We all live in Atlanta now, but he hopes to move closer to his wife’s family on the west coast of FL (Sarasota) in the next couple years. My wife refuses to endure an entire summer in FL again, so it looks like we will need to have split living arrangements. I’ll never live thru winter again full-time, so going north is out. We like our house and immediate area outside of ATL, so I’m guessing we’ll have a small part-time house or condo that allows dogs in FL. My wife loves the mountains, but I think we’ll just have to save that for vacations. I always thought of The Villages as strictly a retirement community, but our sons played against them in HS football. Apparently there are young people there to look out for the old people there. STD’s for everyone! . Yeah, we'll likely follow our daughter, and we have some time considering she's only 6. However, her current top 2 places to live when she gets older are Buffalo (thanks to her cousins) and the planet Mars. Even though I've sworn off winters as well, looks like I have some cold temps in my future either way! Quote
Ned Flanders Posted July 10 Posted July 10 Within two years, we'll either be in WNY or the Gettysburg, PA area. 1 Quote

We are assuming our son will be on the west coast of FL in a few years, and we will need at least a small place there. I’m adding some time before the opener this year to take my wife to Watkins Glen and Niagara on the Lake. She’s only been to WNY for quick in & out trips, so we’ve never enjoyed much of what there is to offer. It’s a trial balloon at this point, because WNY summers/falls and FL winters are not a terrible combo. I’d like to make exploring a regular thing before the opener every year and see if the area grabs her/us. One very found memory as a kid was going to the Thousand Islands. I was young, but it made a cool impression. Maybe that’s for next year before the opener. It’s not quite time to decide about our long term plans, but we are close enough to think seriously. . muppy Posted July 11 Posted July 11 we are happily retired in a house we purchased in 1995 in San Diego Cali. Which is itself a HUGE city of various neighborhoods and 2 phone area codes. Inland means more sun and less gloomy coolish weather .than coastal coastal conditions are a full 10 degrees cooler than my part of San Diego. So as a crow flies you go east from del Mar approx 7 miles. that is where I am. It is hard to believe people still are buying real estate as expensive as it is. But weather is what keeps property values high and people wanting too live here we will stay here for the duration. Glad we bought when we did. we considered moving to be closer to my son and his family. But they love it here too so will visit often. I wish I was a bit closer to my grand daughter. oh well 1 1 Quote

I know some people that love it and some people that hate it If you want to be with older people 24 / 7 - then that is your place. No young people. No sounds of kids laughing / playing. The area seems to close down by 700pm. Very clique-y. Very little diversity - if at all. This time of the year - hot and steamy. Golf courses are marginally maintained (except for the tournament courses). And when the snow birds come - all he## breaks loose. 1 Quote

oldmanfan Posted July 11 Posted July 11 We’ll stay just north of Indy where our kids (hopefully grandkids at some point) are, and vacation where we want to go. Unless our governor continues to make Indiana sicker and dumber. Quote
Toomstone.Part.Duex Posted July 11 Posted July 11 I have about 8-9 years till retirement. I'd like to get an RV and travel the US for a while. Does anyone know someone who did this? 1 Quote

Does anyone know someone who did this? I will make a big recommendation if you are going to buy a large RV based on two separate extended family members who did it. They both customized after the factory with multiple companies working on it for different things. When the problems started each company denied it was there problem, and that someone who touched it after was responsible. Try to make sure it is all one company and they have a good warranty. 2 Quote

Does anyone know someone who did this? I bought a relatively small RV at retirement, and we did a good deal within a three state area of Virginia for a couple years, three/four day trips at a time. The best advice I can offer is to subscribe to a few of the many forums that are available. Great advice on do's and do nots from people actually doing it. Everything from tow vehicle horsepower to internet issues to countless other issues that come up, as well as great recommendations on where to go. Scores of folks pointing out mistakes made, so you don't. Great communities and priceless info in those forums. Edited July 11 by sherpa 1 1 Quote

The BLUES Brothers Posted July 13 Posted July 13 Quick caution on the "follow your kids" motto...We were looking to move to be closer to our son, and his newlywed bride. They ended up taking new jobs 2 hours from there, so good thing we didn't make the move (yet). We will look into it again, if/when we're blessed for grandkids to come into play, and looking forward to it. As for snowbird locations, more and more are considering AZ area, and after seeing Sedona and other areas, i can see why. 1 1 Quote
frostbitmic Posted July 13 Posted July 13 Bequia, St Vincent & the Granadines ... Give me a 2 BR 2 Bath hillside villa with a nice pool and lanai. (one can dream right ?) Unfortunately my wife doesn't share the dream. Our Daughters are here in Rochester so this is where we'll stay ... For now anyways. Quote

As for snowbird locations, more and more are considering AZ area, and after seeing Sedona and other areas, i can see why. We sold our last house 4 doors up the street to a couple from Florida. Their daughter had just had twins with serious birth defects that would require multiple surgeries and round the clock care. They needed to be closer to help. Months later the daughter’s husband decides they want to be closer to their lake house, so they moved more than an hour away. They tolerate the SIL only because the daughter married him, and she’s the breadwinner. Go figure. 🤷♂️ Tangent here! We want to travel on Christmas Day rather than sit home alone looking at each other. The son and his family will be in Florida, and it’s depressing to have nothing going on. We’ve considered a number of possible locations, but I’m curious what others might suggest. I haven’t been out west much other than several trips to California (mostly wine country and the general San Francisco coastal areas) and a couple trips to Las Vegas. Anything people would recommend? We’re not really beach people, and it will be winter. I have no desire to ever ski again, so….what to do? Anyone have suggestions? The mention of Sedona and AZ made me curious. . Just Jack Posted July 13 Posted July 13 I'm always intrigued by the articles about moving to another country for retirement, but I don't know if I want to. The wife keeps mentioning the Maryland area because it would be warmer and still get four seasons. I said if she wants warmer, we could go to Arizona or New Mexico. She doesn't want that warmer though. Quote

His wife is from there originally, but he was saying the pace of life is so much slower and it's way more affordable to live there. He seems genuinely really happy and excited about this upcoming move. 1 Quote
