transplantbillsfan
Joe B: 7 observations from 2018 Buffalo Bills training camp - Day 6 1) Sack frenzy in team drills ...I've noticed a tendency -- especially with A.J. McCarron -- for the quarterbacks to hold on to the ball too long in the pocket. While it's good that they're trying to see if something opens up down the field, it's also not so good because it means their internal clock is not where it needs to be to release the ball before the play is dead. 2) The context behind the QB stats- Following the practice with all the team drills, I tallied up all of the quarterback "statistics." In all of the extended work during 11-on-11s, the statistical results were unkind to the eye test. A.J. McCarron, by my count, completed 13-of-20 passes, had one interception, was sacked five times and had his pass dropped by the receiver three times. For Nathan Peterman, he went 13-of-19, took three sacks, and had one pass dropped by an intended target. As for rookie Josh Allen, he completed just 9-of-20 passes, was also sacked three times, and had three of his catchable passes dropped... With Allen, his 9-of-20 does not pass the eye test, but he threw the prettiest two passes of the day -- both hitting his target correctly in stride for a significant gain. Allen was pushing the ball down the field farther than either McCarron or Peterman, which could also influence the statistics a bit. There were a total of six dropped passes, and those were by Charles Clay (twice), Robert Foster, Taiwan Jones, Ray-Ray McCloud, and Malachi Dupre -- all of which should have been caught without more difficulty than a usual catch in the NFL. 3) A whimpering two-minute drill- To throw one more thing at the team, head coach Sean McDermott decided to end the practice with one set of a two-minute drill for all three units. It went quite poorly for the offense outside of two plays... As for Allen, he salvaged the two-minute drill on his first play with an incredible throw down the left sideline to Cam Phillips that hit a tight window between two defenders -- a total zone-busting throw, and it went for 26 yards. Allen's next two plays were both throwaways when he saw he didn't have anyone, but on 3rd-and-10, he had Ray-Ray McCloud on a slant pattern that he made in stride, but the rookie dropped it over the middle of the field. The field goal unit came out, and Stephen Hauschka nailed a 52-yard field goal. If it weren't for that one play by Allen, the two-minute drill would have been a complete failure by the offense. IgotBILLStopay
The more I see and read, the more convinced I have become that Allen will be the day 1 starter. Peterman and McCarron appear to be playing not to lose.
Kirby Jackson
As of today I would say that the opening day starter looks like this: - McCarron 65% - Allen 30% - Peterman 5% This can all certainly change but is how I see it as of today.

I'll be fine with McCarron starting, so long as it's not Picked-off-again Peterman. I agree Nate's chance of starting is less than 10%. Maybe I'm a little swayed to Allen at 50% and McCarron between 40-45%, but I really think the fact that McCarron hasn't truly separated himself from the other 2 with his play--yes, I realize McCarron got his 2nd straight day of 1st team reps today, but I just think everyone knows he's the guy who starts preseason game #1, so they're getting him ready. But Beane already said Allen's chances of playing in 2018 will largely hinge on what he does for that 1st preseason game. So, that game next week is yuuuuuuuge!!!! ColoradoBills
If AJM starts the season and Allen is the #2 I see no reason to keep Peterman on the 53 roster. He will more than likely clear waivers and can run the PS.

transplantbillsfan
I think at this point there's a strong, non-homer argument to be made that Allen has a greater percentage chance of winning the starting QB job just based on 3 things: 1) Talent 2) Performance in a Bills uniform in 2018 3) Work Ethic 4) Talent 5) Teammate observation and Influence 6) Talent 7) Allocated money among our QBs

transplantbillsfan
Joe B: 7 observations from 2018 Buffalo Bills training camp - Day 10 2) Peterman, Allen with a bounce-back practice- On Sunday, the performance of all three quarterbacks was less than spectacular. That day was one of the less impressive days of the group through training camp. However, on Monday, Nathan Peterman and rookie Josh Allen both had one of the better practices of camp thus far. Peterman started off the day completing each of his first seven passes, and they weren't just little dump downs and throws behind the line of scrimmage. Peterman was pushing the ball down the field and giving his targets a chance to make a play where the coverage was a bit tight. He ended the day 8-of-10, but this was as close to the version of Peterman that we saw during the spring. As for Allen, his stat line of 4-for-8 surely doesn't stand out, but it does when you provide the context of it. Two of his incompletions were blatant drops -- one that hit Travaris Cadet in the hands on a perfect deep pass that split the cornerback and safety in zone coverage, and another by Rod Streater that got both hands on it along the left sideline -- and another was a great throw over the middle that cornerback Breon Borders made a great play on to break up. Allen also had the lone touchdown of the day, a fastball that he somehow fed into the gut of Ray-Ray McCloud over the middle of the field while a defender was all over him. Of his 10 practices, this one was right up there as one of his most accurate.
transplantbillsfan
So... has the board suddenly shifted to this? I'll say this. All our QBs looked pretty darn good tonight, and that makes me happy. If Peterman's TC and preseason isn't a fluke (like last year), then I feel good even with him starting, primarily because I think our OL is much better than most thought it would be, just as I suspected. Which begs the question of whether it's really a good idea to let our Franchise QB get killed behind the terrible scrubs at OL out there in the 2nd half. Good thing Allen is big and athletic otherwise I think he's already on IR.

Peterman has a 5% chance, if that. Allen is obviously the choice of this regime long term. Beane has questioned publicly the media perception of Allen as "raw." Dabol said he has a plan for him and was said to be on him like white on rice all rookie minicamp. It just feels inevitable that the most talented QB who's already the Apple of McBeane's Eyes will win the starting job against one scrub with a noodle arm and one QB with some potential, 4 years on the bench and a handful of quality NFL starts, but also a guy who made it through the 1st wave of Free Agency before Beane finally settling on him. The physical ability is there. The smarts are there. The experience under center is there. The work ethic is there. #17 under center on Sunday, September 9th in Baltimore... what say you? Man... I think that was a pretty good call by me Does anyone seriously think Allen isn't the frontrunner after tonight?

His first 2 drives he looked absolutely lost the entire time--all 6 plays since it was 2 straight 3 & outs. 1st pass shoulda been yet another pick. Next play sacked. 3 & out Next pass was simply a badly inaccurate pass. Next play he tries passing the ball 2 yards past the LOS as he's running towards the sidelines. Next play he believes he's some uber athletic QB and ends up scrambling on a 3rd and 13. That's how he started. LSHMEAB
I don't think this is really a question anymore. Josh Allen showed glimpses of greatness last night. I'm sold on the possibility that I may have been wrong. I think that arm is a perfect fit for a team with a pedestrian WR core. When you can get it to a guy that much quicker than the average QB, you throw a guy open. You tend to hear about throwing a guy open by leading. This is a bit different. The short pass he threw 100 MPH was a perfect demonstration of his serious shortcomings, but he flashes the ability to make up for it. The TD pass was special in that he demonstrated a rapid release combined with great velocity. Guys with huge windups wont last in this league. Seems to me it's something he's worked to improve. You can always bench him if the line doesn't hold up or things aren't working out. I don't buy the argument of "ruining" QB's. A guy with the mindset to play the most demanding position in all of sports cannot be soft. The sooner we know if we have the right guy, the better. Start the best players. He's the best quarterback on the roster. Peterman is a turnover machine waiting to happen. He does not possess the requisite arm strength to play the position. He's Mike Cawley. A practice squad quarterback who occasionally looks good in a vanilla, preseason setting. I really can't believe anyone views him as a legitimate option.
