Andre Smith traded to Bills for conditional 7th

Seems like Dodson is playing up a storm. He stands a good chance of being a very good backup. Matakevich too.

Not that we're a powerhouse here at LB, especially with depth, but you can't have starting caliber guys at depth positions all over the team. It's not sustainable. IMO not a major concern, but maybe you're right.

I see people saying he’ll take Taiwan Jones’ spot, but I highly doubt that. Jones is a gunner. Smith is not.

More likely, it means the possible end for Vosesn Joseph. Corey Thompson and Tyrel Dodson seem locked in as the top two backup LBs on defense. They likely figure that if they keep a sixth LB, he needs to be a special teams asset, and a Joseph is not. Maybe Joseph makes the practice squad.

Yep, the last training camp report said Joseph has been too slow to react on plays

A conditional 7th rounder on 2023....... is that more or less than a bag of deflated footballs?

Ha. It’s so smart of Beane and shows the value of relationships with other front offices. Get a guy you want to bring in without having to hope he clears waivers for next to nothing.

And my guess is if he doesn't make the roster the compensation is zilch.

Marrone's 2nd year we had about 8 guys on the roster purely for teams.

Hmm. I don't recall that.

Regardless his coaching ruined anything good we had anyways

Two kickers, a punter, a long snapper, Easley as a gunner (he played only 3 snaps on offense all year), Thigpen as a return specialist (0 snaps on offense all year), Larry Dean (8 snaps all year on defense) and Ty Powell (40 snaps on defense but our most used non specialist on teams).

I have never been a fan of the Carolina connection signings. Maybe this one will pan out.

I'm curious...have you not liked the specific players they acquired, or not liked the "Carolina connection?"  It's just an odd statement because the connection itself shouldn't be viewed as a negative thing.  I mean, Beane just traded less than a bag of footballs to get a guy who might be able to contribute on ST because he obviously has a relationship with the Carolina GM.

Could this put Taiwan in jeopardy?  Maybe he takes his spot on ST which allows us to keep a different rb3?  I had Taiwan as a virtual lock but he hasn’t been healthy and his camp and has been injury prone throughout his career

I have been saying that I think Yeldon has the lead on Taiwan both because of his familiarity with Dabolls system and the fact Taiwan is not healthy and been plagued by injuries in his career.

This trade for me immediately made me think Taiwan just got on even shakier ground given his big edge of Yeldon would be ST contributions.

I think Taiwan is in serious jeopardy of not making this team now.  I prefer Taiwan myself if he was healthy, but I think his window to earn a roster spot is starting to close unfortunately.

Different positions. Taiwan is a gunner. If he doesn't make the team because of injuries or just because they prefer Yeldon it favour Robert Foster in the battle for WR#6. Smith plays inside on kickoff and as a 'wedge' blocker on kick return.

Different positions yes, but they are only going to keep  so many players whose only real value is ST.  So if Andre takes one of those spots, it still lowers the chances for Taiwan.  Especially in a COVID year where they need to balance depth across the roster.

I don't think the two are linked at all. Taiwan is linked to who stays as the last corner and the last receiver.

Smith is linked to the other backup linebackers, the backup safeties and the DiMarco / backup tight end decisions.
