In the case of Dareus, he was about to become a FA, so much easier for him to dictate the terms. That's the risk you take in not signing earlier when team has more leverage, but the opposite of that is you worry about player regressing after signing (see Trent Edwards and Fitz) So very easy to blame Whaley and point out how other teams were smarter, but depends on how much you value the player and who has the leverage. If the Bills had refused the clause he may have walked. To Wiz's comments "the Bills put in a clause" Highly doubt that was the case, more Dareus demanded the clause and the Bill's a greed or risked losing him. If they'd have known he'd be suspended twice, they likely wouldn't have agreed, but hindsight is easy, particularly around here.

La Canfora on FAN 590: Bills Situation "Toxic"
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Doutz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Would think not as the first comment, someone putting self interests could be about Brandon. It could be the cab driver?? Isn't Berman retiring year end, so now the cab driver is giving the info to LaCanfora?? -
No, don't want another HC from the defensive side. the way offenses are going want either a guy who came up on the offensive side, or think I'd be fine with someone with a ST background, and let him hire to top coordinators, less meddling that way. When Chan Gailey was HC here, he was very involved with the offense, put a ST guy in there, that probably doesn't happen as much.

Wouldn't a new coach have a head start?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to #34fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Funny you should ask, I know of one time that happened was this guy named Marv Levy, took over around half way in, think I recall he lasted a couple years or so. Back then in season firings were more common than today. But you're also very limited in who you can bring in as no one on existing staffs would be available, even colleges. So probably mid season firing/hiring aren't worth it -

NFL Coaching Hot Seats - Black Monday

But yet a year ago, can recall reading threads here how Jax made such a smart move in hiring Bradley. And there were multiple threads throughout the year praising Bowles. -
So answer me this, who should be involved? I guess you're OK with Terry and DW. Who else? While I'll agree that RB doesn't have anywhere near the football knowledge compared to Whaley, he still has more knowledge that Terry or Kim, or almost everyone on this board. Think you'd want more than two people talking to him, in fact if I were Terry, I'd tell DW, once you know who you want to hire, I want to talk with him , but it's 100% your choice on who to hire. So then who else should be involved? Overdolf?

Jeff Fisher fired, should have been Rob Ryan!
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to CommonCents's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe they hurried up and fired Fisher as they heard Rex was going to be coming available, so wanted to be first in line! -
Jim Harbaugh - HC & GM

He's wound way too tight for the NFL. I'd go for a five year deal as that's about all he'd last. -
Don't know if it's really a cancer as much as impatience, constantly changing direction, coupled with years of RW being cheap when it came to coaches and front office, led to years of decline. Coupled with terrible luck in finding a QB which they certainly aren't alone in, half the teams in the league suffered the same fate. Assuming the rumors are true that Whaley wanted to hire Hue Jackson, but Pegula over ruled him, would be reason to keep Whaley around and let him hire the next coach.

Why, intolerable to who, you? Easy solution, write the Bills a sternly worded letter denouncing your fandom from the team. Then it's up to them to decide who goes you or Russ. Maybe you can get the rest of the Russ haterson this website to sign the letter so will show it's not just you acting alone.
-
I'd venture to guess that after years of being involved with the team and game Russ know much more about football than the Pegula's know, (and you for that matter too) So should the owners not go to these meeting either since they no even less? Do you somehow know that the Pegula's didn't want Russ at these meetings, but he just shows up anyway? Or if the Pegula's did invite him, should Russ decline and tell them, "No I'm only involved with marketing" Do you think Jerry Jones and his kids don't attend every meeting, probably much more involved. So just to ask a really dumb question, do you think the Pegula's have the right to attend these meetings? And if the answer to that question is yes, then Russ as president has the need as part of his job to be there. Again, I'm quite confident as was pointed out, they aren't breaking down tape or discussing X's and O's level of detail. Agreed there are many around here that keep bringing up stupid stuff. Here's a suggestion, do some research and find a team where the owner, president, etc, have absolutely zero involvement with the team. And go root for them.

I believe they can franchise him up to three years. Will he threaten to hold out and scare them off from tagging him, maybe, but I'll be surprised if they don't work out a long term deal Offer them money and they will come

Cut Carp, see what Gay can do
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Freddie's Dead's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Well there should be many kickers available if every other team also cut all their kickers who've missed extra points. -
I see the same issue even with bringing Rex back for next season if the team goes without Taylor. Say Rex is coach next year but no TT, C Jones is QB, can easily see team only with 4 or 5 games in 2017. Do you then can Rex the end of 2017, likely, but then why not do it now the end of this season. If you're planning to move on from TT may as well move on from Rex too. This is pretty funny that the ground crew didn't figure out using a blower wasn't going to create this result. One of the funniest things I've seen since "for the love of God, I thought turkeys could fly!"

But I did like the Takeo Spikes signing, brought in Bledsoe while that move didn't work out well it did put Buffalo on the map of being relevant again. As to QB what other choice did he have besides Johnson, the midget? the same midget who told the Bills he wasn't going to live in Buffalo for the off-season to workout with the team.

I thought Donahoe was a pretty dam good GM as far as talent goes and making trades etc. His failure was his ego and paranoia and distrust of others. Once the press wrote some bad articles about him, he was a changed man and couldn't handle it. As far as Levy goes, he was terrible and realistically both him and RB were more GM's in name only and did very little actually around making choices on players.

I'm in complete agreement with the article in that while Nix was the GM at the time that selected EJ, DW also bought off on it. Where I do have a problem putting too much blame on DW is that I recall the season prior Buddy Nix stating more than once, that "we will get a QB in the off-season" and I believe he specifically stated through the draft. Nix wanted his legacy to Buffalo to be he was the guy who got the Bill's their next franchise QB. If it worked out he'd be revered forever, whereas even if he selected the best LB or tackle of all time, no one would really ever care. I'm sure he also knew he was retiring already so he didn't have much to lose. So Nix was hell bent on drafting someone and likely early. So did DW really tell Nix the guy we want is EJ in round #1 or was it the other way around and Nix told Whaley I'm drafting a QB in the 1st round, who do you want and given that choice DW bought off on EJ as the best option. Likely the truth is somewhere in between, but do believe based on Nix's off-season statement, he was drafting a QB in round #1 whether there was anyone deserving or not and DW just gave him the name he felt was the best option, but maybe would have rather waited until round #2.
