I know but they are harmless (except to themselves). I saw a Dead Fan selling acid at a concert, directly in front of a uniformed police officer. The guy thought the cop was "part of his trip." The cop let him go and told him to get lost.

I was at a Further show NYE at the Bill Graham in SF (only saw the Dead once - Fell asleep during Space. Seriously?  If you have to be stoned (and I wasn’t) to enjoy a song....sorry sorry I digress). Anyway the wife and I were sitting next to a young couple there with their 12 year old. I asked where they were from. South of San Jose I think. I asked when they did for a living. They said “we’re farmers). Well during the show they passed me a joint. I declined.  Then during a set break they handed me a baggie. “Mushroom?”  I said “you guys ARE farmers!”  ?

The Park Ave Band were always a blast to see live in Rochester, while Shakedown Street filled those Northern Colorado canyons with sweet sounds.

I saw them many times at the Warehouse back in the days. Max Creek, Resurrection and Holy Smoke played there a lot too.

 

A couple of my favorite Dead shows were the 7/4/86 show at Rich stadium where the Dead opened for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and then Petty's band became Bob Dylan's band to close the show.

Another great show was at Saratoga sometime in the early 80's. It was a warm drizzly day, at one point they were singing "Fire on the mountain" and you could see the lightning over the mountains in the distance. The music and camping were great that weekend.

 

Also in the early 80's I saw an accoustic show with just Jerry, Robert Hunter and a stand up bass player at the Auditorium Theater in Rochester... great stuff.

 

Lately it has just been the yearly DSO show at Frontier field that brings in a few thousand fans and they always play a great show.

  I went to college in Albany and had a blast at that show with a bunch of friends. Easily one of the best shows of the year imo (1983). Here it is in its entirety.

unfortunately I don't think there is a soundboard recording. There may be better taper recordings out there. Either way a great show, impossible to capture the energy of being there.⚡⚡⚡

To me 1977 was their best year. If anyone is trying to get into the Dead I would suggest 5/8/77 Barton Hall, Cornell. Many say the best Scarlet/Fire ever. This show gets all the hype and for good reason as it was an excellent show but the next night 5/9/77 in Buffalo at the Aud was just as good IMHO.

Yeah, I would give 1977 the edge over 1972 for my fav year, those shows rock.

Tom Hamilton of JRAD, among others, just joined him onstage.  The two of them jamming on acoustics with Don was slapping the stand up is really fun to watch, naturally Jay lane does a stellar job on drums as always

I just read through the whole thread and listened to a few of the vids posted. I have friends that are dead heads and one plays bass in a cover band. I appreciate everyone commenting on what it is that they love about the Dead. I have just never been swept away by them, but I love the enthusiasm that the fans have for the band. I don’t dislike them, but they don’t really move me strongly one way or the other. I am envious that they don’t register strongly with me the way they do for you guys.

 

Funnily enough, my favorite band was mentioned in this thread, the Beach Boys! I guess Brian Wilson is to me what Jerry Garcia is to you.

That's it right there. I went to college in Sacramento, about a 1/3 of a mile from Cal Expo...the huge concert venue in Sac at the time. Every year when the Dead would come to Sac, the Dead Heads would find any piece of grass w/in a mile radius of Cal Expo and camp out. One of those pieces of lawn was adjacent to my apartment on busy Howe Ave. I'd look out and see these folks all week. I didn't have to go to the concert to "smell the crowd." I smelled it whenever I opened my windows. Hot, summer Sacramento. The scent of herb, body odor, patchouli. I hated Dead week.

2.5 years ago I brought 2 friends, north of 50, to see dead and company in Camden NJ.  My one bud is as conservative and reserved as they come.  He now asks me each year what shows we're going to.  It's definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but it's a whole lot of fun watching people get on the bus.

I think it’s a bit like Little Feat.  The songwriting isn’t amazing, but some of them just stay with ya.

DC Tom is one of your best friends?  Tell him we miss him but if he’s thinking of popping back in please gracefully tell him we don’t miss him THAT much.

That is a simply amazing song and "Wake of the Flood" is my favorite album.

Fun fact #1: This is the song that the Grateful Dead played the most times in their 30-year touring history.

Fun fact #2: John Phillips of the Mamas and the Papas wrote this song but was too drunk to remember, and Jerry "borrowed it" and the Dead made it their own, leaving Philips to joke that he ought to get paid every time the Dead play it on stage.

I just listened to the second set suite from 3/24/73 at the Philadelphia Spectrum.

 

He’s Gone>Truckin>Jam>Dark Star>Sing Me Back Home

 

Hoooolllly cow. It was so stunning, so jaw dropping, so amazing, that I had to share it here.

 

The He’s Gone is the first played since Pigpen passed away two weeks prior. That and Truckin are outrageously well played, but it’s the 20 minute jam that follows that just dropped my jaw. Positively other worldly excellence. Just when it can’t get any further out, it drops into the shortest Dark Star on record, out of the ashes of which a stirringly beautiful Sing Me Back Home arises. They follow this masterpiece suite with a rockin Sugar Magnolia and Johnny B Goode to close this historic 30 song epic performance.

 

The show is available on YouTube, Archive.org, and as an official release (Dave’s Picks series). I highly recommend at least listening from He’s Gone onward.

 

Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Put on your headphones and close your eyes and float away.

You may like ‘Legion of Mary’ a short-lived band with Garcia, Saunders, Kahn, Tutt and Fierro (sax/flute). Search youtube for shows. LoM was my favorite rendition of a Garcia band. Cannot locate the link but interesting side note that a bunch of nuns belonging to the ‘Legion of Mary’ Catholic group mistakenly showed up at a SF show and had a great time.

This was made during a time where the Dead split for a short time and went their own ways. Weir formerd a band called "Kingfish."  I actually saw this band in a fairly small club. The lead singer/bass player was from the New Riders. 

I for one prefer the work Weir did with Kingfish over almost anything he did with the Dead.

I saw them in Telluride at the Fly Me to the Moon Saloon in '87, Saturday night after the Dead played the town park that day. Mathew Kelly tore it up. Wild night on an incredible weekend. Afterward I drummed all night in an old schoolhouse with King Baba Olatunji and the Drums of Passion, then we all gathered in the town park for a Baba led sunrise heart opening ritual to celebrate the Harmonic Convergence.🌎⚡❤😁

Since Weather Report Suite is getting some love over the past few posts -- and it should, it's gorgeous and is one of my all time favorites -- I thought some foiks might enjoy this. It's Bobby Weir playing an acoustic demo of the entire Weather Report Suite. He didn't have words for parts 1 and 2 yet, but he had the music worked out. This is about mid 1973. Post spring tour but prior to the Wake of the Flood recording sessions.

Hearing it stripped down, acoustic....just beautiful. This is now and forever my answer to anyone who dares to try to tell me that Bobby isn't an absolutely incredible musician.

Apparently people used to think Creedence Clearwater Revival shows were attended by people who thought it was an actual baptist tent revival.
