Manziel: Browns Didn't Do Their Homework to Understand I Didn't Know X's and O's of Football

I would compare this to the Bills’ development of EJ.  Personally, I think it was an absolute joke and the ruined any chance of him developing.  But the difference is EJ was at least hard working and wanted to succeed.

Johnny destroyed his own development.  He is just another entitled rich kid who finds ways to blame others.  I could be wrong but I think he is using the partying as a reason why he didn’t succeed.  He just isn’t good enough and the Browns wasted a pick on him.

I agree they could've done a better job in developing him (Hackett serving as OC and QB coach his rookie year was not ideal), but the real problem was he was a huge reach in a really weak draft class.  He'll be a nice career backup though because of his work ethic.

Wow...I...haven't heard an excuse like this since a certain Bills' backup justified his poor play by saying the reason he sucked was that he didn't study the playbook since he wasn't expecting to play.  Not saying Manziel is wrong, but he's wrong to say it.  I always tell my kids when you make a mistake you need to do three things, admit the mistake, apologize for it, and do what you can to make it right.  This...is not taking responsibility.  Yes, at the end he said it was all his fault, but his earlier words say otherwise.  I wonder what reaction he expected to get.  Sympathy?  People thinking, "Really wasn't going to give him a chance, but he's right...it was Cleveland's fault for not realizing he was...well...Manziel.  In light of that, sign him up!  If he still sucks, it will be our fault for not realizing he still sucks."

Just...true or not...you don't *say* things like that. >.<

Why would he say this?  He supposedly has desire to get back to the NFL and now he throws the organization he played for under the bus.

They've been under the bus for quite awhile now. And for good reason.

Dear Johnny,

Remember that time you got drafted by the Browns and couldn't cut it.

Remember that time you skipped the CFL contract and went to a few pro days.

Remember that time you vented to the media and your still not in the NFL. It's not just the Browns. No team picked you up. Not then and apparently not right now and most likely never.

Sincerely,

Reality

No. He didn’t do anything but state the obvious and in doing so, unnecessarily demeaned two fine universities and two fellow athletes. Plus, he didn’t offer any constructive solutions.

If you want to fawn over him, be my guest. I’m not buying it.

So AL.com must not be credible I guess.  Because you’ve heavily criticized Rosen for his comments and AL.com thanks him.

The Browns did do their homework. The entire scouting staff was against drafting him.  They even paid a consulting firm to tell them which QB to draft. It was Bridgwater. The worst team owner in North American sports pulled the trigger. Will this time be different?

The reality is that Dorsey was fired less than a year ago, and GB had no interest in Highsmith or Wolf (despite legacy) as a GM.

Now does that mean they are bad? No, but it does mean people are projecting the hell out of their tendencies, values, and capabilities.

im part of the anti-sashi crowd too but they’ve had “football guys” in the room before. Dorsey isn’t some revelation to the organization. Joe Banner, mike Lombardi, mike Holmgren, Phil Savage, Ray Farmer, former Eagles GM & Reid “GM” Tom Heckert. We’ll see.

Did you expect a guy with 25 years of baggage to sober up and not be a bit clumsy at times?

ignoring the finer points of HIM as we don’t actually know any of them.... you can’t expect immediate perfection out of guys like this.

I expect him to own his failures if he’s ever going to succeed

he can be clumbsy but hes not taking accountability

Man this guy hasn't changed a bit. Still making excuses and blaming others. I mean seriously....Isn't one of the first steps coming to terms with the fact that you have a problem and you have to fix it, taking responsibility for your actions?

Loser.

I'm wondering how the people here  that wanted Johnny Football in Buffalo feel now ....

I'm curious to see if they would come out and admit it :)

I think acknowledging he didn’t know the game, didn’t study the game and left himself completely unprepared is quite a bit of that. Noting that the team somehow missed that and didn’t do much to fix it is also (as far as we know) part of the story. Not a perfect quote or something you are dreaming to see but in the context of where he may be it isn’t that unreasonable

i was one of his harshest critics, but would tap the breaks before blowing this out of proportion

Not blowing anything out of proportion- I just recognize ownership patterns or lack there of.

He should be praising Cleveland for giving him a shot he didn’t deserve and that he completely squandered.

What do you want to hear from him? “I suck and should probably sell cars” isn’t a reasonable expectation

Overall, I think he’s done a good job.  Personally, I know a bunch of guys like this.  Rich, entitled kids who screw up and then realize they ruined their lives.  They try to take accountability and say the right things but deep down, they are the same entitled person they always were.

I think Manziel misses being Johnny Football.  He misses being famous.  He realizes his life is just going to be another regular guy who played college football.  I don’t really but what he’s saying but I hope he is making real life changes.  And if he had Aaron Rodgers’ ability, I’d buy it more.

Not surprising...Haslam basically forced them to draft him against the personnel departments wishes

Or EJ just wasnt any good which is the more likely scenario

EJ is still collecting nfl paychecks though.

Yeah, the Hackett thing was a joke and EJ probably wasn’t good enough.  But he had a better rookie year than Jared Goff.  But you really need a plan in place for a rookie qb. Andrew Luck has Bruce Arians as his OC.

Honestly, the Bills’ offensive staff doesn’t really wow me but at least it seems things are fairly stable in the organization.

The article says that we should thank him for sparking a debate. The problem is there isn't much interest in a debate. And if you dig deep until what he is really saying, consciously or unconsciously, the debate will be pretty inflammatory.

Right but when it won you a heisman and got you picked in the first do you think you have to change?

The browns shouldve known who he was and planned accordingly. Similarly - if considering him now you need to expect a learning curve on and off the field. You have to build a support system.... but if paying 180m to a roster what’s a couple bucks for some specialists to devise customized plans for guys

It is always been MY opinion that teams should have full time staffs to be there for players - accountants, financial advisers, psych doctors, therapists, laywers, post NFL career counselors,  etc.  I am sure the NFLPA would interfere but a team could show its players it is there for them all of time and want to improve the players both on and off the field.  They could not make it mandatory but it could weigh in on when to resign players.
