The cap issue is irrelevant.  I can't believe that even Mike Brown would be so stupid as to approve of a trade of Hendrickson to a top contender in the AFC.  If they pull off a trade, it's likely to be to the NFC or an AFC bottom feeder.

I think the whole trading within your conference thing is overblown. How often does something like that really come back to bite a team? Every team has good players. Yea, the Bengals make us stronger, but Ideally they'd expect to get stronger from the trade too.

I think that’s kind of the point.  It rarely ever comes back to bite teams because 2 Super Bowl contenders within the same conference rarely trade impact players to one another.

It actually IS true. The money doesn't matter. Have you seen the Eagles books?

Here's an explanation:

If this was true, then top teams would be trading for players like Hendrickson all the time. But it virtually never happens. If you look at the teams who have been identified as potential landing spots, its Indy, Carolina, and Cleveland.

I used to think like you that the cap doesn't matter, but the trades and signings that DON'T happen among top teams with expensive rosters put the lie to that. Also, the Eagles are currently $30 million under the cap.

Why didn't the Bills go and get Davante Adams last season instead of Cooper? Adams is (and has been) a MUCH better receiver than Cooper, but the Bills opted for the latter because they felt they couldn't make it work with the cap.

Eagles are that much under the cap?  My bet is he ends up there.

So in addition to a likely high draft pick, the Bengals are reported to be looking for a player on defense. So it potentially would cost the Bills a pick and a player (that would likely add to the dead cap) in addition to paying Hendrickson a huge raise. For a player now on the wrong side of 30...I would pass.

I agree in theory to most of your post points, but DE's tend to play into a deeper age at high levels, more than maybe any position.  Could be because they are 'hardier' boys by nature

Buffalo Bills get compensation update on potential Trey Hendrickson trade

Buffalo Bills get compensation update on potential Trey Hendrickson trade originally appeared on The Sporting News

The Cincinnati Bengals have been in a months-long standoff with star edge rusher Trey Hendrickson. The 2024 sack king has made it clear he isn't playing on the final year of his contract, and wants a long-term deal with more guaranteed money. And while the Buffalo Bills signed Joey Bosa to a one-year deal and recently extended Greg Rousseau, this is a move they should be all over.

It was reported on Sunday that the Bengals were now listening to trade offers for Hendrickson, and now they expected trade compensation has been revealed.

"Teams that have recently inquired about Bengals star Trey Hendrickson were told Cincinnati’s asking price included a young defensive player and a 2026 first-round pick, according to league sources," Dianna Russini reports. "The player heading back does not have to be a pass rusher."

Considering the Bills' lack of success at the top of the draft over the last five years, trading a first-round pick shouldn't worry Brandon Beane or Bills fans - especially when you're in win-now mode like the Bills are. Send the pick, as well as any defender the Bengals want not named Christian Benford or Terrel Bernard and call it a day.

I’m stuck on Rousseau still becoming a thing at DE and I think the idea should be to pair him with an elite guy, not replace him with one.  I’m certainly not sending out Rousseau plus a 1st for Hendrickson.

Dude looks like a moderately respectable writer from his LinkedIn ; however, this is a thought of his, not a report

The problem with Rosseau, is that he is an ideal DE2. I also still can't shake the image of him getting ragdolled by a mediocre Chiefs oline.

Embarrassing such a loaded team has that much free space.

Any trade would likely not involve Greg.  But I could easily see Bosa dealt or maybe a AJE/ Solomon pkg?  And the report says it doesn't necessarily have to be a DE.  Obviously all speculation but interesting to consider.

Bills Traded the Maholmes Pick to the Chiefs, just saying.

Am I the last person in the expansive sphere of NFL fans to learn that Philly is $30 million UNDER the cap? Is their entire defense on rookie deals? Because that entire offense is STACKED with $igned $tuds. (Admittedly, I have not yet done the rigorous online research of seeing an itemized accounting of how such a sham is in fact possible. I'm still in shock.)

We also traded the Worthy pick to them. NE traded Bledsoe to us. Jax traded Johnson to us, etc.

Void deals. See the video I posted. They have the most money locked up in the league, but they use the cap the most aggressively.

The problem with that is what do you think the odds are that we'd pay Rousseau 80m with 54m guaranteed on one side AND pay the insane cost that an "elite guy" would cost on the other side - while also paying a top QB contract? To me, that's *incredibly* unlikely. This is why we took a chance on Joey Bosa on an injury prone discounted rate, signed Michael Hoecht, and Drafted Landon Jackson. With what we're paying Rousseau (on top of everything else), we need to hit on a cheaper option on the other side.

Which is why I imagine this scenario has Rousseau involved in a Trade Offer for Hendrickson. We're scraping pennies together right now after all the deals we did. We're dead last on cap space and it's not looking good in future years, again, bc of all the deals and extensions we did. To fit a guy like Hendrickson on and pay him what he wants, we'd need to unload a big contract like Rousseau's.

This is why I was out on extending Rousseau. If we need an Elite guy opposite Rousseau for him to be effective, why spend 20m a year on him? If he's something we absolutely needed back, why are we every year saying "we need a pass rush" and yearning for guys like Hendrickson?

All that said though, I agree with you. I'm not giving up Rousseau and a 1st Round Pick for Trey Hendrickson. He's very good. But I don't think he's worth all of that. I'll take my chances on Bosa this year and Hoecht and Jackson in future years to be the answer. And bc of our Cap situation and all the deals we did, we're really going to need to rely on the Draft in the next couple years. We can't afford to give up 1st Round Picks, imo.

The Bills have no cap space - the very least in the league. Theu bought their Hendrickson in the form of Bosa, and they’re just hoping/praying he remains healthy. Because when healthy, he’s definitely as good as Hendrickson.

The Bills cannot make this work given their cap situation. Plenty of teams can, though.

To bizy spending are money on mid talents. 12 mil here 15mil there for replaceable players.
