Even diminished, last game when Poyer was in was the best that the safety position has looked all season. Astounding.

Really inexcusable IMO!

It’s inexcusable that the 170th pick in the draft isn’t ready to start in game 7 of his rookie season?  In all probability, his upside is career backup based solely on his draft slot.

That sort of ranking doesn’t apply in football. There are NOT 170 safeties in the draft.

The real reason you'd play Hancock with Bishop is it allows Bishop to shade more toward being the box safety and Hancock being the free safety. It's the more natural fit for each.

"There are NOT 170 safeties in the Draft"? What kind of goal post moving is that? That's not the point.

 

The point is a player taken at the Bottom of the 5th Round at Pick 170 is 9.9 times out of 10 not a starting quality prospect. Let alone expected to be a Starter in their Rookie year.

 

This would be like complaining that Javon Solomon wasn't made ready to start last season. Or that Justin Shorter should have been expected to save us at WR the year before.

 

You want to complain about us not addressing Safety more than we did this season? That's f

ine. But being upset that the 170th pick in the Draft, at best our 4th Safety on the Depth Chart (possibly below that), wasn't being prepared to start from the jump is ridiculous.

He covered for a lot of Hamlin’s poor angles/mistakes and was the last line of defense to tackle ball carriers before they scored. I’d agree, he had a pretty good year last year… for an average to below average starting safety. This year he just hasn’t been up to the task.

Some of the best players in league history have had plays like that when a top RB is at full speed. 

 

I'm still hopeful that Bishop will develop into a fine player but for me, it's not that Bishop failed to make the play... it's how miserably he failed. Robinson only has 10 lbs on Bishop. It shouldn't have been like a fly and a windshield.

Of course, the positive with Poyer is that he knows this defense and should help with positioning, etc.

That’s another problem with this coaching staff.  They make their offensive and defensive schemes so difficult that an acquired player can’t just come in and play.  Case in point was Amari Cooper last season.

 

Now, Rasual Douglas did come in and immediately play well but he may be an outlier.

Seems people already forgot last year. He was not kind of good last year. He was ranked 117 out of 170 safeties. Worse than a lot of teams backups
