Clowney is nearing the end of the line. But he still doesn't go from being a full time starter straight to a "camp body" competing for a spot. Someone will sign him as an off the bench situational pass rusher and guarantee him a roster spot.

Let's compare those sack numbers via snap counts:

2023 Clowney - 9.5 sacks on 654 snaps

2023 Epenesa - 6.5 sacks on 387 snaps

2024 Clowney - 5.5 sacks on 652 snaps

2024 Epenesa - 6.0 sacks on 612 snaps

Then you factor in age - Clowney is 32, Epenesa is 26 (will turn 27 this year). Epenesa also has him on reliability and wear and tear.

Getting rid of Epenesa for Clowney is a downgrade in practically every way except for name value.

Clowney had double the pressures last year (44) than Epenesa (21) on only 30 more snaps.  I don't want the Bills to sign Clowney as it feels we're bloated at that position already but he's a better player than Epenesa in both run defense and rushing the passer.

I'll take 9.5 sacks on my roster

That was 2 years ago. And again, that was 9.5 sacks on 654 snaps v. Epenesa's 6.5 sacks on 387 snaps. He had to be on the field for almost 300 more snaps than Epenesa to get 3 more sacks. And that completely ignores last year where he had 5.5 sacks on almost exactly the same amount of snaps. He won't be getting anywhere near that 650+ number if he were here. This stat you're going back to isn't the argument you think it is.

So did I, but then again blocking was greatly discouraged in architecture school. 😉

Reminds me of a joke told by the late great Van Miller: “ I am proud to say that during my high school career I put three students in the hospital. (two beat pause) “All of them in the maternity ward.”

Then don't sign Clowney, because he won't give you that.

Baltimore got the most out of him like a rented mule. Kudos to them.

I mean, ex-Panther, edge rusher, I've heard of him.  What more do you need?

All jokes aside, I'd bring him in as a camp body.  Why not?

I’ll pass…DE is a position where there’s a ton of competition already.  I don’t need a major role for Clowney this season.

Agreed. I'm happy with a 4 man rotation of Groot, Bosa, Epenesa, and Jackson (with Solomon as 5) to start the year. Keep them all and come Week 7 if everyone stays healthy, you worry about making room for Hoecht then - if we even have to. Losing Miller and Smoot and gaining Bosa, Hoecht, and Jackson is a big time upgrade. We don't need to do anything else at DE and I don't think Clowney is an upgrade over what we have now.

This guy made a fortune based largely upon a play in college where he wasn’t even blocked.

To be fair I remember Rivals had Clowney as the single highest rated player in his high school class across all positions. He wasn't quite like McDavid in hockey levels of hype coming out of high school, but Clowney was definitely one of the more highly regarded high school football players I can ever remember going into college.

I was talking about him coming out of college.

I don’t hate the guy, he’s from my wife’s hometown. He just got a ton of hype for a few plays, including the one where he was unblocked and a guy lost his helmet. He wasn’t a terror off the edge, but he was good at what he did.

And blew up a 170lbs RB.

Maybe a few years ago, but so many guys now, and most are young, so I don't think the Bills will be interested.

But never hurts to check things out.

Liked how he looked for the Ravens a few years ago, seemed rejuvenated.

Do we have to adopt every stray? We just drafted a crap-ton of D-liners.

I think AJ's days are numbered after the draft.
