what is the situation with this...can he not kick off, is he not good at kick offs, or are/were they trying to keep him fresh for FGs or something? I forget.

i think it was a little of both, but mostly the former. he wasn't putting it through the endzone like Gay could, mostly not even reaching the endzone. plus he has had hamstring problems for a long time so they were resting him for FG's for the past 2 seasons

In response to #2, when you fair catch THREE punts inside the opponents 10 yard line and can't judge the way the ball is coming at you and realize that all 3 would have gone through the back of the end zone, you don't deserve to keep that job. Cost them at least 10-12 yards of field position each time.

Common man! That is nitpicky stuff, and those balls could have easily rolled right down to the 1 too.

As a return guy, Thigpen is really special. People seem to forget how electric he was in the limited time he was with us last year-- reminded me of a young Terrance McGee.

I am not flipping out over this move, but a tad disappointed.

Does Cundiff have a good leg?

No. Career, he's 8 for 30 from 50+. 52 of 71 in the 40-49 yard range. Reading between the lines, I think Carpenter must be hurting. Cundiff is basically going to be here for short FG's and extra points. To a degree this makes sense. Our special teams coverage has been pretty solid on KO and punts, so they're not going to keep 3 kickers on the roster. If the Bills were simply concerned with Carpenter's accuracy (assumes no injury), I think they would have released him outright.

In regards to Denarius Moore, this gives me some concerns about Sammy. With Goodwin out as well, they really don't have a legitimate "stretch the field" type of guy. Thigpen has been a solid steaming pile, so letting him go doesn't hurt my feelings. The only reason the team signs a speedster though is if they think they need one and don't have one. Do we hear about an MRI on Sammy's hammy this week? Stay tuned.

He wasn't doing anything special on PRs thus far this season and I'll bet they weren't happy with his judgment with regard to FC of punts inside the 10 yard line.

It could just be they want a kickoff specialist that can kick field goals if needed and actually gets touchbacks. Cundiff has never had an issue with distance.... I think he was regularly getting touchbacks even before they moved to the 35. Edited by over 20 years of fanhood

You can't fair catch punts inside the 10. If it rolls to the 1 then so be it.

I was hoping for the return of Dustin Hopkins but someone else got him first. I think Sturgis was out there at some point. Young kickers with big legs.

missed 3 kicks for Eagles Sunday

How much does anyone wanna bet that we draft a kicker this offseason?

CBF

I'll bet you a little

I believe that standard is a bit dated (not the philosophy though)...with punters seemingly having greater precision than ever these days, there's wiggle room there.

I'm willing to accept a fair catch at the 7 or 8 yard-line if it looks like the coverage team has a bead on the ball.

It's perhaps the simplest g*** damn rule in sports, and amazing how so many punt returners choose to ignore it.

Plant your facking feet at the 10. If you can't catch it, let it go.

@ChrisBrownBills

The #Bills sign K Cundiff & WR Denarius Moore. Release K Gay & PR Thigpen. More at http://Buffalobills.com

So, some were saying Thigpen should be coached to not fair-catch balls on or inside the 10 yd line. Looks like maybe the coaches felt they coached him plenty and the coaching didn't take.

Moore was a pretty fast dude coming into the league. Does he return?

I can't find kickoff statistics on Cundiff. As a fieldgoal kicker he has, like....one, maybe two, good years out of many? Maybe the Bills feel he can kick-off as well as Gay but gives them an option if Carpenter doesn't get his sh** together. I agree that Conner Barth seems the better choice, but maybe he preferred to go to Tampa, and maybe he seems the better choice because he spent most of his career there?
