Now that Mathis has been added to the active roster, I am excited to see how he develops.  He has a really high ceiling (former second round pick by the Commanders) but his development has been slowed by injuries. (calf)/meniscus)  He has been called up twice, and now appears to be signed to the 53.

In his last year at 'Bama (2021) Mathis had 53 tackles, 9 sacks and 12 TFL's and was named 2nd team all-SEC. This kid has a lot of upside.

Line him up next to Walker and we have twin mountains at DT

The Commanders had to make the tough calls because Mathis rarely won individual matchups at the heart of the trenches. More often than not, the 312-pounder was dominated, like on this rep against New York Giants second-year center John Michael Schmitz, highlighted by Nick Falato of SB Nation’s Big Blue View.

John Michael Schmitz adjusted well to the late shift and finished his block with authority on this 5-yard Singletary run.

Great timing to establish a leverage advantage as Phidarian Mathis attempted to work play-side.

Good aggressive finish by the second year center.

Defensive linemen who are this easy for one blocker to handle are the reason for poor run defense. The Commanders needed Mathis to shift the line of scrimmage backwards and occupy double teams, but it rarely happened

does not seem like we have a good answer here.

I like the shift to size inside.  If he can eat some double teams and muck up the middle I'm all for it.  TJ Sanders coming off IR will be a-lot of help.  Jones getting healthy really improves the room as well.

Only took 6 years to realize what every Bills fan had been saying the entire time. Add size to the DT spot

Added "Phi"darian for the "Phins" game??

We signed Jordan "Phi"llips from the "Phins" and now have him on the active roster for the game??

I see what they are doing...Beane playing chess while these other Mofo's playing Checkers.

And Mathis is a true Phidarian.

Piggybacking off this, I really wish we'd find the Aaron Kromer of DL Coaches and back a brinks truck up to his house.

Im not a doomer, but I do not believe we are good at developing young DL. We have some good players, but with the resources poured in we should be getting more.

For example: imagine if we poured all the DL draft picks into the OL instead? I feel like we'd have 2 full OL's, one in top 3, and full 2nd string group in the top 15 across the league.

Hyperbole a bit, but seriously I believe that. Obv no reason to do that, but damn we need a DL Kromer. Wish I knew who that is

I prefer the Bills experimenting with new players to the organization like Logue and Mathis versus bringing back the ol' boys from seasons past.

Casey Toohill and Kingsley Jonathan aren't going to do anything.

I agree in general.  Adding Mathis now and getting him PT brings him up to speed.  That said I understand adding Jonathan and Toohill to the PS.  Both guys know the system giving them an advantage if they have to be elevated later.

Yep, let's hope he remains healthy. We've gone through some pretty bad seasons with injuries, but this one in particular seems to be especially brutal.

Particularly at that position group.

This reminds me that Elijah Pitts, the former Packer running back and father of former Orchard Park HS star and Bills player Ronnie Pitts, went to a small school called Philander Smith College.

Apparently it took Lombardi a few months before he was certain that it was Elijah Pitts from Philander Smith College, and not Philander Smith from Elijah Pitts College.

It depends, I read some positive things about his play on Sunday but then Joe Marino said he didn’t stand out.   Joe also can’t pronounce his name and calls him “Phi” Mathis LOL

I mean it seems pretty straight forward to me...one of the easier names to pronounce phonetically.

Perhaps Marino should stop posting content and go work on "Hooked on Phonics" for a few days

Had Star and that was it for a while. Jordan Phillips and Daquan Jones are big bodies.  Not having Oliver hurts but also makes it harder to scheme runs against.  Off the bus the Bills Oline and Dline are something right now.  Slowly becoming ass kickers on both sides.

The stages of Oliver/Hoecht grief:

1. Denial

2. Anger

3. BARGAINING

4. Depression

5. Acceptance

Gonna have to accept that the defense is probably back to the week 1 to 6 levels without those guys. My only hope is that its because McD took over more of the playcalling and actually gave the defense a boost

Fair enough and very good post. However, if he stinks we are now holding you personally responsible. 😂

Phidarian is going to get a lot of snaps!  We need Joey rested.  Is DaQuan playing Sunday?  I heard on WGR TJ Sanders is getting close.  And Salomon has been lining up inside with some success.  He will be Hoecht light.  So help is coming Joey, we need you for the playoffs.
