You never know what may happen on a play also includes bad things. Orton gets his head taken off and fumbled and he’d be crushed. You know it to be true Yup. Bad things can happen. But choosing a bad result with no effort isn't always the answer, either. The question of why he isn't revered here is answered with that one play. It isn't so much that play is that his whole career here was a "business decision". That play just seems like the best example of his efforts for the entirety of his time here. 1

He gets as much love as he deserves. As a Purdue alum, I was rooting for Orton throughout his NFL career. Then the slide happened.
Big Turk
Because he sucked? The play I remember him most is needing a 3rd down conversion on a scramble late in the game we were trailing and he went down on his own before contact when it looked like he could have gotten the first down if he just tried to keep running forward... No respect for that man. Could you imagine Kelly, Fitz or Allen doing this?? Edited October 6, 2023 by Big Turk 1

Whether it was the right decision is irrelevant - it was a "business decision" and not a "legends of the game" decision. 1 1

Despite everything he was still the best QB between Bledsoe and Allen which is incredibly sad. You think he was better then Fitzie? Why are we bringing back guys from the draught era anyways? They won nothing. Isn't it enough to just go and root for a championship caliber team in the present? All the extra is just that extra. There are a few draught era guys who played like champions. Kyle Williams, Fred Jackson, Terrance McGhee and maybe Aaron Schobel come to mind. But the organization should be focused on the present unless they are putting someone on the Wall. As for Orton, he had his moments. But the slide was weak. Just like Cam Newton not diving for the fumble against the Broncos in the Super Bowl. BananaB
Why don’t we give every mediocre player love?
Livinginthepast
The Orton era was indeed a bizarre time. Never have I seen a guy play professionally who looked so uncommitted or disengaged from the rest of his team or the place he was playing in. It was really weird. We were so desperate for a winner in those days there is no way that Orton wouldn't've have seen that and as a normal human being not wanted to at least do his best to end the drought and win. Yet it was the opposite with Orton, he was a true mercenary or (an even more negative analogy) he was high priced escort. Yup, no feelings involved with that guy, just do what you have to do and take payment and GTFO. The worst thing about Orton is not anything he did but the strange fact that he was completely superior to our #1 draft pick EJ Manuel. The team was actually competitive with him and really should have made the playoffs. A lot of people are citing the Denver slide as the moment they had had enough with him. I held on to the Raider game in December but Orton had a pretty awful game with the season on the line and we were done and dusted after that.

ChronicAndKnuckles
I posted a very similar thread, but about Tyrod Taylor. I got a **** load of negative reactions for that one. We are so spoiled w/ Josh Allen now. Now those guys seem worse than they really were. I think Orton was a decent game manager and you could see the whole offense starting to flow much better when he replaced EJ. Kenosha2Buffalo
"playoffs on the line" it was the second quarter lol. Longshot anyways. His effort was minimal but he was a lot better then anyone else we had in that era lol
