With the staff/team openly talking about moving Keon around, that would leave Palmer as the only pure outside guy.  Having Shavers as another size, speed outside guy makes a lot of sense.  
 

If in Beane I’m working the phones to see if there’s any interest for Samuel.. I don’t care we have to give him away at this point.   Moore is the better slot backup for Shakir.

That group just makes sense. A clear Top 3.  Moore can return punts and kicks, while Shavers can provide ST coverage. 
 

If no trade can be had for Samuel, I’d carry 6 WR’s.. at least until guys come back off PUP/Suspensions and then re-evaluate. 
 

I agree completely.  I initially entertained the idea of trying to trade Moore first, but he's a better roster fit the Samuel.  

 

At this point, it's hard to conceive of cutting Shavers, who has an exceptional work ethic, roster versatility, and threshold competence, for a guy (Samuel) with marginal production who can't stay on the field.

I would love it if the bills could move Samuel for a late round pick to a team like the Vikes, that needs receivers. Unfortunately, there’s not much to recommend him since he’s been here. Let it be Moore. To keep Samuel, the bust and let Shavers get scooped by some other team would be the Billiest of Billsey moves. We want and need speed yet when we have it, we squander it. Come on Beane do the right thing. I know you read this garbage before bed or your man servant does.

Joe Marino reported this morning that Samuel is being held out due to spleenal concerns.

 

He also has some pelvic discomfort.

 

 

I didn't know this about Shavers.

 

 

The problem is Occam's.

Sounds like Samuel has mono.  Maybe he's headed to IR.

If Shavers doesn’t make the roster then I have zero faith in McDermott’s “best man wins” philosophy. It will be a bad look for McD in front of his players. I think it is as close to 100% as you can get that he makes the roster. He’s making catches on every level of the field. I think Shavers could be special.

If Beane has to give up a late round pick to dump Samuel’s salary, I think that’s the right move.  Then use the $4m in cap savings to sign vet DB or multiple vet DB’s.

Remember WR Duke Williams?

 

Duke Williams had the same fan buzz around him after a training camp of big plays. He ended up bouncing around between the practice squad and the 53-man. He eventually landed in the CFL.

 

Shavers could end up the same way, he is one of those cusp players. He will bounce around between the practice squad and the 53-man. I don't see him permanently part of the 53.

 

There is no Shavers problem.

Something that makes me feel optimistic about Shavers making the 53 (in addition to his on-field performance) is that it seems unlikely to me that the Bills would roster 5 WR and NONE of them play special teams. In the past when they kept 6 Kumerow was a core STer. Harty, Crowder, Stevenson and Roberts took return duties (or were at least expected to when they made the roster). Maybe I’d make an exception if one of them was a developmental player. But unless they secretly expect Moore to be returning kicks it’s hard for me to see both Samuel and Moore as WR 4 and 5 and neither do anything on teams.

 

Also, could Samuels “illness” have something to do with a trade in the works?

Lots of talk about Shavers the WR but little about Shavers on teams which is interesting because presumably that would be his main role if he made it.

 

Is the idea here that even though we like to play big with extra lineman and/or TEs, we're going to carry six WR this year? I kinda don't see it, especially with all these injuries heading into the season. We have enough guys that we won't want to stash on IR because they'll be back and so will need to make the team and just be inactive for a week or two. 

 

I'll admit that Shavers could quickly become top 4 the moment one of our actual top 4 gets hurt which seems likely with Samuel's track record, but that won't be the case heading into week one.

Specials is his path. I don’t think there’s a Shavers problem. If his play on Specials warrants a spot - and I think it very well might - then he’ll make the team. If not, then he’s a cut as his play solely at WR does not warrant keeping him on the 53. If he’s cut then he’s likely a PS player.

I love how he has played, but ultimately, this isn't some sort of make or break for the team.  We're talking about a 5 or 6 guy in the WR corps (and the latter only if they keep 6, which is probably unlikely).   

 

I doubt they would trade Samuel to make room for him.

Well, if you are on the bubble, as Shavers clearly seems to be, you want to catch everyone's attention one last time in the last pre-season game of the year--to make it as hard as possible for the Bills to not add him to the final roster.

 

He made the catch of the game, of the preseason--and that is for all games this NFL  pre season.  (Someone said it was the best pre-season catch he ever saw.)

 

Very difficult to not add him to the roster now. And watch him go to one of our competitors in the AFC and make an impact?   And watch Samuels on the sidelines all year again?

 

I think Shavers is on the final roster. If he does not come through, and he may not, they can always move him to the practice squad (true?), where he may then be safe.

Right now he looks like a vertical threat and a guy who can catch contested balls. He’s hungry and provides excellent depth. He’s going to make the roster barring a late acquisition of a veteran who will be a cap hit. I’m rooting hard for him.

Were keeping Shavers- Moore will be cut.  Josh and Brady love Curtis.  Not to mention Curtis has a speed skill set the Bills could use.  Curtis is not going anywhere, now is Shavers
