What is going on with the punt protection and blocking on FG/XP attempts?

that’s two weeks in a row that a punt has nearly been blocked, and of course, the blocking breakdown on the Prater GW FG in Week 1.  Ferguson also committed two penalties today.

not a great start for Tabor

Ferguson got rocked a few weeks ago shoved end over end, head over ass, backward on a play. Since then he has been a little off. He got lit up a bunch. It makes me mad because he is a class act and really good

If the NFL were concerned about player safety, they might consider banning diving towards the punter like that.

those roughing plays on punters are just a recipe for a leg injury.

As a fan, I don’t want to see it. I don’t want my punter being taken out, and I don’t want my rush team risking a bad penalty by going for the rare block.

I thought this on the first viewing, went back and watched cause it was pretty gnarly, but I'm 90% sure it's actually a trainer who is holding a water bottle who reaches around him to help lift him, water bottle squirts, etc....

100% agree with this.  They ban lesser stuff like leverage on field goals but then the punter has to face a rush of 300lb linemen while he's standing on a single leg.  I don't understand why the punt hasn't faced the scrutiny that the kickoff has to be honest.

Looks like a serious possible ligament injury here .

I get that he’s a punter. But his ligaments should be no different than anyone else on the team. Muscles hypertrophy, ligaments do not. So, why is he so fragile.

Just a nasty hit here and bad luck for Johnston. Orthopedic docs will often want 24-72 hours from possible soft tissue/ligament injury for swelling to go down so they can get better quality MRI images for decision making. Definitely a decent chance he has some ligament damage he can't play through in there. And since we might not know for a few days it would make sense to work some punters out early in the week just in case.

They definitely need to bring people in. The injury was to his non-kicking leg, so stability is an issue. Not that the kicking leg would change things, but planting to get leverage for the kick is huge.

Seems to be an issue all around the NFL. Have never seen so many blocks so consistently in my life as I have to start the season...GB had another XP blocked tonight and Dalla returned it for their first 2 points of the game.

I’d imagine they’d bring back Robbins.

Doubtful. If they gave up on him after a week, he’s low on their list to return

I agree with this generally, but there is only so much you can do to protect players. It’s already illegal to rough the kicker, run into the kick, what is the NFL gonna do? A penalty for getting near the kicker? It’s part of the game. I’m not sure how much more they can do

Good point. It might be hard to fashion the rule. the cleanest way to do it is “you basically have to be upright” in blocking a punt— like in basketball defending position. Arms straight up.

it would kill blocked punts, but so what? Right now, on blocked punt attempts, it seems like odds are better that the team gets a penalty than a blocked punt.

Sounds like it’s time to bust out my orthopedic degree I’ve earned reading ChatGPT.

Johnson’s main stabilizing ligament in the center of the knee, the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament), may be stretched or torn.

Other ligaments like the PCL, MCL, or LCL may also be injured, depending on the direction and force of the injury.

Johnson might also have injury to the meniscus (the cartilage that cushions the joint) or the smooth cartilage lining the bones.

In more serious cases, the joint capsule or blood vessels behind the knee could be affected.  In short, this could be catastrophic or he could be ok. I’m not taking any questions, sorry.
