Preseason record in Kelly/Super Bowl era:

1988: 1-3

1989: 1-4

1990: 0-4 (best chance to win it all)

1991: 2-3

1992: 2-2

1993: 2-3

Totals: 8 wins, 19 losses.

Regular season record over those 6 years: 70-26

And the starters played a lot more back then than they do now.

I vaguely remember talk that Gale Gilbert was looking better than Jim Kelly one year (Art Wander comment?).

In the Super Bowl years they didn't run no huddle in preseason. As McDermott said in presser, on a scale of 1-10, how much game planning did they do? 0-1.

Amazing reaction over the weekend.

Well written, as I was going to write a similar response.  Either people are too young or have short memories, our team was horrible during the Kelly SB era in the pre-season.  Levy was smart enough to know PS is just an evaluation with zero game planning.  The Ravens for the longest time had an undefeated PS, but can’t seem to win a playoff game.

We’ve had a number of playoff wins, and the PS doesn’t matter.  So relax, and enjoy this team coming together.  We’ll be fine.  Are the same people griping when we win 13-14 games this season?

If there are any "realists" out there who expected to see what the 2025 Bills' regular season defense is going to look like in the preseason, I've got some really great investments I'd like to talk to you about.

Yeah, but we usually played the starters for a few series and looked good.

Not worth the risk.  Games mean nothing.

Preseason outcomes are worthless and 100% irrelevant. Now obviously the real concern is the early injuries. It’s no newsflash to any Bills fan that our capacity to make a SB depends on our defense. If we don’t flip the script a little on defensive schemes and different pass rush stunts, it will be the same outcome.

I screamed for years to get rid of Frazier for that rush 4 only crap.....only to see it remain. Welp they brought in some fresh D minds, so we'll see.

I would submit if problems persist, half the board will be using pitchfork and torch emojis. Drafting what looks to be an oft hurt Erkel with the 1st pick may not help matters.

Frazier ran the #1 ranked D in 2021 and #2 in 2022. Since he left the D has gotten worse. (at least in DVOA) Maybe you screamed for the wrong head?

Let me go and take out a 2nd mortgage and bet the futures on those prolific preseason offences of the Jets, Patriots and Browns, or do we get to pick and choose which performances are legitimate indicators of future performance.

We’ll just have to disagree on this one, stay healthy and let the rookies and 2nd year players get experience in meaningless football, that’s all these practices are for me.

I can agree to disagree, respectfully.  Keep in mind, the outcome of the game in total wasn't what I was concerned about, it was the defense lo0oking every bit the same recycled garbage from last year.

Cook is holding out, Josh has a bad mustache and a running back is kicking our field goals

How much worse can it get?

Could be worse, our starting LT could get beat on a rep by a highly regarded rookie DE… ohhhh wait, never mind we’re doomed

So lets see - you mean the defense that even McD said somewhere between 0 and 1 on a scale of 1-10 was spent actually game planning for this game?  Or do you mean the starters whose priority is not to go hard but to get a feel for contact and game speed while trying to not get hurt like Taron almost did going too hard?

Drawing conclusions from the first preseason game is about as realistic as the emails you get from Prince's in Africa who need your help to get their money to the US.

Yes, the same people will gripe until we win a Super Bowl. They don’t care about the regular season we enjoy. Even most of the “one before I die” crowd will then gripe until we win another. The wins are all on Josh, and any shortcomings are the result of Beane and McD.  It’s laughably predictable.

Me? I’m with you, looking forward to this season expecting to be entertained with some degree of optimism. It will take a combination of things to come together to win it all, but I think we are well positioned.

Piss poor play from the secondary and the ever invisible, yet highly praised Ed Oliver.

Oliver was very good and very disruptive in his limited snaps on Saturday. There have been good reports on him coming out of training camp too. I was the first to criticize him last year for looking unmotivated and playing soft. I'm hoping he came into this offseason with a better mindset and will play a lot better early on.

But after the 1st preseason game, should we trade Josh for 2112 1st round picks?

They're holding the draft at the Temple Of Syrinx that year so I understand the appeal.

Both teams played base defenses and offenses.  The Bills defense looks every bit as ***** as they ever have looked, including the Bledsoe era.  I'm sorry, but you should see more out of that unit, and there was no change. Piss poor play from the secondary and the ever invisible, yet highly praised Ed Oliver.  Seriously, everyone on the "it's just one preseason game" side of the coin seem to not see that what was displayed looked just like the same garbage as last season, saying the same ridiculous excuses as last year at this time.  Flame away.

maybe the Bills need to hire a Defensive minded Head Coach!

Unless I am misinterpreting your post, you seem to feel that if the Bills fall short of your expectations this year, it will be because of the defense. Please correct me if I'm wrong and accept my apology. Imo, if the Bills falter this year (barring an injury to Josh) it will be due to a lack of offensive weapons.

Since McDermott arrived in 2017, there have been nine NFL drafts. Seven of our first picks have been used on defensive players. I shouild note that two of these first picks were in round two (2020 and 2024). My thing is that the game has obviously changed since the 2010 rule changes. I can no longer visualize a Steel Curtain, or an 86 Bears defense ever happening again. I suppose that the old Arena League was ahead of it's time because the NFL is now an offensive league. I can't see how this can be denied.

McDermott is a defensive coach, and I don't see how this will ever change. He has a Hall of Fame QB and fails to make providing him with weapons his top priority. I am not saying that McDermott is a "bad" coach. My thing is that his primary focus is defense, (secondary in particular) whereas three of his seven first round picks were cornerbacks, and imo there is no reason to believe that this will cease.

Again, I think that McDermott is a good coach, but; if the Bills have a bad season this year it will be his fault (other than an injury to Josh) and he should be fired.

Is one of those investments a structure that spans a body of water between 2 NYC boroughs?
