2024 Changes

With Dorsey relieved as the OC, Brady will now audition for the role, but barring this team valuing the ball I don’t anticipate much changing this season. It’s more likely they have a losing record than a winning record when the season concludes. McDermott and Beane will need to select an OC and DC which will be critical hires.  McDermott is and should be on the hot seat. His teams under his leadership are outcoached, unprepared, undisciplined and continue to find new games to lose they have no busy losing.

Big changes coming on D!

YTD, Von has ONE tackle and an assist. Honestly, I don’t see why he’s even active on game days. Big cap hit if released but his game looks down.

SECONDARY: Tre, Poyer and Hyde likely gone. That leaves Rapp, Benford, Douglas, Elam, Jackson and Johnson. Will need to add a safety.

LB: Milano, Bernard and D Williams. Need to add LB depth

DL: Gotta get DQ and AJE resigned. Ed, Groot and I’d resign L Joseph. Most likely moving on from Settle and Phillips.

Punter: Martin probably won’t be back

Offensively: Don’t expect Morse to be back. Will need a center. Most importantly will need to upgrade the WR with additional playmakers.

Josh needs to spend the offseason working on fundamentals and improving his craft.

Will be a defining offseason for Beane and McDermott. They squandered three seasons in a row now!

I already know this is going to get me slammed, so let me just say it's NOT the move I would make or would like to see....

But a post June 1st TRADE of Stefon Diggs leaves $8.8M of dead cap money...but opens up $19M of cap space. If this year keeps spinning out it really wouldn't shock me to see him want to be moved to a contender if he feels next year will be more of the same (Example: McDermott is brought back). It's a possible scenario that Beane will have to entertain if it comes to it as we would likely be able to get some nice compensation.

It's a mess, it really is. Difficult to pinpoint when the malaise set in, but the 13 second game may have been this team's Wide Right, messing with their psychology. Like that 1990 team, they bounced back, but their resiliency took a bit hit, so when adversity hit--and they hit like the Plagues of Egypt last year--they did not have the resources to recover. Same with this year. Like a player with a concussion, it has taken less and less trauma to knock them out. The Jets game was a blow, but they came back, off balance but on their feet. But the second blow, the Jags game, was too much.

I agree with Greg Cosell and Chris Sims that the Bills offense is just average, after Allen and Diggs. But worse teams have won the Super Bowl--in fact, I think they WOULD have won the SB after the 2021 season. It's not talent. It's spirit.

What to do? Fire McDermott and rebuild. By the time the new stadium is ready, the next iteration of the Bills, with Allen its leader, will be ready.

it depends on the final 7 games..

mcdermott needs to go regardless

they should try johnson at safety, he cannot cover 1 on 1 that is for certain

2 new safeties, get some lb'er depth, resign jones n possibly epenesa

miller needs to restructure, draft a center n wr, sign a vet wr, keep joseph 1 more year

id like white here but that cap hit is troiublesome

finally get an offensive minded coach that allen respects and will actually listen 2...

maybe tell josh allen to go with aaron rodgers on a retreat to get his head cleared

put some bonuses in his contract in regards to utilizing checkdowns

lastly, get a witch doctor to assure the team of yearlong health n prosperity

Von: dead cap hit of $32 million if released after this season. $15 million after 2024. Best decision: keep him one more season, see if he can become at least productive again.

Honest assessment: on offense, Allen is the only untouchable. Diggs has trade value (not much though, given his contract) if he really wants out and becomes a distraction. He can try another team that underperforms in the playoffs, the Cowboys. Knox has a bad contract given his performance. $7.8 million dead cap hit if released after 2024, so like Von, your best bet is to keep him around and hope he gets healthy. Dawkins is a keeper because of his contract, plus he's still performing at a high level. Nobody else. You'd want to keep Cook because of his rookie contract unless you trade him. Torrence too.

On defense: No untouchables. Von, because of the contract, is a keeper for at least another year. The guys still on their first contracts obviously too, like Rousseau. I'd have said Milano pre-injury is close to untouchable, but now he's a keeper because of his contract. Dead cap hit is unmanageable until after 2025, so you keep him and hope he makes it back. Tre has a $10 million dead cap hit after this season, and I'd be really surprised if he comes back with the Bills at least - they'll have to eat that and work the cap in other places. And I agree on the safeties.

So this is a rebuild period. Rebuilds can be done really quickly these days after the bad contracts start to be shed and younger players step in. Having a top QB (and yes, I still consider him as one) like Allen is still the key. Everything else is manageable. But you've got to be willing to accept one, and probably two, down seasons. That means wait until 2026, with a new coach, and given their seemingly inseparable bond, probably a new GM. Having Allen makes the Bills an attractive position for both. Might as well get on with it starting on Black Monday 2024.

To preface: I don't think they will be firing McDermott after this season.

I think they will likely have to go with a younger group on defense based on the salary cap and simply where guys are in their careers.  They have 10 picks in the draft and I think that is something that wasn't an accident and I would expect alot of the picks to be dedicated to supplying that side with youth and cost controlled players. That said, this is a historically good WR draft and I'm expecting that to be a high priority pick.  If they finish 7-10 or 8-9, that would be roughly pick 12-16 which would a great spot to draft or even move up to take one of the top WRs in this class.

They are currently 30M over the salary cap for next year. I would expect the following changes:

Cuts/retirements: Mitch Morse, Tre White, Jordan Poyer, Deonte Harty, Siran Neal, Nyheim Hines, Rasul Douglas

Combined with restructures to: Ed Oliver, Connor McGovern, Tyler Bass

Gets us to roughly 20M in cap space.

Guys who won't be released or traded before June 1 because they would cost more to cut/trade than to keep on the team: Dawson Knox, Stefon Diggs, Von Miller, Kaiir Elam

They could also do things like extend Taron Johnson to reduce his cap hit (or cut him) which would free up more space.

So I would predict roughly 24M-27M in cap space heading into the offseason with 10 picks in the draft.  And thats without touching Allen's contract which I would hope they hold off on for now. I think thats plenty of cap space and picks to make some roster changes in the offseason and, if I'm being honest, I don't think they are losing much in the way of cuts as White hasn't been on the field consistently in 3 years, Poyer has aged, Hyde has aged (although I'd entertain him back on a modest contract), Douglas just got here (I'd also consider giving a new contract that lowers his cap #).

Round 1: DT

Round 2: CB

Round 3: RB

Love this, but I'm going to need the DT to be undersized.

The Corner needs to only have Man Coverage skills.

At Running Back, I'd like for him to be mediocre with us, but have success elsewhere. That would be what we need.
