Yes, the Jets are rivals.   The Jets and the Pats* have been our rivals the longest, going back to 1960 and the original AFL.  The Dolphins joined the AFL in 1966.  The Jets usually play us tough no matter the records.

It is very odd that the Jets and Bills have very little overlap when both teams were good.  The Bills beat them the season that the Jets won the Super Bowl i(968), the Bills only win of the season.

Life Time Records with our Division Rivals:

Vs Jets:   Bills won 71 and lost 58 with only 1 playoff game included (Bills won that one on the road in the Knox era).

Vs Pats:   Bills won 51 and lost 71 with 1 tie.   The playoff record is 1-1.   The Brady era was completely lopsided in Pats* favor.

Vs. Dolphins:   Bills won 60 and lost 62 with 1 tie.   Playoff record is 4-1 in the Bills favor.  The Bills have nullified the 0 for 20 record in the 1970's versus Miami.

I hate everything about Jersey. Honestly their fans are the worst . Right up there with the cowgirls as worst fan base

Is it just the Channel Islands you hate or is it all British Crown Dependency?

By the way most NFL fans in northern and central New Jersey are Giants fans, southern New Jersey are more Eagles fans. The Jets fan base, because of there days at Shea Stadium, are located in New York. More explicitly Queens and Long Island.

Yes, but I will say… the fans have improved as their team has remained stagnant for so long. Only the die hards seem to be left and I respect that.

I’m sure the bandwagon obnoxious NJ and Long Island people will all be back if they ever become good again.

That’s a good point.  As of late I’ve found Jets fans to actually be pretty good football fans to talk too…. But yeah probably they are real fans of the team that are still sticking with them

During the Rex Ryan year, their Rex Ryan years to be clear, yes.  They were better than us, loud, and obnoxious.   Feels gross having to clarify which teams Rex Ryan era I am referring to.

Yeah only years I found the Jets real annoying were from 2010-mid 2012 (butt fumble).  I didn’t even mind their success so much as Rex’s whole persona then.

I've never truly considered the Jets a true rival in the same regard as I did the Dolphins in the old days, but I've always hated the Jets more than almost any other team. Part of it is the NY aspect where the players, fan base and media all hype them up far beyond is appropriate due to the market. They aren't now nor have they ever been the NY Yankees, but you wouldn't know it listening to their fans' sense of entitlement. We saw the media hype ramp up when Rodgers was a Jet, though it was proven to be completely unwarranted.

They were competitive and entertaining during the Rex Ryan years, but during my lifetime, they've almost exclusively been pretenders. The Jets haven't been to the Super Bowl since Joe Willie Namath, for crying out loud.

I lived in NYC for a number of years of years, also spent summers and then lived for a few years in the Hamptons. New Yorkers have a right to love that City, it is a microcosm of who we are. The Borough of Queens is the most diverse place on the planet. When I first moved to NYC a Cab driver asked me how long I’d been in New York, I told him a few months, he said “when you’ve lived here for six months you’re a New Yorker, welcome to The City, good luck.”  Today especially, fandom aside, let’s show some love and respect.

I always found people who actually live/lived in the city to generally be really nice.  It's the Long Islanders who tend to give New Yorkers a bad name.   Too many act like they're better than everyone else simply because they live near NYC ... especially when they decide to go to college Upstate.

Buffalo Bills lead series 71-58-0.

And in same State.

I'd call that a rivalry. The pendulum will swing again.

Oh boy are you gonna get it!

Back in the 60's, the Jets were a big rival it seemed so to me. But I was a kid then.

Me too.. and agree .. But it was more about beating Namath .. The teams from 68 on werent very good..

I never considered them a rival...

There were many years when both teams sucked.  Beating them during those years was nothing special.  Neither was losing to them.

When we were good and they were bad, they were just another team to beat up on.

Being both good at the same time is fuel for a rivalry.  But that hasn't happened much.

Ed Anzalone was a NYC Firefighter, his Harlem Unit was deployed to the World Trade Center 24 years ago today. That “D-bag”, as you so eloquently put it, ran into hell to rescue others. What he, other Firefighters and Police did that day, far outweighs any trophies or titles.

Oh ok. That justifies being a total jerk in public for the rest of his days.

He roots for his team, you know, like the guy that inexplicably covers himself in mustard and ketchup. Or a grown man that dresses up like Elvis. Personally I think all these antics and costumes are childish. It is all about “look at me!”, it’s fans trying to get on television. As far as Fireman Ed is concerned, costume aside, ha has been honored by the NFL for his heroism on 9/11. I find it disrespectful for you or anyone else to vilify him on the anniversary of that event.

I can't think of a time when both teams were good which is when a rivalry really functions. The Ravens and Steelers have been consistently competitive in the same division for a quarter of a century that's what makes that such an epic modern rivalry. During the Kelly Super Bowl era the Jets were pretty bad. I think in the early 80's might have been the only time both teams were semi-relevant.

The Jets had a solid run from 2000-2010. Of course you had the Rex Ryan back to back AFCCG run in 2009-2010 but even in the Herm Edwards era from 2000-2005 the Jets made the playoffs 3 out of 6 years and had 2 playoff wins plus a division title. Even the short lived Mangini era from 2006-2008 they had winning seasons 2 out of 3 years and made the playoffs in 2006. Then of course the early Rex Ryan era runs came after. In that time frame the Bills were in the drought and only had one year where they felt like a good team capable of making the playoffs in 2004. So when the Jets were a competitive maybe one notch above average NFL team in the 2000's the Bills were mostly mediocre.

Then from 2011-2016 both the Bills and Jets were extremely mediocre. The Rex Ryan era for the Jets from 2011-2014 was mired in mediocrity. The Bills drought was bottoming out in the Chan Gailey era and then trying a failed rebuild in the Marrone era. Then the Bills got Rex Ryan for mediocre results while the Jets had their own failed rebuild with Todd Bowles.

Then the Bills finally hit on the right rebuild in the McD era and the Jets are now deep into a playoff slump and mired in dysfunction. It only feels like a rivalry because the Bills play in the same division...

There is one, and only one, NFL football team in the state of New York.

I thought I did that kindly and gently, FWIW.  :)

When both of our boys turned 16 I took them to a Bills game in Buffalo as a rite of passage. I chose a Jets games both times hoping for a happy outcome, but we split those two contests. I have an 11 year old grandson who will be joining us at the Bills game in Atlanta this season. Word got back to me that he told people he thinks he gets to go to a game in Buffalo when he turns 16, and he’s already excited by the idea. He’s such a good boy!
