But if you're continually jump starting your car, there's quite likely something wrong. This isn't just about Bishop. There's also a rookie who is probably the #3 safety that could greatly benefit from Poyer's knowledge and experience in learning what is likely the most complicated non-QB position on the entire roster. 2 1 Quote

If they want him to coach up Hancock and Bishop hire him to do that. There's no need to use a player spot on a guy who won't and can't play. Quote
Big Turk Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Who better to mentor Bishop? I mean is the 16th dude on the practice squad really doing anything anyway on the roster? 1 Quote

BuffaloBill Posted August 27 Posted August 27 I wonder if this is as some sort of player coach for Bishop. 1 Quote

Mat68 Posted August 27 Posted August 27 Slow washed Jordan Poyer still graded out better than Damar Hamlin last season. Poyer and Hamlin were not tasked to do the same things. Hamlin was much more schemed around in a manner that hid his limitations. In a similar reserve role I think Poyer would perform noticeably better than Hamlin. Im not saying he is brought in to start. If there is an injury I would much rather play Poyer than Hamlin. This is what bottom of the roster depth is. Sure up liabilities best you can. No different than Jordan Phillips. I could argue Phillips was the best DT on the field vs the Chiefs. He is in direct competition with Carter. 2 guys for next to nothing can walk in and in a few weeks improve depth at positions. Long term neither are answers. Both positions have young players in prominent roles. Short term viable options compared to both guys coming off a poor camp and preseason Dwayne Carter and Damar Hamlin. Better showings neither signings would be news worthy. Quote

Matt_In_NH Posted August 27 Posted August 27 People are overreacting to this IMO. I bet if Bishop and Rapp are healthy all year then Poyer never sniffs a game day jersey. He has benefit to help mentor those guys and that is part of why he is here. But their availability has not been great so if he gets up to speed and the Bills go down a couple safeties, maybe he plays in a pinch. 1 Quote

Developmental prospects have like a 1% success rate or less. They are almost never a factor and most never see any real game action. Edited August 27 by Big Turk 1 1 Quote

boater Posted August 27 Posted August 27 There are only 16 spots on the practice squad. I like to see them dedicated to up and coming players, young studs with promise. I don't like to see them dedicated to veterans aging themselves out of the NFL. Hopefully this Poyer thing is just a temporary dalliance and not a permanent way of business for Beane. Quote

We'd all love Bishop (and even Hancock) to be a cagey veteran running on instinct, but that's a borderline unreasonable ask. I do have higher hopes for Hancock tho, he seems to have a higher floor to learn from. Quote

Teams are allowed to carry 6 veterans. Looking back to 2020, when practice squads expanded to 16 players, the Bills have actually been better than most at developing practice squad talent. Even then we’re talking about just five players making and sticking on the 53-man roster in that span. It’s not costing anyone a spot. Edited August 27 by JGMcD2 Quote
