Now that the euphoria of the win has worn off, unless something drastic changes on defense this will be McDermott’s last year as Bills head coach.  The undersized Linebackers and complicated coverages that values DB’s who are in the right spot instead of guys who can play man… we’re never getting over the hump with a McDermott defense no matter how good Josh is. It’s a flawed system.

I'm guessing we'll improve on defense as the season goes along.

The Ravens defense, pictured in both graphs almost entirely hiding behind other team logos like COWARDS, were not much better last week, and were WORSE last year.

For those in the know - how much better do we get against the Ravens with Hoecht and Ogunjobi?

Also - assuming White and Maxwell are back (with potentially better coverage and holding on to the ball)?

Watched this video once and trying to catch everything.  Not sure if this guys is a Raven's fan or what but it's a good break down of their line mauling us.

That was a really good watch - thanks for posting.

One of the biggest things for me is to see those Henry runs, you think of his size and strength but it is almost breathtaking to see how quickly he just got to top gear blowing through the holes/lanes with zero hesitation- like he was just sprinting as if no one was there and no decision had to be made.  So impressive.

Did show how bad Milano and Bernard were on so many of those plays.  The one Rapp play where it looked he had an angle then a second later Henry was 5 yds past him was incredibly bad - and the guy said something like it was prob good for his career he played it so bad bc he would have likely been on an epic Henry stiff arm lowlight video 😛

Was funny too the guys frustration with the one OG - bitching and grinding his axe with his crusade even while analyzing Henry blowing through for 60 yd runs lol

This is the ultimate homer video.  It’s a video of Derrick Henry runs from a very frustrated Raven’s fan who’s trying to blame one Raven’s offensive lineman for the loss.

This diehard Raven fan‘s takes:

-They have one o-lineman keeping them from rushing the ball well enough to win big games.  (Never mind their rushing attack destroyed us almost the entire game!).

-Their defense gave the game away…he never mentioned Josh or any Bills offensive player once. He gave zero credit to Buffalo’s offense.

I just saved you 26 minutes, unless you want detailed video of every Bills defender not named Ed Oliver getting shoved around or flattened play after play.

Bernard and Milano both lost every battle with every blocker they saw. I'm pretty sure I saw Bernard's feet come off the ground as he was lifted up and moved by his blocker more than once.

Bernard is so overrated. I hate watching him play middle because he so easily pushed around in run defense and he doesn’t shed blocks. It’s laughable Beane gave him an extension.

It is early days.  No one played much in pre-season.  Lots of new young players.  Significant injuries and suspensions.  I suspect we will be seeing a much better defense as the year progresses.  Fortunately, the schedule is fairly soft early.  By November I think we will see a B+ defense.  And that's more than enough for Allen and company.

The hope would be Bishop evolves into a better starter, the defensive line can rotate even more with those two back which means a more rested unit that can be aggressive, and if the CB spot it healthy and good then you can really scheme things away from your weakness at safety.

Again that would be the hope.

These videos were hard to watch... Defensive front looked even worse on video than live.  Every play, every d-lineman just stood up.  No penetration.  And Milano and Bernard looked like little kids going up against their OL.  We're gonna be in trouble the rest of the way with this personnel and scheme.

It just gets frustrating watching this defense when so much money is tied up in a unit that is mediocre at best. The money and resources have not been well spent on that side of the ball.

If I'm Bean, I'm calling up other teams right now and do a "Hockey Trade". Give me a starting vet S or CB and I'll give you a starting player that you need. Hell, I'll even throw in a fourth rounder. I don't know, but this secondary looked like a college team out there. Salary Cap $, yeah yeah, I get it, but I would be looking to upgrade this Swiss cheese secondary D as soon as possible.

I think there will be a piece more likely added to this defense. Esp if Kincaid and Keon continue to show good development then the defense will get a piece added to it. Will that be at corner? I would say no, if Strong is decent and Tre and Max come back there's not really much I think they need there. At LB I think they aren't bad, I think the scheme and poor DT play put them in a bad spot. I think in a few weeks we will see the LB core is solid. Safety and DT is where I think there will be a move made. I also think the front office probably views Larry O and Hoecht as in season additions once they come back from suspension and both should provide a boost to the D-line.

Given that I have thought for many seasons that the team should trade for a DT that is a pure good run stuffer and they never make that trade I think safety is a solid move. If Rapp and or Bishop struggle I think they make their "Rasul Douglas" type move to add a quality starting caliber piece to the safety room and patch up the defense a little bit.

I don't think we are looking at major overhauls here. But I think there's gonna be a starting caliber piece added assuming there's a struggle at LB or S that lingers.

The D looked like this in preseason as well. The response was its just preseason. After week 1 many want to say its just because it was the Ravens. I fully expect beating up some week teams as usual. But come playoffs we have to be able to at least compete on defense and not rely on mistake free play from the offense.

Not worrying about the D until after the midpoint of the season, especially since the safeties are the lynchpin in this scheme and until Bishop gets up to speed with games under his belt we won't see the true effects...after the midpoint, I would expect the D to continue improving and hopefully finally peak during the playoffs for once.

Also a lot of new faces and rookies in there that need to get acclimated to the scheme and learn how they best fit in their roles within it.

But what's Baltimore's excuse with 7 first round picks and multiple All-Pro and pro bowlers on D that has largely remained the same from last year including an "All-World" secondary that got absolutely shredded by Allen giving up almost 400 yards passing and 500 total.

Bobby Babich is officially on the hot seat. Another game or two like that he is a goner.

Why do fans skip over the elephant in the room and go straight for mcd hand picked scape goats?! This is McDermotts scheme and it’s highly flawed

Because McD has said it is Babichs calls and unit in the end. Yes McD has a role in scheme etc.. but he has transitioned more into CEO coach like most do and Babich has the majority of the responsibility. I do not disagree that McD has a role and if things go south and Babich goes that McD will also get fire to him for it, but he isn't calling the plays on D at this point so Babich does get more fire.

Consider this; next to zero season preparation via preseason games, the first game of the season will generally have a bunch of ugly happening, as the starting lineup has only been doing the soft training camp prep, both teams defenses got torched for a combined eighty-one points, and these are the preseason number 1 & 2 favorites to win the superbowl,

there is a fair bit of jumping the shark going on by both fans and pundits.

I give the D a lot of credit for their performance in the 4th quarter. They were getting stomped all game, but made two huge stops and a fumble in crunch time. Typically, defense is at a disadvantage late in the game because they’re more gassed than the offense. They showed a lot of heart on Sunday. It wasn’t always pretty, but when it mattered most it was beautiful.
