Buffalo_Gal
The 2015 study on cloth masks. Transmission with masks. 2017 study: </snip> This systematic review and meta-analysis quantified the protective effect of facemasks and respirators against respiratory infections among healthcare workers. Compared to masks, N95 respirators conferred superior protection against CRI (RR = 0.47; 95% CI: 0.36–0.62) and laboratory-confirmed bacterial (RR = 0.46; 95% CI: 0.34–0.62), **but not viral infections or ILI**. Disposable, cotton, or paper masks are not recommended. The confirmed effectiveness of medical masks is crucially important for lower-resource and emergency settings lacking access to N95 respirators. In such cases, single-use medical masks are preferable to cloth masks, for which there is no evidence of protection and which might facilitate transmission of pathogens when used repeatedly without adequate sterilization. </snip>

But I will say, despite being very hard to track, there is a fair amount of research that shows covid-19 is not much more lethal than the flu. This is an open question for researchers. The problem is covid-19 is far more infectious, so the potential for an epidemic is much worse. And of course there's no vaccine and we're still learning how to treat it which means even if covid-19 is not more fatal than the flu in a biological sense, in a practical sense it is a lot more widespread and harder to treat and therefore more fatal. Once a safe vaccine is developed it will be more like the flu, albeit with different symptoms.

Imagine we were talking about AIDS/HIV and condoms instead of COVID-19 and masks. A has unprotected sex with B. A has protected sex with C. A tests HIV+ Under Berenson's (il)logic, the CDC recommendation to B and C should be as follows: "B should avoid having sex with others until he tests negative after 30 days." "C should feel free to engage in sex with others right away since, after all, A was using a condom." That is how stupid this argument is. No one -- no one! -- is arguing that masks of any type are 100% effective against COVID-19 transmission, just as everyone -- everyone! -- understands that condoms are not a foolproof way of avoiding HIV transmission. Please don't take your public health advice from fools. Edited October 3, 2020 by The Frankish Reich

Please don't take your public health advice from fools. The masks are virtue signaling. That's all they are. Under Cuomo's current regulations, COVID is non transferable once you sit down at a table in a restaurant. In that situation, the only person that could give you COVID is the filthy peasant serving you, in which case the peasant must wear a mask at all times, along with the ones in the kitchen, even though it was proven a month or so into the pandemic that it was not transferable through food.https://www.cdc.gov/condomeffectiveness/latex.html#STD "Laboratory studies have demonstrated that latex condoms provide an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of STD pathogens." "Laboratory studies have demonstrated that latex condoms provide an essentially impermeable barrier to particles the size of HIV." Your post is hyperbole. And completely false. When use properly, condoms actually work, where as masks, when used properly, do next to nothing to stop the spread of COVID.

At any rate, we as a country are going to have to have a conversation about sick leave from work. One of the big cultural issues we have that caused this to spread rapidly is demanding people work unless they are near death or dead. It's so ingrained in us that we feel like we are letting down the place we work for if we don't show up. I don't know how you change that but hopefully we start to see it move to the forefront when it comes to preventing this type of thing from happening again. I feel we have to have a serious conversation about health and aging in this country. What is the common theme with many that have died? Comorbidity is a huge problem.
