The Big Gamble: Hydroxychloroquine

I'm glad you're not my doctor.  It is estimated that only 12% of Americans are zinc deficient.  There's also stuff like this, but keep grasping at straws:

Large doses of zinc prevent your digestive tract from absorbing copper from your diet, so regularly taking too much zinc depletes your body's copper levels. Copper deficiency can lower your white blood cell count, putting you at increased risk of an infection, since white blood cells make up a part of your immune system. Low copper levels also negatively affect your red blood cells, preventing proper oxygen transport and causing anemia.

Zinc has been shown to interact with various prescription medicines. For example, take it with tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro and generic) and you’ll reduce the amount of both the zinc and the antibiotic that your body absorbs. It can also interfere with the absorption of penicillamine (Cuprimine, Depen), a drug used to treat rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson’s disease (a rare genetic disorder).

Many companies make a combination Zinc/Copper supplement for this reason.  In terms of treating Covid-19, the Zinc usage is short term.

their "bigger" study will have 450 patients, tailored to meet the pre-ordained, desired result

Definitely enough to try to bury this cure, since it is a double blind study

maybe they should just track the success rate of people recovering from the virus after taking the drug

Most people recover, which is why the double blind test is so critical.

Giving people HCQ and seeing them do better is what would happen whether most of them had HCQ or not. Hopefully the double blind study will show that HCQ makes a difference.

I'm positive he said it couldn't hurt you.  Now some people are smart enough to listen to their doctor, but the Trump counter-culture believes him above all others, even when it contradicts fact.

The side effects are well known, as the drug has been around for years. Trump may have said / implied it couldn’t hurt when there are no known treatments.

Pretty sure he never told people to take it without a prescription from a doctor.

It's implicit.  Because the first question one would ask is "how do I get some?"  The answer would be "from your doctor."

Be prepared to wait a long , long time. There may not be a vaccine for years, if ever.  Is there a vaccine for any other known Corona virus ? I mean , there’s a flu shot but it doesn’t make you immune to the flu.

I'm prepared!

Luckily, there's been no shortage of my favorite beverages

Ugh.  That study (also) isn't using zinc.

As a doc, how can you even say this? You don't trust that the specialists who design these studies know better than you, an anesthesiologist? Are you that far up Trump's ass? I'm genuinely amazed by this attitude coming from an MD.

Your final question hits the nail square on the head.

No, it's about you defending his irresponsible remarks after the evidence to the contrary has been supplied to you.  He's not a doctor, and he's not real smart, but you ARE a doctor.  You should be smarter, and you should have known better.

Yeah, Trump just pulled HCQ out of his ass.

Give me to a study that uses zinc.  Which, as I've said a thousand times, is important.  And which, BTW, Trump never mentioned (hmmmm...).

Actually, I'd like YOU to provide ME with some data that would make me want to believe you over a panel of NIH infectious disease experts who have advised against using the cocktail.  I'm not saying you are wrong, but I'm saying you're pulling your ideas out of your ass pretty much like Trump did, while the experts say different.  Stop watching Hannity.

Do we realize that neither side has actually conducted enough clinical trials to determine the effectiveness of this 1 way or another?

But it is funny that the idiots screaming about Trump promoting something unproven are also promoting something unproven.

I’ve only seen the clinical trials showing one result sadly. Bigger trials are needed with double blinding but the initial results are not positive.

There have been lots of stories about HCQ but no trials showing it’s effective.

The initial results on Remsidivir, however, are very promising.

Amen. As a scientist who has developed testing for other diseases on the very same platforms currently being used for covid19 diagnostics and serology this whole situation is disgusting. I always knew that Americans in general were woefully inept in understanding how actual science works, but when you toss in all the partisan rancor on top of the scientific ignorance it creates the ***** show we are currently witnessing. From BOTH sides.
