Stupid that the fans can’t keep the balls that they catch. 

The NFL and the owners bring in so much money.  Let’s say 3 balls go into the stands each game (which may be on the high side), the NFL can’t afford $500 per game?  Give me a break.

The ball you buy off the shelf at Dick's or the Bills store, is not exactly the same as a game ball.

I think it is because, as someone mentioned earlier in the thread, the game balls are now chipped for the first down technology. The replacement balls would be run-of-the-mill Wilson NFL footballs.
