Decided that I'm going to surprise my son by bringing him to this show:

http://www.songkick.com/concerts/28789909-whitechapel-at-irving-plaza

You can't beat the price and it's an excuse to do an overnighter in the city. I think I'm gonna spring for the VIP seats so we can be away from the pit.

Whitechapel and Cattle are very heavy, Goatwhore is super Satanic, don't know the other two.

Goatwhore was founded by Sammy Duet, former member of Acid Bath. My son was introduced to Acid Bath by a friend (I'd never heard of them) and their early stuff, in my opinion, was actually very good.

He has a couple White Chapel albums, but he loves Sammy Duet, which is what made me decide to take him.

Should be an experience.

Found this old School Doom band called Trouble from 79, sounds like the slow parts of Black Sabbath and early 80s metal, really good stuff wish I knew about them back then and they are still around.

Love Trouble - Eric Wagner has vocals like no other. Bastards Will Pay and At the End of My Daze are 2 of my favorites from back in the day.

Never heard of them until last month. No internet back then so a lot of bands went under the radar.

Yeah - I know what you mean - I can look back at some stuff I didn't get into much back then but really love now and wonder how I could have such a hole in my knowledge - Down was like that for me - never listened to them much and now I play their old stuff all the time and wonder why I wasn't into them back then.

We just didn't have access back then, these young whippersnappers don't know how lucky they have it!! (where's my old man emogi lol)

Down is good just listened to them the other day. Ever heard of Crowbar, they are one of the original Sludge Metal bands? Their Singer is also in Down.

Yep - Crowbar is another band I really like but sort of passed me by back in the day but I now listen to their old and new stuff. Kirk just left Down to focus on Crowbar. Good heavy NOLA sludge...

Any suggestion- recomendation of progressive metal

TesseracT is one of my favorite prog metal bands. This is older, but they've got a lot of cool stuff.

Hard to believe this song is 26 years old. Still awesome.

Bodies (Zeppelin's How Many More Times) had to be the most blatant ripoff on that album.

havent' heard it, never really got into Zeppelin, they were a great band but not heavy enough for me.

you mean bodies from Drowning Pool ?

I just listened to how many more times and it is nothing like Drowning Pool's.

No, Bodies off of Danzig III:

vs Zeppelin's How Many More Times:

Of course, Zeppelin probably ripped it off from somebody else first.

Slayer, hands down. I'm a big classic thrash guy - never really got into the death metal/cookie monster vocal stuff - not real impressed with that. Give me Slayer, Anthrax. Megadeth, Exodus, Pantera, Testament, Overkill, Metallica, Kreator, COC any day, but even in that group Slayer reigns supreme.

Agree that Slayer is king. I've seen them a ton of times, but my favorite was the Big 4 at Yankee Stadium. The order was Anthrax, Megadeth, Slayer, the Metallica. Slayer played (probably) the best set I've ever heard from them & totally blew the other 3 off the stage. The funny part was that scores of casual fans came late to catch Metallica and were just making their way to their seats as Slayer was wrapping up. They may never know what they missed.

There's a lot of stuff in here that I'm not familiar with.....I grew up in the early 80's, so I'm stuck in the Maiden, Priest, Sabbath, Ozzy + Dio Solo also ( I'm old I know...).....I do like Metallica and Megadeth a lot but for the most part, the rest is heavier than what I like.....I have a hard time enjoying death , speed or thrash Metal....there's some good riffs and hooks, but if I can't clearly here the lyrics, it doesn't work for me.

I enjoy my metal with some melodies which explains why I love Iron Maiden...the 3 guitars attack since 2000 is awesome. The newer Judas Priest is much heavier than it was in the 80's but it still kicks ass !

I like everything from rock to metal but Death will always be my favorite.

I always tell my wife when I retire I'm going to form Great Grampa's Death Metal Band. she laughs and says I will have to get a sound proof studio.

This seems like the perfect thread to share this awful, awful song I discovered the other day. The guitar solo at 1:15 made me LOL, and what happens at 2:25 clearly inspired Tenacious D. These guys out spinal tapped Spinal Tap, and I'm disappointed in myself for not having seen this before:

I saw these guys in 2007, and Dio's Lock Up The Wolves was my first concert ever. Truly one of the godfathers of metal.

TURN IT DOWN!

Ive got children sleeping in here! Dont you boys know any nice songs!?

When I was a kid we jammed in Dave's garage. His mother (she was Polish so we called her Madka) would come downstairs when we played in his cellar and yell "the dishes....they're rattling off the shelves." We'd look at each other and say damn straight Modka!! When this song came out it really hit home.

If you're looking for some millennial bands on the more melodic side, check out Ghost. They're opening for Maiden on the upcoming tour, so chances are you're already familiar. My favorite way to describe them is this: Imagine Alan Parsons becomes possessed, then joins Blue Oyster Cult to sing songs about Satan full-time. I like it.

I prefer their earlier, heavier stuff, but Opeth's last few albums have been on the lighter side, with more singing and next to no growling. Check out the albums Heritage & Pale Communion.

Mastodon is another great band who have toned it down a bit over the last few albums (Crack the Skye, The Hunter, Once More 'Round The Sun). Also worth checking out.

We didn't have no dope or LSD but a couple of quarts of beer, would fix it so the intonation would not offend your ear....

c'mon man this is the METAL THREAD now I have to post this to cleanse that.

Metal or no - you never cleanse a thread of Zappa, you poser.
