Went to Knotfest with my son last night.

Behemoth - This was our third time seeing them (I seriously cannot believe I just wrote that).  Just your average, every day devil-worshipping music from Poland.  They are entertaining to watch.  The music is bearable.  Not my cup of tea, but I got through it.

Gojira - This is one band my son has never gotten into; nor have I.  I was shocked at how much I liked them.  Not nearly as heavy as I thought they'd be and the vocals weren't limited to growls, which I liked.  I actually look forward to seeing them again.

Volbeat - Since I'd seen Slipknot once before, I was actually looking forward to seeing Volbeat more than Slipknot.  The songs I'd heard from them (just a few) were really, really good and I figured they'd rock out and put on a great show.  Ho.  Lee.  Chit.  Was I wrong.  They played about an hour.  I'd say 4-5 songs were really good.  The other ones ..... best way I can describe it is this:  A mixture of the Killers, Europe, Tiffany and Debbie Gibson with a dash of Nickelback.  I will say this, though, the vast majority of the crowd LOVED them.  And the place was packed.  I wouldn't avoid seeing them again if they were an opening act.  But I would never, ever pay to see them as a headliner.  Pop-rock at its finest.  Kinda.

Slipknot - Phenomenal.  Non-stop energy.  They really fed off the crowd.  I couldn't name one Slipknot song if my life depended on it.  But I do listen to them (second hand) when my son listens to them and I like them.  As I mentioned earlier, this was my second time seeing them.  Even better than the first.  I will see Slipknot every time they're in the area.  They are that ***** good.

On my way out, I was talking to my son about how crowded it was.  A guy next to me said he'd heard that they were turning people away because they were sold out.  I"m not sure how true this is, since it was at Saratoga Performing Arts Center, which is an amphitheatre with a lawn.   The Dead drew over 40,000 people in 1985.  They may have change capacity rules, but I don't think the crowd was that big last night.  I'd put it well over 20,000, which fills MSG.  Great crowd; great night.  I"d recommend the show to any metal heads out there.  For 3/4 of the bands, anyway.  And maybe you can bring your teenage daughter to enjoy Volbeat!

I was there as well.   It was incredibly crowded, and trying to get out of there was worse than most Bills games.

In terms of the music I thought Gorija was incredible, much more my type of music.   It was my first time seeing Volbeat, while their singer is really good and they are a tight band, I am not sure I understood the range of their music.   They reminded me a lot of Cheap Trick at times, and at other times I could hear the Slayer influence, not bad, just more like a really polished cover band.

This was my first time seeing Slipknot.   I was pretty underwhelmed.  Without Corey, who is without question one of the best frontman going, I am not sure the band is anything special.   Weinberg's kid is a great drummer I will say that, but the energy from the crowd far surpassed the movement on stage.   Sid looked like he didn't know what to do with himself the entire show and the bass player was stagnant.    Granted I was pretty exhausted by the time they played, but I just didnt think it was one of the better shows I've been too.  For comparison sake, Korn blows Slipknot off the stage.

Additionally, they played for an hour and 45 minutes and a good half hour of it was Corey talking.    Not my cup of tea I suppose.

I have been to a bunch of shows & a couple of fests this year but the best I saw so far was Mark Knopfler. He was supported by an amazing 9 person band & he still cranks on guitar. He looks like your old, quiet, weird uncle at a family reunion but he is engaging and humble on stage.

I saw him in Connecticut a couple weeks back.  I've seen him three times and always hope it won't be the last.  His post Dire Straits work is incredible.  Check it all out if you haven't.  He has a few songs he plays at almost every show but he always throws in some older ones too.  Once Upon a Time in the West, Done with Bonaparte, and Heart Full of Holes were nice surprises this time through.

I think this tour might be it for him.  He's 70 and the last show on the tour is at the Garden with Bonnie Raitt.  It's 3 times as big as the other arenas he is playing.

Thx for the info about the last show...I am going to investigate if I can pull this off. I agree, this may be the last time to see him live.

Damn. I was thinking a few months ago he would be one I'd like to see in concert, so when I looked at his tour, no dates worked with my schedule and location. Even the last one might not work, but from what he has left, it's the only possibility.

Seeing Everclear playing outdoors tonight. Last concert before that here in Chicago was Queen and have to say the old guys were pretty awesome even with no Freddie...

I've never seen Everclear, but I've always wanted to.  Heard a great interview with the lead singer a couple months ago.  Awesome dude.  I have no doubt it's gonna be an awesome show.  Enjoy!

Just found out that this current tour The Who are travelling with an Orchestra, so this should be interesting. Only curious as to why a band as big as The Who would have tickets as low as $15. I saw some that were as low as $4, but it was essentially side stage tickets. Original face value was $65 before taxes and fees, and up. Meh. Even if they're not that great, the bucket list factor is worth the price.

The ticket outlets do that every year with select shows. We saw The Who at Alpine Valley for $20/ticket (lawn seats) a few weeks ago. We also saw them in Tinley Park in May, but we paid full price - around $70/ticket. Both were excellent shows! They're playing alot from Tommy and Quadrophenia, their two rock operas. If you're a casual fan, you might not recognize some of what they're playing, but they will play quite a few hits too. (I'm a big Who fan and I love the lesser-known stuff they're doing.)

The conductor, first violinist, and first cellist are touring with the band, but the rest of the orchestra is local to whatever venue they're playing. They get a couple of hours to rehearse the whole thing together the day of the show. It's pretty amazing, and shows how good these musicians - the rock band and the orchestra - are.

Enjoy the show!

Yeah. I’m not the biggest Who fan but for $15 bucks I decided to go. Not very familiar wit Quad but I love Tommy.  It was great, even the stuff I wasn’t familiar with was beautiful with the orchestra.

Unfortunately, they only played about five songs. Pete Sang Who Are You, and then Roger Daltry walked off stage. Apparently he had vocal issues and couldn’t finish. Pete came out and announced that they’re postponing the show but will do what’s they can to reschedule.

Bummer. I could tell that Roger was struggling, even though he still sounded great. They were spreading out the shows so he had a few days of rest in between, but I guess that wasn't enough. I hope you get to see a full performance.

I'm not mad. Either A I get a refund, and I saw a 30 minute Who concert for free. Or they reschedule, and I get to see them again.

Saw Phil Collins.  While his voice is still in good shape, I had no idea prior to him coming on stage, that he has become a cripple...even after multiple back surgeries.  Entire show except for one song was done with him sitting in a chair.

Very sad for someone who isn't even 70.

From what I understand, the fact that he was able to do that at this point is a miracle within itself.

Yeah.  I was sitting there wondering why a man who is worth millions is out there touring instead of doing whatever he can to get better.

He also mentioned that he can no  longer drum or play the piano due to injury/surgery complications.

Yeah. I hear it's his son drumming now. It'd be great if Phil could at least eventually muster up the strength to drum on "In the Air Tonight." Or atleast the iconic portion of it.

As far as his intentions, I'm sure there was a financial aspect. But also there's the aspect of any musician or performer that just love to perform. I'm sure there's also a motivational aspect to prove to himself and others that he can still do it. Either way, props to him. His music has never really been my cup of tea, but I really respect his musicianship and songwriting.

I heard there's a video out there (I haven't looked, nor will I) of his son starting a drum solo ... a roadie bringing a chair out for Phil to sit in and watch the solo ... then the chair either collapsing or falling off the stage.

My wife and her father are going up to Oklahoma to see ZZ Top with her brother, and spend time with him and his family for a week. I was a bit bummed that I couldn't make it because I love ZZ Top. Then they announced a veteran's benefit concert that Joe Walsh hosts in a different city every year. Lineup is:

  • Joe Walsh
  • ZZ Top
  • Brad Paisley
  • Sheryl Crow
  • Jason Isbell

"And More." Which usually means some gigantic surprise guest, or a local opening band or two. $45 for the ticket including fees and whatnot. Jason Isbell I'm not very familiar with, but the few songs I know are good. Paisley and Crow are neither my cup of tea, but I'll watch/listen because I paid. But Joe Walsh and ZZ Top I'm excited for. It's the night before Veterans Day so I don't have to be home early. And it's somewhat close to where I watch the Bills games, so I'll probably just park in one spot for the day and walk.

Thanks for the heads-up, it’s on TMZ. No big deal, he finished the show.

So apparently the Experience Hendrix tour isn’t selling very well. So this website I signed up for once called Goldstar gives them away and just charges the BS convenience fees. I’m sitting row R of the front section for $13.50. I know @Gugny saw it last year. Different lineup, but super excited, especially for the price and in a small theater.

  • Buddy Guy
  • Billy Cox (from Jimi Hendrix Experience / Band Of Gypsys)
  • Joe Satriani
  • Jonny Lang
  • Dweezil Zappa
  • Doyle Bramhall II
  • Eric Johnson
  • dUg Pinnick (from King's X)
  • Chris Layton (from Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble)
  • Mato Nanji (from Indigenous)
  • Todd Park Mohr (from Big Head Todd & the Monsters)
  • Ana Popovic
  • Kenny Aronoff
  • Calvin Cooke (from The Slide Brothers)
  • Chuck Campbell (from The Slide Brothers)
  • Henri Brown
  • Kevin McCormick.

Wow!

Saw Ana Popovic last winter at the Tralf music Hall in Shea's district

She was smokin hot and super talented

As long as they have the Satriani, Pinnick, Aronoff set, this is worth it.

I'd never heard of Mato Nanji before I saw him in this show.  He smokes and he's on the stage A LOT.  Ana Popovic was at my first EH show, but not the last one.  She was missed.  The Slide Bros are cool.

This is great lineup.  You're lucky.  Looks like they swapped out Taj Mahal with Ana Popovic.

And like I said .... that last trio will a) drop your jaw and b) make the cost of the ticket WELL worth it.

Look forward to your review.

I'm excited. From everything I've read, if you go in there expecting spot on impressions of Jimi Hendrix, you're gonna be disappointed. If you go in there understanding that you're gonna hear a bunch of the world's best guitarists, playing in their own style, it's gonna be awesome.

The first time I saw this show, KWS was in it and he blew everyone away.  Jonny Lang was also phenomenal.  Lang is a great guitarist, but last time, he used this (what looked like) semi-hollow body Telecaster and it was very tinny and had zero balls.  For your sake, I hope he comes out with a Strat.  He's a great guitarist.

Just buckle up for the Satriani set.  It is ridiculous.

I'm excited to see him, and Buddy Guy even though this will be my fourth time seeing Buddy (I named my dog after him). Also, Billy Cox is gonna be there, who was the bassist for the last little bit of the Experience, and Band of Gypsies. I've read it's like a three hour show with an intermission. I can't wait. It's about two blocks from the Bills Bar, so I'll probably just hang out there and then go to the show. Why pay to park twice?

It was awesome. It's like no concert I've ever seen before. I didn't realize that Chris Layton from Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble was going to be the main drummer for most of the show. Eric Johnson was great. Dweezil Zappa started the show. Johnny Lang started his set playing "All Along the Watchtower" acoustically like Dylan, and slowly worked his way up to playing it like Hendrix. Then he shred it on "Fire."

Second half after intermission was even better. Started out with the great Buddy Guy. This was personally my favorite part, as I'm a huge blues guy. This was my fourth time seeming Buddy Guy (I named my dog after him). It was interesting because he's usually quite a showman, but actually played a much more reserved role. Billy Cox from Band of Gypsies played bass during this set, and the played Hey Joe and Red House with the Slide Brothers, who I'd never heard of before but want to look them up. They're two guys that play pedal steal guitars. Buddy and each of the two Slide Brothers took a solo on Red House.

Show ended with Joe Satriani playing the heavier stuff (Voodoo Chile, etc.) along with  dUg Pinnick from King's X on bass, and  Kenny Aronoff on drums. Satriani is just a virtuoso on guitar and put on a clinic. If I didn't witness it first hand, I truly would have thought it was some sort of synthesizer or someone singing because I've never heard a guitar make those noises before.

If you're a Hendrix fan, blues fan, or just a guitar nerd, don't pass up your chance to see this show live.

The Mrs. and I saw U2 in Auckland last night.  GREAT concert!  The last time I saw them was 32 years ago in good ol' Rochester.

Unfortunately,  we're now stuck in the Auckland airport, with all flights back to Nelson canceled due to fog.

Went to the VetAid concert last night. It's one that Joe Walsh puts on in a different city every year on the Sunday before Veteran's Day. Last night was at the Toyota Center (Houston Rockets home arena) Huge lineup.

  1. Brad Paisley- Never been a fan, so I didn't recognize any songs except when he did an Alabama medley. Dude could surprisingly wail on the guitar though.
  2. Sheryl Crow- Recognized more songs than I thought. Pretty good.
  3. Jason Isbell- A new artist playing more traditional country.
  4. ZZ Top- The  reason I went. Love them, but a little disappointed but not surprised in their setlist. Played more Eliminator than anything, and I'm a bigger fan of their earlier stuff. But they only had about 50 minutes to play, and those songs are their money makers. But when they play live, even most of their pop like stuff is great because it's stripped down for the 3 piece band.
  5. Doobie Brothers- Not sure why these guys aren't in the Hall of Fame. Great set of nothing but hits.
  6. Joe Walsh- Incredible. Weird af dude though, but you can tell he has fun, which is rare for a lot of the older acts.

Drew Carey was the surprise MC. Bit of salt in the wound considering I'd just gotten there from watching the Bills lose to his Browns. Overall it was a great show for a good cause. Promoted a lot of different veteran non profits.

Also, I bought the cheapest seats in the house. I knew for a fact I was back row in the upper deck. When they scanned my phone, and printed my ticket, it said section 108. I don't know if it was a clerical error or they didn't sell enough tickets, or what. But that was about what center ice would be for hockey, 20 rows up club level. Great view, and wider, more comfortable chairs. Saw all of this for a $25 dollar ticket, not too shabby.

Jason Isbell is one of my favorites, and although he's newer than everyone on that bill he's been a solo artist for about 10 years and with the Drive By Truckers before that.  I checked out his short set list that you got to hear and I'm surprised that he didn't play this one, I listen to it every Veteran's Day.

This might deserve its own thread, but I'll throw it in here:  The Black Crowes are BACK!  Playing "Shake Your Money Maker," in its entirety (and other tunes).  First live shows since 2013.  This is ***** huge.

August 20 – Cincinnati, PH @ Riverbend Music Center

I will be there! Bought my ticket about 2 hours ago.

My record-store-guy is best friends with Chris Robinson and will be DJ'ing pre-concert. I'm begging for passes to get backstage.

I just looked at tickets for Saratoga.  There's no way in hell I'm paying those prices.  *****!!!!

Lawn seat for me was $48 grand total.

I don't do lawn.  Not worth it, to me, to wonder if I'm sitting in someone's puke or piss.  Too many amateurs on the lawn.

Cheapest inside seats were $135.

Seats in the section I usually try to get for other Saratoga concerts (which usually cost 100-120/each, tops) are over 400 bucks/each.

That's a big ol' FU to their fans.  Oh, well.
