My first topic thread ever on this forum.....I tread lightly in here with you sharks :)

Since my time of leaving the military and particulary this year I have been trying to educate myself on politics.....I try very hard to look at things without bias and let opposing views enter my mind openly so that I can evaluate them and have at least a informed take.   I admit I find this very hard to do for some reason.

What I think I have come to a conclusion on is I cant be a left or a right......because both sides make mistakes and dont follow through on the promises they make to get into office.

BUT.....and for some reason this really hits me where it counts.    I think that our President is a representative of all of us to the world.....so I need for that person to ACT Presidential.

For this reason.....there is no way I can support Trump.....who I find to be a scumbag of the highest order....everything about him repulses me......it seems that he does things in such a way that our senses KNOW that it is wrong but it is done with such a regularity that you become numb to it and it becomes the new normal (and when I say this I am NOT defending past democrat presidents.....only that when you see that the White house briefing has become a war zone/drama......a president twittering hateful things about a dead McCain (who I am sure was not perfect) but just on twitter all night spewing hate and negativity regardless of what is going on in the world and not the proper time for it (if there actually is a time)......

Is Trump doing some positive things?   Possibly.....but his lack of Presidential presence overshadows all to me.

So to my question.   What are peoples opinions of Tulsi Gabbard.   I have been studying her interviews and I have to say I am impressed right now.....now as a democrat but as a person.   I freely admit that being ex military myself and the fact that she is ex military and served in the same conflicts I did probably have an affect on my judgement.

What opinions do people have here?   As a President or maybe even a Vice President?

I hope you did not come here to find well informed, well formed opinions based on reality....

I like your posts on the main board, I read through the responses here to avoid repeating what others may have already said.

Good for you for getting involved. I won't rehash what many have said, and like you won't try to change your opinion.  DR does a much better job of laying out the concerns I started to have about the two party system 10 or 15 years ago.  I'm not so sure about everything he believes, but i decided long ago to cast my vote for those who will hurt the country and my family least.

I believe Trump, for all his warts, is a national treasure. Before writing me off as just another crazy, i  would describe myself as a centrist on many issues.  I think reasonable taxation is reasonable, and the redistributive theory of our tax code is a reasonable way to approach the world. I support equality among people, struggle with abortion beyond a certain point in a pregnancy, think the march toward more socialistic policies is a mistake, abhor the ACA while recognizing what followed was predictable and likely cooked into the system. I feel quite strongly that our immigration system is a mess, that our current open borders policy is a recipe for disaster! and that our political leadership intentionally kicks the can down the road for fun and profit. I dig my hand into my pocket to assist friends and neighbors in need, and like most people who feel similarly think that's just kinda what decent people do. My problem is with excess, and govt excels at excess.

Back to Trump being a treasure.  To me, he's like the noble soul who is called to empty the septic tank when it is full.  He's necessary, relevant and without him, a situation that has been occurring over time morphs from a situation to a challenge, to a problem, to a disaster with potentially far reaching impact.  In a perfect world, the septic tank guy comes in and he's professional, well-mannered, thorough and gets the job done with a minimal amount of spillage.

Trump isn't that guy, but for all his faults, this septic tank is pretty damn big, it doesn't want to be emptied and it fights back.

As for presidential demeanor, it's overblown and oversold.  I didn't see a reference from you re:BO, but acknowledging he was a much smoother liar/cheat/fraud than DT is something I am fine with doing.  However, it is 100% clear, with no wiggle room to debate, that he oversaw the surveillance of the opposition candidate for president, that the election of 2016 was not based on anything resembling a "fair" election, and in most other times in our history the masses would be looking for him to answer for his actions.  Another poster mentioned he's met him and he seems like a good guy--and while I respect his right to feel that way, on this basis alone he simply is not.

As for your candidate, if she turns out to be a candidate that I can believe in with real ideas that match my views on many or most of the important issues of our time, I'll hold the door open for you so you can go in and  cast your vote and cast mine shortly thereafter.  However, when one is a low level player---none of the jackals have yet to attack, and that changes everything.

btw, as a reasonable guy, I think it's acceptable to recognize McCain's service as a veteran and stand in awe of the brutality he endured and still be able to recognize he was a political gutter rat.

She went to visit with Assad who's Iran's buddy and who was widely condemned by Obama and Hillary. So, today's GI Jane is supporting our enemy but gets rather "prickly" about it when questioned. But, she sounds nice and if she changed her hair color to red she'd be a CILF?

https://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/tulsi-gabbard-syria-bashar-assad-enemy_us_5c5b01aee4b087104759c3af

When Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) was pushed Wednesday about whether she thinks Bashar Assad is an enemy of the United States, she said the Syrian dictator is not.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” she was asked outright if Assad is a foe of America.

“Assad is not the enemy of the United States,” Gabbard replied, “because Syria does not pose a direct threat to the United States.”

Correspondent Kasie Hunt pressed the congresswoman, who recently announced she’s running for president in 2020, about her January 2017 meeting with Assad during a trip to Syria shortly after Syrian government forces retook the rebel-held city of Aleppo. Gabbard had told CNN’s Jake Tapper last month that she doesn’t regret the controversial meeting. She reinforced that sentiment with Hunt.

You must feel better now that you attacked her for being a woman instead of sticking to her politics.

I am very anti war......

WIll always carry the scars from it.   When I left the military I eventually worked my way into a job as a graduate student advisor here at one of the Southern California Universities......

Just today I had some Middle Eastern female potential applicant come in to see me.....and I am trying to do my job and I remember the constant worry of females dressed just like them possibly being strapped down with bombs when I was in the Middle East........I am trying to talk to them and it was so difficult but i made it through and they were happy when they left.

I love my country......I hate the politics

I'm mostly lurking over in these parts, but man, where was this kind of attitude during the long-running issues with The_Dude?  John, I'm not sure if you have any idea what I'm talking about, but just to be clear, I don't mean this as any kind of shot at you at all.

So I like her ideas and I like the way she carries herself......as I said I feel like the white house press conferences are a battlefield now and I envision this woman who would actually step to the podium to talk to the press at times and it NOT be a toxic environment.

Why do you believe that the toxic "battlefield" feel of press events is Trump's fault, and not, say, idiots like Jim Acosta who do nothing but pontificate stupidity in the guise of a question, shout inappropriate questions at inappropriate times, make false statements (again in the guise of a question), and ask disingenuous questions (before refusing to yield the microphone)?

Is Trump and Sanders just supposed to take being falsely attacked without complaint, in order to "act presidential"? Is your answer to go back to Obama's "presidential" solution to try to cast out entire networks (instead of just disruptive "reporters")?

You just keep getting worse and worse at this. My post was attacking her for her politics. I added in a little shot at 4mer for his post above. Are you going to alienate everyone who disagrees with you? I can see why DR has told you to ***** off. I'm ready to second that motion.

It's how he's always been.

For those who don't remember. I tried to be polite and patient with him for the first few weeks of his posting. I reached out through PM to try to talk like humans as well - all of that was met with unstable responses and complete asshattery.

So I tried being direct. That didn't work.

So I tried being rude. That didn't work.

He's not a real poster. He's not honest about why he's here or what his true intentions are. He's an asshat of the highest order and should be ignored by reasonable people down here imo. His only goal is to slide every thread with irrelevant comments, divide posters through mockery or outright lies about what was said, and derail any real discussions about certain topics...

Of course when you look at what those certain topics are - the picture becomes MUCH more clear as to why he's here.

John,

I've been a fan of hers ever since she started criticizing the regime change war in Syria, and Iraq and Libya for that matter.  Being from Hawaii doesn't hurt also.

Btw, not sure if I ever mentioned this to you, but I grew up in Riverside. Been in Buffalo since 1990--the start of the Bills' Super Bowl run!

Cheers,

TPS

TPS.....excellent!

I work and live here in Riverside.   I live downtown riverside close to the Mission Inn.   You probably know where that is.

There is just something about Tulsi that I could really get behind......like I would literally help in her campaign office if I could I want her to succeed that much.

I hate the research I am finding how the democrats tried to shame and shun her for throwing her support behind Bernie Sanders.   Who has some very radical ideas but I like him a LOT more the Hillary Clinton who just seems fake and toxic to me.

This is where the earlier comments I made about trying to stop looking at politics as Dem v GOP or Conservative v Liberal/Progressive et al.

There's the establishment uniparty - which favors regime change, perma war and all the perks those policies give the establishment (control over the people, government, while inflating the contractors' budgets) - then there's everyone else. Tulsi has made her bones in Congress opposing those policies - but the "left" can't hit her on being against perma war (because until Trump, the "left" was against perma war) so instead they use their favorite weapon: identity politics.

She made comments about being opposed to gay rights, years ago - at the same time Biden, Obama, Clinton, and others in the left were touting the same anti-gay marriage lines Tulsi made - so they buried her with it.

Because identity politics isn't about ending racism and bigotry, it's about weaponizing and exacerbating them.

What has Trump done to earn this praise from you?

Several things;  I'd be interested to know your feelings on them and what alternatives you think he should be pursuing.  I also want to know why you think everything is 'overshadowed' (and how much time you spend each day immersed in hype media).

-Judicial appointments:  Consistently nominated justices (esp BK) who will honor the Constitution over current-day populist whims

-Immigration:  tackling this head on without the need for PC cover like 98% of politicians.   Yes a wall helps.  A longer wall will help more.  No, $5B isn't going to bankrupt a country that runs $1T deficit every year.  Everyone was on board with this during the Bush/Obama years when we built hundreds of miles of fence.  Now suddenly extending it is a huge issue?  Why?

-Trade war:  China will push and take forever.  If we never stand up to them, it will just get worse and worse for the US.  Trade wars hurt, but are absolutely necessary every now and again considering our adversary.

-Tax bill:  though it hurt me personally, it mirrored principals I have long held about taxes.  Lower corporate taxes to match the rest of the world, reduction of illogical Schedule A allowances, maintaining low capital gains.

In general, I assign very little credit/blame to a sitting POTUS over economic news, but there's nothing to complain about regarding jobs, wages, etc.

Biggest shortcomings:  deficit progress and environment.

John, I think you'd discover that most of the "Trump supporters" in PPP were not original supporters. Most (including me) never took him seriously or found him personally off putting prior to his victory.

What's happened in the 2 years since then, aside from the exposure of a deeply treasonous palace coup attempt by members of both political parties and compromised elements within the US Intelligence Community, is Trump has governed like a centrist. Despite the media screaming (without factual evidence to support it) that he's a Putin cut-out, or a dictator. The reality is he's been steady - which is a HUGE accomplishment when you consider how much flack he's had to take from day one.

Trump has issues, he steps on plenty of rakes. He's not a saint - but he's not the evil POS that he's been painted to be in the MSM.

If you can come to terms with that reality - then you have to ask why has so much money and time been spent trying to paint an otherwise centrist leaning POTUS as Hitler reborn? Is there more to the story?

You betcha.

And it ain't pretty.

Please do.....I responded exactly as I feel.

I don't like him as a person either.  He is the very last POTUS in my lifetime I would like to meet or share a meal with.  But that is a really, really, bad test for POTUS.   We need a strong leader who makes smart decisions and he is doing that.  I don't give a ***** what he thinks or twitters about a dead Senator. That has absolutely no bearing on my life or anyone else's.

And now compare him to the wack-job alternatives.  Warren and her 'reparations' nonsense?  Harris, looking to build on Obama's race war strategy for her own benefit?   All of them with this 'original sin' concept for white people (is all that privilege making your life cushy these days John?), and this whole undercurrent of 'socialism good, capitalism bad' while we sit here at place of peace and prosperity that is light years beyond what has been achieved anywhere else in the world, ever, is just insanity at a level that is hard to comprehend.

I assume you've been to Mario's?  I know the chef-owner (and his brothers) very well.

I don't have any family left there as my siblings have all moved elsewhere (one sister is in San Diego though).

Tulsi also stepped down because of the DNC's bias against Sanders.  She has integrity that is found in many politicians these days.

How do yall pay for it BigMcD?

Part of the 3.2 could come from stop paying for things like Medicare, Medicaid, VA and roll it all into Comprehensive Insurance for all.  Presently the government pays for 60% of all health care now.  I probably wouldn't like it because I go to VA and get excellent care.

Would be great for small bidness if they didn't have to pay ridiculous premiums for their employees.

You pay for it one way or the other.

I'd need to understand the numbers better, but I actually could be convinced to get on board with Medicare for all because the current system of having it go through employers is completely ***** and taxpayers end up footing the bill for millions of exceptions anyway.

If you looked at the total dollars employers pay for employee medical benefits (I couldn't find that number in 30 seconds of looking), I bet you could get most of the way to your $3.2B.

T. Not B.

You'd be doubling the federal budget with one program. That WILL require a massive tax increase. Not only that, there will still be individual premiums. Ask anyone on Medicare.
