LA Rams Strategy Begs Question: Are Draft Picks overvalued?

Recommended Posts

"All of these old and/or expensive players can’t be replaced easily in the draft because the Rams have traded away so many picks: They sent their first-round pick to New England for Cooks, their second-round pick to Buffalo for Sammy Watkins, their fourth-round pick this year and second-round pick next year to Kansas City for Peters, their fifth-round pick to Denver for Talib and their seventh-round pick to Washington for Derek Carrier. The Rams have added some draft picks in trades as well, but those are late in the draft: The Rams’ first draft pick is 87th overall, and that’s their only pick in the Top 130."

Has the expanding cap space increased the value of a draft pick, or decreased it? Given the fixed cost of draft picks and the increasing costs of signing veterans it doesn't seem there can be another way to see this. The value of draft picks must be going up.

What does this say about the Rams strategy over the last several years? For those that remember, isn't it familiar to see a former George Allen team seem to turn it's back on rookie talent?

It's a one year strategy so far and it's hard to say how it will play out.

It will work in the Shirley term but as soon as Goffs cookie deal is done and coupled w Donald's deal is done they will be tight money and not any cheap talent to plug in the holes where they have to let go of some veteran players due money. I think they have their window but is open shorter than it could be. Just my opinion

Notice they didn't have any luck in the Quarterback department until they drafted one?   The bigger question is if draft picks outside of Quarterbacks are overrated?

Just now, Pete said:

slightly OT- would you rather have Jared Goff or Aaron Donald?

Myself, Aaron Donald all day.  He is one of best players in the NFL

Goff. He is projecting to be a top 10 QB in the league. That beats a DE any day of the week.

The Rams are pushing all their chips to the middle for this year. If you truly believe that you have an excellent chance at a championship then go for it. But draft picks are essential for building your team at a discounted rate so you can get to the point of going all-in. A couple of years and they will be back on the treadmill once again.

a QB takes you to the Super Bowl.  A DT doesn't.  And AD is great too

Would you rather have Tre White or Deshaun Watson?

I've thought draft picks were overvalued for a while - ever since (at least) we traded away Marshawn for next to nothing (a 4th and a conditional/5th).

It almost seems like arrogance on the part of GMs - as if they believe they can translate a mid round pick into a Pro Bowler/Hall of Famer.  Usually they can't.

The price to move up in the draft is insane.  It's cheaper actually to get a veteran who's already proven himself.

YES!

I've been a draftnik since the 80's but first round picks are the most over-rated method of acquiring talent............and if you can get a good NFL player in exchange for a 3rd round pick you will win that trade most of the time.

First round picks should be used to take chances on QB........OR to take shots at filling other high dollar positions like Pass Rusher/LT/WR1/CB1.

They have their QB on his rookie deal. Their strategy will change when he’s making top 5 money.

The way I see it, the Rams were screwed in a couple years anyways when they'll likely be paying Gurley, Goff, and Donald roughly $70 million per year, so they might as well push their chips in for these next couple of years and hope that it's worth the pain and suffering that will come in the future.
