Bills do a poor job of keeping draft picks on their roster.

"It’s also the continuation of a bad trend for the Bills, who have been shedding their draft picks from the last few seasons at an alarming rate. Of the 46 players the Bills drafted from 2011 to 2016, only 16 remain on the team after Kouandjio’s release. Their draft pick retention rate over that time of 34.8% is dead last in the NFL, well behind runner-up Indianapolis and their 37.2% rate."

This has to change.

When you have 3 head coaches in a 4 year run-- draft picks get wasted.

Late picks are often very scheme specific guys that don't transition well and we've been a mixed bag on the top of the draft guys that should be around more often than not.

Correct.

Drafting for a different defensive scheme every year will result in high turnover.

This is also true. Late round guys are much more scheme fits so the constant switching definitely plays a part.

McDermott/Beane are a firm believer in building through the draft. I can see this stat improving over the course of the next few years. However, does the above article include lost players like Kiko (who we traded away), A. Williams (career ending injury), Gilmore (lost because we can't afford him)?

probably the main reason Whaley is no longer the Bills GM and rightfully so. however much of the blame must go to the (now departed) scouting staff. I can't blame coaching for not developing them properly because these players are not contributing much on other teams either.

It will. Better GM in place now.

We heard this when Buddy took over too. And then Whaley was supposed to be the prodigy waiting in the wings.

The bottom line is that the reason their draft pick retention is so poor is because they DRAFT FOR NEED.

That is the best way to get the lowest possible returns over the course of an extended period.

The bad news is that this past draft may have been the most blatant DRAFT FOR NEED draft the Bills have ever exectuted.........complete with low ceiling prospects and traded picks to move up.

I'm a big Tre White fan and sure this draft COULD defy the formula and pan out........but because they adhered to the formula for failure it wouldn't be a surprise if this was one of those near washout drafts we look back on too.

Trading nearly out of round 1, trading up repeatedly to address needs and only ending up with 6 picks in a strong draft.......not a good look for McDermott.

Time will tell.......but they followed the formula that got Whaley fired. Perhaps even more extremely than DW did.
