.
  20. No it failed miserably with Edmunds, his market value was less than they paid for the 5th year option and worse, he outperformed it and then cost 35% more, so much so they had to let him walk. Either you extend or you franchise, you don’t lock yourself into a high risk low reward situation of the 5th year, it’s stupid.
  21. Criticism that's based on reality is valid, but much of the criticism of Beane/McDermott recently hasn't been based on facts but rather on posters' untrue perceptions or ignorance. Check out the thread on the Mack Hollins signing for criticism that descended into crucification of Beane based on a single poster's ignorance, but there have been plenty of others. I wasn't aiming at you when I originally posted in this thread, but your criticism of Beane in the bolded sentence above is both unfair and disingenuous -- and certainly unworthy of criticism. While it is technically true that Beane hasn't drafted a WR in rounds 1 or 2, he did use a first round draft pick to acquire Stephon Diggs. ^^^ Oh, you guys mean like ... Collecting draft capital and doing due diligence so that the Bills could not only move up in the 2018 draft to take a QB but to take the right QB? Hiring Brian Daboll and then adding Ken Dorsey to develop Josh Allen into a generational QB talent? Trading for Stephon Diggs? Drafting Terrel Bernard in 2022 to replace Tremaine Edmunds? Trading for Rasul Douglas at the trade deadline because he knew that he wasn't going to keep White in 2024?
  22. Beane has shown in the past (Allen, Edmunds) that he will trade up to get a player. I don't think he has enough to trade up into the teens but if one of these WR's fall that he wants I could see a possible trade up to the early #20's to try and get him.
  23. Isn't it ironic that you felt compelled to start this thread to push your hate for Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott while the Bills were finalizing the deal for Curtis Samuel? I guess the Bills aren't going to bed early on this FA period. IIRC, Beane & Company keep busy throughout the preseason and during the season (hello, Rasul Douglas!) Winner, winner! Chicken dinner! I don't get the hatred for Beane, either. At worse, he's the second best GM the Bills have ever had, and since he's still actively managing the Bills, he may surpass Bill Polian by winning a Super Bowl. His drafting has been excellent despite the whining of his detractors. He wheeled and dealed to move up in the draft to grab Josh Allen, a generational talent at QB. He pulled off the trade to give Allen his WR1, Stephon Diggs. None of his first round picks have been busts, although a couple haven't been quite good enough. Even among his 2nd round picks, I think only two, Cody Ford and Boogie Basham, have been outright busts. Compare that to the drafting records of other GMs around the NFL in recent years. What I like best is that Beane, though, is his forward thinking; he's not making making moves willy-nilly but prepares for future moves, and keeps his options open. He always has a plan or he comes up with a good one on the fly if necessary. He had Terrel Bernard ready to replace Tremaine Edmunds in 2023. He traded for Rasul Douglas to replace the injured Tre White whom he knew in October, 2023 he wasn't going to keep for 2024. Beane's detractors keep pushing the image that Beane doesn't know what he's doing but reality says that the Bills GM has his proverbial ducks all in a proverbial row.
  24. The ridiculous criticism of Brandon Beane here is what is concerning. It just shows that some people JUST DON'T HAVE the ability to critically think about anything. The last 3-4 days, all I hear is whining and crying that we don't have the money to be hugely active in Free Agency. We need to make a big splash to get over the hump and can't. They say this is proof that Beane has "mismanaged" the salary cap, and totally SUCKS as a GM. But what bad contracts are draining away the Bills cap space? The most obvious one is of course Von Miller... which ironically is the ONLY big FA splash Beane has made in the past 3-4 years!!!! His goal was to get over the hump against the Kansas City Chiefs. So is Beane really stupid for wasting money on an overpaid Free Agent, or is he really stupid for sitting on his hands and waiting for bargains????? Which one is it? Make up your minds!!! Other people are upset we had to release veterans like Tre White, Jordan Poyer, Mitch Morse, etc. to get under the cap. But the same people are somehow upset we CAN'T get rid of Stefon Diggs this year because of his dead cap. So do we want Beane to cut aging veterans or not??? Which one is it? Make up your minds!!! Drafting well and having good players puts every team in salary cap trouble eventually. Not counting Sean McDermott's first draft (which netted us Tre White, Dion Dawkins and Matt Milano), we have now seen three of Beane's drafts reach the expiration of their rookie contracts. Out of the 23 players he picked, 13 are starting for either the Bills or another team. That's pretty good. Here is the list: - Josh Allen, Taron Johnson, Ed Oliver, Dawson Knox, AJ Epenesa and Tyler Bass are starters for us. - Tremaine Edmunds, Harrison Phillips, Wyatt Teller, Devin Singletary, Zack Moss, Gabe Davis and Dane Jackson are starting for other NFL teams.
