  1. I think this is Beane's toughest offseason, but this may not be his toughest decision if another team pays at or near $20 million. I just don't think you pay a MLB that kind of money unless he's on par with Luke Kuechly, a future HOF'er. That's especially true this offseason when we have one of the very worst OL's in the NFL that is holding us back. Get an average MLB who's decent in zone coverage for half that amount. There are much higher priorities.
  2. Well he has a little starting experience. I mean no disrespect to Ike, but I'm hoping the Bills bring in a couple headliners on the OL and another 1 or 2 solid veterans that will send a player of Ike's caliber to this point to the PS, if eligible or to another team. Alternatively, I hope he comes back with a vengeance and plays his best football to date. That might be hard after a serious injury, but I'm just hoping for the best result.
  3. It makes little sense to talk about the tax rate as if we were all taxed the same. Pro football players probably pay a much higher rate than the owners when everything is taken into account. The players aren't moneybombing the politicians in order to get a few convenient tax loopholes. Any politician that tries to raise taxes on the wealthiest families will be buried in attack ads. That's why you pay a higher rate than Amazon.com which gets enormous tax refunds each year. The players are mostly in that income strata where the rates are highest and they can't call it capital gains or set up fake corporations or tax shelters overseas. One trick used to avoid taxes is to set up a fake corporate office in a place like the Canary Islands and deposit a huge portion of your earnings or dividends in the overseas branch of your bank in the same place -- the Canary Islands in this case. Then you call the US branch of your bank to take a big loan (which isn't taxed). The bank simply takes the amount of the loan from your Canary Islands account and that money stays there. The loan is repaid almost immediately overseas where the US government can't touch it. No taxes or very little. No interest because it was repaid almost immediately. Neat trick, huh? Maybe the NFL should offer that 'service' to the players or adjust salary caps to account for differing state tax rates.
  4. Great player and great teamate. I just wish his wife would shut up about the money.
  5. They like Gabe because he has a strong work ethic. I suspect he'll be a Bill for years to come, but not as WR2. You don't disrespect your players publicly if they're doing their best -- even if they're not good enough to start. 4 hours ago, TheBrownBear said: It's GM speak. You show your hand and you end up trading up for Kair Elam instead of Trent McDuffie. Buddy Nix used to say you should never believe any GM's before the draft. I wouldn't want Buddy back as GM, but he could do the press conferences. He had the gift of gab.
  6. I agree with everything but Poyer and the time limit. Poyer had an excellent season despite playing with numerous injuries. Also, why will we only have a good defense for 1 more year? With McDermott at the helm, I think our defense will always be respectable.
  7. I don't know what he'd cost, but he's exactly what we need. I wonder if we'll need to sign at least 1 serious upgrade on the OL before any FA RB would want to come here though. Our OL might scare them away.
  8. It wasn't any 1 play, but I'll go with "the hit heard 'round the world". I wonder how many are old enough to remember it. 20 hours ago, Sargent Hulka said: Booth Lusteg (University of Connecticut) missing a 23 yard field goal with six seconds left to beat the San Diego Chargers at War Memorial on October 16, 1966, after Buffalo rallied from a 17-0 deficit to tie. Even with that heartbreaker, Buffalo made it to the AFL Championship that season. After that miss, some Bills fans spotted Booth Lustig walking on Chippewa Ave. They got out of the car and beat him up.

I'm optimistic he has a good Year 2. -He has a brand new OL coach trying to implement a new scheme with middle of the road talent, which led to a bottom third OL ranking. -He had no real slot WR after Crowder went down early in the season. -His WR2 turned out to be a high end WR3/big play threat. -Josh Allen busted up his elbow halfway through the season and clearly wasn't right, albeit improving, throughout the rest of the season. I wish our OL had mid level talent. That would be a big upgrade. I agree on your other points though.
  10. Despite a couple big flops, he has done an outstanding job in Buffalo and Minnesota. I seriously doubt he'll be back, but some other team will be lucky to have him in 2024. Isn't it just like a few small minded fans to overlook the devastating impact of all the injuries he had to deal with this past season. I don't know that anyone else could have done it any better. That said, I'm hopeful for the future. If our defense can stay where it's at with a healthy DL and the OL gets a huge upgrade, 2024 will be our best year ever.
  11. 4 hours ago, ßookie_tech said: I can't say that I'd feel very good about going into next season with him being our starter, having never played the position before. Agreed. Sign a veteran at an average salary to compete. Same for MLB. These are not positions I want to be spending something like $15 mill/yr on. We need that money for a guy like Orlando Brown and Saffold's replacement/upgrade as well. I'd say draft those guys, but you know what you're getting from a FA usually. Use the draft for wideouts, Oliver's replacement, interior OL after day 1, RB, etc. We need to go to 'win now' mode. I want to see 2 big OL signings or I'll be writing 2023 off as another 'not good enough' season. Time to get serious about an OL that can carry the load.
  12. Apart from money considerations, he's still got gas in the tank. I just don't want to put too much money on the LB position when our OL is such a disaster.
  13. I could see this happening. We'll have to see what happens. Also, how long would it take him to make the transition? I do like his potential though. I'd hate to see us use a day 1 or 2 pick on defense unless Oliver gets traded. 1 hour ago, John from Riverside said: Alan Williams made this transition from corner to safety and did pretty well at it. We’ve seen this before. George Wilson even converted from WR and it didn't take him very long either.
  14. He's approaching 30 so it could work very well. We need to run more anyway and Henry is due for a slightly smaller workload like we did with Thurman Thomas. We could still upgrade the OL without spending a fortune since our OL isn't worth very much as is. Oliver and Morse are overpaid. Let the Titans have them. Of course, this still sounds unrealistic, but it's nice to think about. I mean, what do you do with your safeties? I could see Josh just calling audibles based on that. Move the safeties back and audible to a run. I have no problem running a more balanced offense. It keeps the defense rested. With an average OL, we'd score 40 points per game.
  15. The numbers don't lie. He's a physical freak, but his pass protection stinks and his run blocking isn't much better. Right now, he's a major liability. I suspect he could be following in Cody Ford's footsteps. I don't understand why some people are making excuses for him. I hope he turns it around, but he needs to make several BIG steps in a very short time. Upgrade RT in a major way and if Brown gets it together, fine. We don't have a single average G on the roster, so maybe he can play there. Otherwise, he's trade bait or a career backup. I think this OL is due for a major shakeup.
  16. Fix the OL. Then get an impact player or 2 on offense. Edmunds is good, but he seldom makes game changing plays. I like Beane and our coaches, but Simms and Florio are right about the clock ticking at OBD. Upgrade the OL. Let Edmunds walk. I think Poyer makes more game changing plays despite their ages. Trade Oliver if they can find an upgrade.A great DL makes up for an average secondary. Get a big playmaker on O. Give Allen a solid run game to take the pressure off him. I'm not opposed to going RB in the 1st if that kid from Texas is still there. I hear he's one of the 3 best players in this draft. I don't care if he is a RB or we took Cook last year. If he's making game changing plays, I'll be happy. I'll say this for McDermott though. I'm not sure any HC would have done better after the elbow injury to Josh, Miller's injury, White's short season and so many other injuries to deal with. I'm going to guess that the injuries won't be as bad 2 years in a row.
  17. Just sign an average veteran MLB and S in FA, if possible. I'm guessing these aren't the most expensive positions to fill. Good or great OL aren't often available in FA because they are in short supply.
  18. I would certainly agree that kicker, especially the guy kicking FG's, are the most important ST players since FG's often determine the outcome of a game. Other than that, just sign guys that will add solid depth and let them play ST unless they can really make an impact like Steve Tasker did.
  19. I'd love to see Orlando Brown at LT and Dawkins at LG or O Brown at RT with S Brown as the Swing Tackle. Maybe, if he can finally put it together, S Brown could be good at G. He's an athletic freak. I just don't know why he's struggling so much. Sometimes OL take time to develop. I sincerely hope Spencer Brown takes a HUGE leap in year 3. If there isn't good value for OL or outside receiver in the late 1st, maybe we trade down to acquire multiple 2nd round picks for this coming draft. I know Beane's 2nd round picks haven't fared well, but I suspect that's mostly coincidence since you could argue that he's gotten good value in rounds 3-7. He's also done well in round 1 except for Oliver who is still OK, but not good value for #9 overall.
  20. It's funny how everyone blames coaching for the devastating injuries the Bills endured. Also, if you don't think the Sabres have a very bright future, you aren't paying attention. Even their developmental talent is looking really good including all 3 of their 1st round picks from the most recent draft. Oh! You probably didn't know they had 3 picks in the 1st round, did you? They've hit on a very good GM and coaching with a ton of talent in the pipeline. They already lead the NHL in scoring. So they won't be really good in the near future? Because something didn't happen in the past, doesn't mean it can't happen in the future. The right building blocks are already in place. I'm really excited for the Sabres.
