Is there anyone, that goes to games, that’s been to a NFL game at an indoor stadium in the last 20 years (not talking about those old domes like the Metro Dome or King Dome), that prefers a stadium outside?!? I sure as hell don’t. I’ve been to a bunch of indoor stadiums to see the Bills play: Detroit, Houston, New Orleans, Dallas, Atlanta and LA and much prefer it (although LA is actually open air with a roof and it was really hot). Our new stadium is going to be beautiful and I’m really excited for it. With that being said, an indoor stadium would have been WAY better. It’s infinitely more comfortable.

Yes me. I’ve been to games in Detroit, Indi, and here in St Louis when the Rams were still here and much prefer outdoor. Indoor games just seem very sterile and not the same atmosphere as open air. Outdoor all the way for me. I know it’s a new age, but I grew up going to games at the current stadium and was there for the Baltimore playoff game earlier this year - there’s nothing like it.  Planning to make a trip to the new stadium in the inaugural season for sure.

I agree. I’ve been to many of the current indoor NFL stadiums but there’s something about attending games there never seems quite ‘real’ to me.

Fair. I’m talking about the people financing the stadium though. It’s an interesting experience for sure. I’d imagine most people are willing to do it once or twice a year. The 8+ hours a day for 10+ times a year, in freezing OP, is the crowd I’m asking. “Who, that will be in the elements 10 times a year, prefers that to inside?” I can think of 10 or so games over the last 5 years where the weather was so bad, I wouldn’t walk to the curb to throw my garbage but stood/sat out there for 8+ hours for a Bills game.

This is the truth.  An indoor facility in Philly would have huge potential for semi-regular large-scale events.  Nobody else on the eastern seaboard would offer a venue of that size.  Philly is a major city.  They would get many premium events.

Buffalo, if they built an indoor stadium would not be getting many premium events that their outdoor stadium couldn't host.  The nearby/regional competition for these events are/will be much more attractive cities like Toronto, Detroit, Chicago, Indy, Cleveland, Nashville, and even Minnesota.  We aren't an attractive market to host NCAA football games.  No chance for a super bowl.

I am sure they studied what events they could/would attract and it didnt come close to justifying the additional costs (roof itself, HVAC, etc).

These cities aren't bigger and better because of their indoor stadiums.  They are bigger and better because they have been attractive for major commerce, tech, etc.  People live and sustain life in a vibrant downtown setting.  Buffalo just can't get going.

Buffalo does not the hotel capacity for a Super Bowl.

buffalo has the disadvantage of (1) being close to the border, and (2) having a close market

if you look at the cities you list major cities sre more than 2 hrs away from thst city. If the population of Rochester and across the border was part of buffalo metro area it would be a bigger city and could host a SB

New PSL's?  Higher ticket costs?  New advertising and sponsorship deals?

I don't know all the intricate details on how it works but you can't tell me they are looking to build a new stadium out of necessity

I have no doubt there is some financial motivation behind it

The Bills generate about 80 million in ticket revenue, less expenses. I just don't understand how that pays for itself in a meaningful way by replacing the stadium every 20 years.

I understand it's an older stadium, but the build price of a new stadium is a very significant portion of total ticket sales over the life of the stadium.

I don't think it's crazy to think that some other motives are going on. As far as fu money goes I can't think of a better price than an NFL franchise, it's not crazy to think these guys care about how nice and modern their owners box is, or that they want to build and design their own stadium.

Yikes

What a shame.

Makes me even more grateful we will not have one in Buffalo for now and into the future.  Attended football games in the Carrier Dome and it was the worst experience ever attending college or pro games. To me, not really football anymore.

100%! I’m a Buffalo native and a pro football romantic, so the concept of indoor football disgusts me.

If Philly decides to join Chicago and Cleveland and DC in the trend for domes, then the NFL will soon be down to only 10 “cold weather” teams: Buffalo, New England, NY Jets, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Cincinnati, Denver, KC, NY Giants, and GB.

I’m defining a “cold weather” team, by the way, as one whose stadium averages at least half a foot of snow per year. Note that the NFC would then have just 2 cold weather venues!

When we think of the great games in NFL history, the weather is often part of the story, creating some of the seminal images. Especially true for cold weather teams like Buffalo.

This is also the case for many of the Bills' games I attended.

And the climate plays an important role in so many aspects of the game for the players.  It toughens them up, gets them ready for winter games. If you play almost all of your games in domes you don't get that.

The next few generations of Bill's fans are lucky, getting NFL football as it was made to be played.  Outside-- and on grass!

I’m with you, I don’t understand not controlling the elements when you can.

you are also creating a usable year round venue for events. no board gaming convention is going to pick an open air stadium for their 3 day convention.

Even if Josh and the Boardgame Boys are playing a Catan marathon at the main table.

COME ON, BE A MAN....

Build an open air, catch pneumonia than die. I will put a picture of John Wayne on your grave.

.

Pneumonia is an infection of the lungs that can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi. You can catch pneumonia by inhaling or being exposed to these infectious agents, often through respiratory droplets spread by coughing or sneezing. While pneumonia itself isn't contagious, the germs that cause it can be passed from person to person

It has absolutly nothing to do with being in a cold stadium.

In fact more people will be wearing scarfs and and other things to cover their mouth in the cold which would actually reduce the chance of catching pneumonia.

and I have still not heasrd one single person explain how we were going to pay for a dome unless Pegula's ponied up another $2 billion. You were not going to convince tax payers to pay up another 2 billion

This is exactly why an indoor stadium doesn't work for Buffalo.  Think about it - in the case of a Super Bowl, you have 50k plus people with enough money to buy a ticket in the same metro area.  This crowd will have a few ham and eggers that are fans of the team, but the vast majority will be VIPs and the wealthy.  People with that kind of money are not staying at the Hampton Inn in East Aurora or even the Hyatt in downtown, which is in desperate need of some kind of refurbishment.  About the only hotel on the US side of the border that fits the bill is the Marriott.  That covers what, 200 rooms?  That's barely enough for the two teams playing along with NFL personnel.

Crossing the border, especially in this climate, is not going to be something the league deems acceptable.  Even if that was allowed, that opens up a few hotels in the Marriott's category on the Canadian side of the falls.  Not nearly enough to host the largest TV spectacle of the year.

Don’t see a post about it but Denver is going to be building a new retractable roof stadium completed by 2031.

How often do teams open retractable roofs? I feel like every time I see Lucas oil it’s closed lol

When the Toronto series was going on, I remember the first game, preseason against the Steelers, driving in and seeing the roof open. But by game time they had shut it.

Just a billion dollar gimmick and a showcase for modern engineering.

I think much of these discussions run deeper than football and are part of a WNY inferiority complex.

No I think most western New Yorkers are very comfortable with who we are and we don't need to be Denver or Dallas

I think it's the out of town Bills fans who think we have a inferiority complex

Buffalonians are tough hard-working people and we don't need to keep up with the Joneses

I've been all over the country and there is a character in Buffalo and Western New York that most of the country does not have.. we are fine with being ourselves

And we certainly don't envy other cities

I am a WNYer until I die and agree with everything you say about us. But I see a lot of discussion on here that tends towards "no one wants us because of taxes and snow and we never do anything right." I just assumed those were local people because who else cares about NYS taxes?

No I assume those are expatriates

Who have left Buffalo to Sunny pastor and think we lag behind America in every single category

They think we are too stuck in the past, they think we refuse to want buffalo to grow, and and that we are fine with being a rust belt City with no future

Those are talking points I've heard from expatriates for multiple decades
