A longer contract lets the team spread the bonus hit over 5 years, and reduce THIS season's salary cap, when it matters more. Then they get to restructure down the line and make more of the salary a bonus,  since he has a sixth year.   It gives him and his agent a big number to publicize, as well. Since I don't know his deal with the agent, I won't speculate on if this makes the agent more $$ up front.

Basically, it probably be MORE expensive to make it a shorter deal, even if you could get the player to agree to it.

AFAIK, the NFL is pretty strict on agents.  To the best of my knowledge, the rules are: 1) the agent gets paid when the player does, not before 2) the NFL caps the agent's commission at 3% of the player's salary

I have some mixed feelings about this, to be honest.

I was absolutely stoked on the one hand about getting a future HOFer on our DL to put some pressure on QBs.

On the other hand (and I realize this sounds insane), I would've just rather resigned Hughes for another 2 or 3 years at a price $5 million less per year so we could go out and get a couple other potential pieces like a #2 CB and an RB

I haven't watched enough of him lately, but is Miller still a force on his own? I thought Hughes was a really good player for us and a team leader. His stats might not have always reflected it but he was really good for us last year.

I am relieved this isn't actually what I thought it was. It's really a 3 year, $52.5 million contract. But my honest initial reaction when I saw 6 year, $120 million for a 33 year old (in just over a week) was NOT excitement.

First time posting in this thread since page one, but did I read this correctly that Von Miller is getting $120 million guaranteed and we are barred from releasing him at any point over the next 6 years??

Btw not gonna read any responses to this post, just wanted to express my dissatisfaction.

The thing that really stands out to me is that Miller could of stayed in LA or some other place but wanted to come here.   During the season he said winning the super bowl is contagious.   He wants more rings.  We want a ring.  Its about winning.

Not sure he is elite anymore.

He had 9.5 sacks in the regular season and 4 in the playoffs. He also had the most QB pressures in his career last year. Edge pass rushers age well. It's not CB, RB or WR.

Denver-based Bills fan chiming in and I think the answer is yes, but to temper expectations. Is he 2014 Von Miller of current Aaron Donald level dominance? Probably not. Can he still bend and manhandle people and get you 10 sacks a year and provide an individual pass rush that we really haven't had recently? I think so. The key to this all will be Rousseau's development. If he takes a step and Von Miller is even old Von Miller, then I love it. He's an upgrade over Hughes in my opinion if we're comparing the two, and I'll be the first to say that Jerry belongs on the Wall.

Last season:

1. Von Miller had 9.5 sacks in 15 regular season games (Jerry had 2 in 17).

      - 4.5 in 7 with Denver / 5 in 8 games with L.A.

3. Von Miller had 17 QB hits (Jerry had 7).

4. Von Miller had 12 Tackles for loss (Jerry had 1).

5. Von Miller had 54 tackles (Jerry had 26).

6. Von Miller had 12 QB hurries (Jerry had 19).

7. Von Miller had 30 pressures (Jerry had 26).
