Play-by-play Audio In Stadium

When I go to games in Highmark Stadium I miss the live play-by-play audio you get on TV. I know the Bills broadcast on the radio on WGR55 but last time I tried that there was a delay. Does anyone know of a way to get ‘live’ (non delayed) play-by-play audio in stadium?

Good question that I don't think there is an easy answer for. (Delay as you pointed out.)

The fm station used to not have a delay. I don't know if still

Back in the 90s my dad took me to a game and he brought in a small hand held black and white tv. Pretty sure that’s not allowed today though 🤣

Are you using your smart phone wifi and WGR app for the audio play-by-play?  Is that the reason for the delay? I'm betting if you went old-school War Memorial Stadium with a transistor radio and earphones there wouldn't be much, if any, latency.

There were so many radios in the stadium in the old days it was too funny.

 

I agree that the radio would have the least delay.

Last year you couldn’t stream the game live on WGR do to some sort of broadcasting rights in the Buffalo area . Only way to listen was on regular radio. I was told small transistor radios are no longer allowed because of the batteries could be thrown. Pretty much SOL.

When I was in my 20s, I took a buddy of mine to his first Bills game. He was not a big football fan, but watched some games on TV. He complained about not being able to follow the game because no play-by-play. I always took a walkman with me so I gave it to him to listen to Van Miller. He had it on the whole game and several games after that.  Every game he announced "The lights are on at Rich Stadium." A staple of Van Miller's broadcast!

 

(I hope I don't have to explain what a walkman is to a few here)

You just pause the game in the stadium for a few seconds and let the radio catch up. Duh. I thought everyone knew that. 

 

 

I remember listening to transistor radios at the Rockpile. Some times (like a Bengals game I remember) the radio was the only way to know what was going on because it was snowing so hard. We couldn’t see a thing in the whiteout at times!

The Audacy app. which WGR uses, does not broadcast NFL games  live in WNY. I tried once to listen to a game while at work and it wouldn't work. You can listen to Sabres games though.

Somehow, somebody had better views closer to the action. I’m sure it was still delayed, but at least they knew ho had the ball!  It was a crazy game to this little kid. Good memories.

In 1983 I was in charge of throwing a big party for the Centennial of the Brooklyn Bridge. As the ceremonies were starting I got a call from a radio station in Portland Oregon (pre cell phones). The guy from the radio station asked me to describe what was happening, problem was in order to take the call, I couldn’t see anything. Rather than ruin his show, I just made up stuff.

You can really learn alot this way.

Go to Radio Shack and get one of their cheap transistor radios.

Which does not make sense because iPads and tablets are allowed. Those could hurt it you threw them.

Man, this thread is bringing back a lot of memories of games in the 80s and 90s.

 

The evolution from small transistor radios to this major step up:

 

Then the real game changer, the Watchman. Back when the scoreboard was just a big lite-brite and didnt show replays.

 

 

I remember guys having these and after a big or close play the whole row would crowd around that 2" screen trying to catch a replay on the broadcast.
