So they drafted Peterman this year, how's he working out?? Jet's drafted one 3 out of 4 years, did it work for them? That's the problem with this ridiculous idea that keeps coming up of drafting one every year. You never have any time to develop anyone to know if they are any good. I've read the backup QB (#2 guy) gets like 6 snaps each week with the first team#3, probably none. Even in the off season, with the limited rules backups get limited snaps. The problem too with QB's is very few are worth the money they are paid. IMO the only ones truly worth what they are being paid are; Brady Rodgers, Brees, and Big Ben. There are another few that are close to being worth the money; Ryan, Stafford, Palmer, Rivers and maybe Luck and Wilson. That's 10 out of 32 There are probably 5 or 6 that look like they could become the next real deal, but likely by the time they do become great, I'd estimate 5 of the 10 on my great list may be retired. Then there are another 10 to 15 tears that have guys that are paid like elite QB's but don't play like one, but eat up so much of the salary cap you can't afford to put a great team around him, but they aren't good enough themselves to carry the team very far. Flacco, Dalton, Tannerhill, Manning, Newton, You have a few guys who win while on their rookie (cheap) contract, but once they start making the big bucks, they need to cut a few other very good players and the team does OK, may win a wild card game, but not good enough to go far (see Wilson and Cam) So my point is you don't just need a franchise QB, you need one of those half dozen in the first list. Your only other option is to win real fast as once the middle of the road guy hits that 2nd contract, you can't sign enough good players around him. I would like to see Peterman possibly next year or the year after, let him learn for a year or two first, maybe he is the answer. Or maybe not. But likely there is as much chance of him being the next Tom Brady as there is of him being the next Ryan Leaf. So all this talk of needing improved QB play, while I don't disagree, it's much much harder than people make it out to be.

Positives/Negatives from Today's game
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Overseas Bills Fan's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Maybe I missed it but did McD come out and state that was the play he told TT to run, to throw it to the guy in the flat 3 yards up field? Even the play prior was that the planned 1st option -
Just had a brief convo with Donald Jones.
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to Cherrybone's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Sure, absolutely true. But what makes you think we don't end up worse? There are more failures at QB than success. TT isn't going to an Arron Rodgers type or even a Dalton, but you could end up worse. Would be interesting to see what TT could do with an improved O-line, and legit group of WR. And please don't say that had one and traded him as he's not doing that much more in LA than he did here, and now he has what appears to be a good QB. Plus no guarantees he wouldn't be hurt again like he often was. -
What has Brandon Beane done to improve this team?

Would be interesting to see what TT could do wit ha legit WR group and a good line. -
Heard them talking yesterday on ESPN about NE's troubles on defense and maybe they need to think about trading Jimmy Garoppolo would you trade him for Darius straight up? Assuming he agreed to an extension prior to making the deal. NE is maybe the one place that wouldn't be scared off by his salary and also the one place that may be able to straighten him out. I'm sure Gilmore could help him adapt!

OK...so saw the replay of the game

One of the announcers also stated something about the rules changing slightly that the burden of proof to over rule what was called on the field has gotten higher. -
Just some random thoughts on the game
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to BmarvB's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
Can't imagine any team willing to trade for him even for 10 cents on the dollar when you factor in his big fat contract. Unless we do a Trevor Simeion like trade to Cleveland. -
McD's worst decision this year...
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to re enlightener's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The fact that it appears so straight forward makes you wonder what went on behind the scenes that no one knows of. Considering how many people here on this board totally wrote the Bills off, ripping practically every decision they made, shows that most here on this site know very little compared to what they think they know. Think I trust the Bills judgment more than those here who actually think they know anything. -
I'm Surprised by Zay Jones' Slow Start
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to 26CornerBlitz's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
From what I recall Moulds did OK, but nothing special the first couple of years. Then Flutie showed up and one thing I will give him credit for is he straightened out Moulds, more off the field type things, made him into a professional. -
Try and stay calm? Are you kidding me?

Very true, points do matter to to who wins the game. But yards does give a better indicator of how well the defense is really playing. Offense can be terrible, constantly punting from their own 20 punting to just beyond the 50, or turning the ball over defense only gives up maybe 30 yards but enough to put them filed goal range or TD range. So a team could give up many points but more due to their own offense ineptness where as yards does measure how much of shutdown unit the defense actually is. -
Ultra conservative play calling at the end

They were running the ball wee in the 2nd half, it forces Atlanta to use all their timeouts so can't fault too much, -
A funny thing happened on the way to the tank

I'm sure if you had done a search function, you could have found 10 prior posts stating the same thing! -
Tend to agree, great coordinators often fail as a HC but usually whichever side of the ball they came from, is still good. In Rex case, he made a complete mess of things. I honestly believe he was more fired for his off-field issues(Too many penalties, lack of discipline, constant boasting, 12 men on the field, etc) than on field

Does it feel different NOW? (#3)
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to MarlinTheMagician's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
The things this season so far have proved: We're not as void of talent as many of the experts both nationally and on this board thought. Coaching may really make a bigger difference than talent does. We still have six picks next year in the first 3 rounds which can be used to improve many positions. The only downside to this is IF we want a potential top 5 pick QB, maybe need to give up all the picks to get up there as opposed to with a 4-12 record, may have only needed to give up half the picks -
I had to shut off the WGR post game
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to PromoTheRobot's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
All these shows are the same. Lebatard and Stugotz is the same way, if you get Stugotz away from him, he's not bad. Same with Bulldog I don't live in western NY, is WGR still the flagship station?? -
What if we still had Hogan & Gillislee?
Ed_Formerly_of_Roch replied to BBills14's topic in The Stadium Wall Archives
I understand, no team signs him the Bills own him. But did he really want to be here ,and if not do you want to have a backup RB on the team that doesn't really want to be here. And yes in fantasy land it doesn't matter, the Bills own him end of story. But when talking about professional football players, or any sport for that matter, or even in life in general, you don't want people forced into a job they really don't want. -
Yes you're correct, we would have had a full year. But what if he did get hurt again or hurt enough that he's not worth signing. It's not just the amount of games he was out, but also the number of games he played nicked up and was pretty much in-effective. Just like now concussion protocol. So if at a the end of the year, you decided he wasn't worth signing, you'd get nothing in return as then way to late to trade for anything other than a bag of peanuts. Trading now you got a 2nd round pick and a CB who's looking pretty good so far. I'm not saying they should have made the trade or not, but your position of "we would have a full year" doesn't take into account you could very likely be walking away with nothing to show for it.

Something I don't think I've seen anyone mention with regards to Mike G. Did anyone consider that maybe he told the Bills that he didn't want to re-sign with them, that he wanted to go to a team where he could potentially start or a team with a "shared backfield" Yes I understand the Bills hold all the cards they tender him, he has no choice, yada, yada, yada..... But this isn't Madden or fantasy football, this is professional football players here and few if any teams want a player on their team that doesn't want to be there unless he's so good he justifies the franchise tag. But this is a backup RB here we're talking about. It was reported that the Bills had negotiations with him, but couldn't agree on a deal, so lets assume Mike told the Bills he wanted to go elsewhere, the Bills could have just let him walk and get nothing. They could as many here have ripped the Bills for not doing, gave him the higher tender which would have meant any team signing him would have been giving up a higher pick to us. The Bills front office has been doing this a bit longer than people on this message board, and likely would know that other teams wouldn't sign him with the higher tender hanging over him, so they would either have to sign him to the higher tender (was it $750k) for a back up RB or let him walk. So instead the Bills did the smart thing signed him for the lower tender thinking there was a decent chance some other team would bite on him and they would at least get something in return. I realize this doesn't fit the narrative of many here on this board that are so much smarter than professionals who do this for a living and I'm making alot of assumptions, just like many here do everyday, except somehow their opinion is factual at least in their own mind it is. -

So here's some examples of how well tanking worked out. (just listing QB's) David Carr Alex Smith Tim Couch Jamarcus Russell Akili Smith #3 overall Rick Mirer #2 overall Heath Shuler #3 overall Ryan Leaf #2 overall Yes but in the NFL particularity today with the CBA rules limiting practice, with two QB's every year, there wouldn't be enough time to even look at the tickets to determine if you have a winner. I've read where the #2 QB every week gets about 6 reps per week with the #1 offense. So based on that limited time to show your stuff how is drafting two QB's a year every going to tell you anything?
