I wouldn't be opposed to signing James because he'd improve the team. I would be opposed to a large investment. The Steelers went out and got McDonald for a reason. He'd be better than anyone we have, but it wouldn't be the kind of upgrade I'm looking for at tight end. I'd prefer to sign a guy like Maxx Williams and make a major investment at the position in the draft assuming James wants, say, 4 years/6 mil.

This salary is completely unrealistic

This fills a need and he's not a bad starter, forget the stopgap he would be our TE1

I’d be fine with that. TE is overvalued, it’s a complimentary piece in today’s game. You can run rub routes and check down to slot WRs all day long if that’s what you like doing.

Perfect guy to pair with a draft pick

Can he block? Because if you think Croom is gonna be on the squad in 2019, we're gonna need a TE that can block. My assumption is that we'll invest a day one or two pick and his primary duty will be as a receiver.

I don't see James as an improvement over Croom or Thomas.

He might give the Bills more production than Thomas.  He's a big boy, but not especially athletic.   He might be a better blocker than Thomas.  I don't think the Bills would expect him to be a starter, but he'll give them something as a depth player.  I think Croom would start ahead of him.

I’m going to go ahead and assume he meant 6 mill/year for 4 years

I mean I hope so. That has him making less then a 2nd round rookie was making last year. I'd be happy if we get him for <6M. I like him, but the production isn't there to justify paying him at higher than middle of the pack for his position.

Would love to see them sign James AND draft a young TE.

James/Draftee/Croom is a nice lineup at that position.

James is the dependable all-around guy, Croom is the flex receiving option, and draftee is the future at the position.

I'd be fine with the Bills drafting two tight ends, but with as many needs as they have, I'm not sure it's reasonable. Furthermore, I get the sense they want a dependable veteran at the position, particularly since TEs historically take a few years to really start producing at a high level in the NFL.

James fits the profile of who the Bills should be looking at in free agency: Young players signing their second contracts in the NFL. No third-contract players, unless they come cheap.

Who the hell is Tony Pauline?  Isn’t he that guy with no credibility that people were complaining about last year?

Not that I’m aware of. He’s a draft analyst for SI.com.
