Nobody is getting open downfield against those shells, regardless of how fast they are.

Trying to squeeze throws into those non-existent windows is just wasting downs and begging  for interceptions.

I'm not too bent out of shape over this loss, with the expecation there will be a rebound.

However, let's not start Tre White (59/60 snaps last night) and Daquan Jones (44 out of 60) in ATL.  I'd rather see younger guys like Logue and Mathis take the bulk of snaps and have Jones rested and in on 3rd downs and plays that really matter.

At CB, White has zero quickness left, and Benford's quickness is limited.  Put your quickest CBs out there.  I don't think Stefon Diggs is that good.  I think some of it was due to Tre White being so slow.

Who told you Shavers was super fast?

Exactly. If the guys get open Josh will throw them the ball. Not saying he never fails to see one, all QBs do. But the primary reason he is checking down is guys not being open deep.

saw the burst last year for that TD but also thats the WGR hype too.

Changes for this week...I focused on the offense because that side of the ball has talent and the scheme can be fixed/changed. The defense is hopeless.  The only chance they have is to force turnovers and to score early and often to force the opponent out of the run game.

1. They should work almost exclusively out of the no huddle in the 12 personnel package with Coleman and Shakir at WR.  No defense in the league can match Kincaid.  He has become an adequate blocker. Both Knox and Kincaid can split out at WR.  Shakir can still be the slot with twin WRs to one side and double tight to the other side.  This base offense with Cook and Allen would be unstoppable.

2. I am not anti-run on first down, but they need a few more play action plays on first down

3. If they get 2nd and less than 3 take your deep shot then

4. Roll Allen out of the pocket more.  It will slow the opponent pass rush

5. A bit more off-tackle runs.  Cook looks like he is ready to break one of those soon.

6. Keep running from under center. maybe sneak in a couple pistol plays but no running out of shotgun except next item.

7. Trick play for the week - Thurman Thomas direct snap in shotgun.  Always loved this play and it would be a nice wrinkle to bring back

8. Get Johnson a bit more involved on third down.  He has struggled so far this season but he has been a reliable pass catcher in the past

9. Sit Ray Davis and dress two RBs.  Sit Shavers.  Dress Samuel, Moore(can be emergency RB3 if needed), and Codrington for KR.  Leave Shakir as the designated punt catcher.

10. On defense, they need to blitz more.  They can't get home rushing four and the coverage can not defend long enough for a coverage sack.  It's time to start putting more pressure on the QB with LB, CB, and S blitzes.  The Bills have had very few short fields to work with this season - maybe one?  This puts extra pressure on the offense to be perfect.  Blitzing might give up some yards but may also create a turnover. The reality is the defense sucks right now and is going to give up yardage no matter what.  McDermott needs to dust off the Jim Johnson DC playbook and start dialing up the heat.  If McD is true to his word and he actually want to learn and improve then he needs to adjust to the personnel he has.

11. Put Milano on IR

12. Start Shaq even if Williams is healthy

13. Trade a 7th for Rasul Douglas and cut White. The team needs a wake-up call and White is beyond awful.

sounds like we lost milano again for a while.

It would be great if someone in the secondary could make a play on a ball.  Erik Turner just said on his podcast with sal that the bills have the lowest pass breakups in the league.  They have only 2 for the year.  A league Low.

Defense is going to make this team have to score in the 30's going forward.  Such a bummer.

The secondary is terrible.  (Even Benford looks lost out there.)

No one is contesting any throws.  Our corners have not come close to making an interception.

Beane has put together a roster thet is nowhere near chsmpionshipnlevel.

We seriously could be 1-4 or 2-3 right now.

We have a great all time QB.  A very good RB and a strong O line.  Good TE’s.  But our WR’s are bottom 5 in the league collectively.  And the defense has no stars or guys who are even very good.  I would argue that Shaq Thompson has the most talent on this defense.  And the secondary is bottom 5 also.

The coaching is not smart enough, creative enough, and too arrogant to tweak or redesign their schemes.

This is the 9th year of McBeane.  It has grown stale, and relies all on #17.  But has shackled him for whatever reason.

Some new blood in the organization on the management and coaching side (someone from the outside) would do wonders in giving some much needed new perspective.

I think the league has passed McDermott and Beane by over the past few years.

It isn't about being fast so much is it is about route running and nuance. The stats show teams are having success going deep even against shell coverage. That is because they have guys who can find the holes and get open. We don't.

Great post Ethan.

I said last night.  White needs to go.  He could not cover college receivers at this point.

And Shaq is still good and plays hard w an edge.

Also what the fuuu happened to Oliver? I know this team never lets anything out but what a strange injury and he's missed 4 weeks but we didn't put him on IR?

Last i heard, someone stepped on his foot. Must've been stepped on by godzilla or something.

Me, I would like to see the team play with CONTROLED” anger, after the sub par performance in the previous game,

I want to see, a slightly higher ratio of down field passing, I want to see our speed guys with the ball in their hands,

I want to see Josh do his scramble run thing earlier in the game, to cause the opposing defense to have to worry more, about who is gonna run the ball between him and Cook, etc.  I could go on, but I’ll spare all y'all of my further ramblings, 😁🍸🚬

GO BILLS!!!

Did you watch the all 22 yet to confirm this?  I don’t like to comment on the separation unless I’ve watched the all-22.  The tv camera doesn’t tell the whole story.  My buddy said he saw guys open (didn’t specify if any were deep) while Josh was navigating in the pocket prematurely on several occasion, although I didn’t see it with my own eyes

I thought it was a swirl last night.  Nobody open.  And I think Josh was invited around a lot, too.  Hit his head hard a couple of times against the turf.  I get why he bailed.  He trusted things more on the run and outside the pocket.

We need more talent at WR, DL, and CB. Thats the bottom line.

Not expecting Hoecht and Oji, or Max after so much missed time, to be contributing much.  Maybe Max in playoffs.

Ed returning will certainly help, but only if he stays healthy...which is a big if.

Maybe we can make a trade deadline move at WR...that would help to bring in more speed/downfield threat...but how long have many asked for that and Beane is refusing to do so.

Changes with current coaching:

1.  Defense: Babich is overmatched imo.  I'd have Sean take back over, or possibly Nielsen getting more say to help Bobby

2. Offense: Brady has been "figured out".  Dorsey was figured out his 2nd full season too.  Some guys can adjust and adapt.  Again talent deficient at WR, but Brady has to change his style.  We've gone from Uber aggressive Dorsey to super conservative Brady.  There is a middle ground somewhere.  Also when Bills fans can predict plays 30%+, which I can easily do based on formation/personnel tendencies then you've become too predictable as a Coach

Go find a WR with speed at trade deadline, and Brady change his tendencies.  We didnt run the ball enough out of 11 personell last night either.  We've started to use Kincaid more downfield.  How about Palmer/Keon out of the slot, more middle of the field too?

This team, either coaches or Beane, have seriously screwed up the WR room and wasted cap in the process.

We've seen Keon enough to know hes better as a big slot, more dynamic there.

The key 🔑 issue at WR, is lack of an X...still?  Palmer isnt it.  Then we couple his contract with a return/gadget guy in Samuel and weve wasted >$10m cap.  Get a true X, actually 2...but thats next offseason.

Beane is on thin ice to me.  You cant live off the glory of drafting Josh Allen for this duration anymore, without improving his WR cast and lack of finding any true difference makers on defense

- Get some help for Bobby Babich, we have some athletes but they are not in good position and the in-game schemes are off on 3rd and medium+

- Change this season's offensive philosophy.  Stop playing such conservative football in the first half of games. When you have Josh Allen and deficiencies on the back end of your defense, building a nice lead with some up-tempo offence will get you the #1 seed.  These guys are holding back and running the offense like we have Joe Flacco at QB.  Check the film from the previous few seasons on how they rolled teams in the first half.

- Demote Ray Davis and promote the Gore Jr. kid.  If nothing else, to send a message for a week or two.  Gotta give James Cook fewer touches without losing massive amounts of productivity.

- May need to trade draft assets for a legit downfield threat, these outside WR's are not championship caliber guys.

-Babich I thought had a fairly decent game last night. Got some good pressure. Held them to 33% on third downs. Contained a mobile QB and stopped the run well.  Yeah, Diggs had a day...but when he's dialed in he's tough to stop.

- I agree. We need something new on offense. Limiting Allen's turnovers has been a welcome focus over the past couple years, but they need to push the ball down field sometimes too. Even if it does result in an arm punt now and then.

- Ray Davis is a concern. I have been wanting to see Gore for a game or two for weeks. There really is no purpose to having Davis active if he's getting 2 touches a game.

- In the same thought as activating Gore for Davis, I wouldn't mind seeing Kristian Wilkerson in place of someone (Samuel, Shavers) for a week or two. But yes, they really need to buck up and find a WR before the deadline. However, it may be like giving a blind man a Lamborghini. It may be nice but can Joe Brady actually use it or will it sit and do not much like other offensive weapons we acquired near deadlines like Cooper and Hines?
