Buffalo destroyed the Pats early one season, week one if I recall.  Brady threw four picks, including one Adams returned with all the glory and gracefulness of a bowling ball going down a flight of stairs.

...the Pats finished that season with a total of two losses and a Super Bowl ring.

It's one game.

The KC/Chargers game thread stipulated no Bills conversation, soooo. . .

Unlike Baltimore vs Bills, this was a divisional game for KC.  That instantly means KC's bid to reclaim their division throne involves a steeper climb than the Bills would face if they lose to the Ravens.  A Buffalo win would give Buffalo a huge boost in their quest for AFC dominance, but I understand that Buffalo's weakness at cornerback is at least partially temporary.  I can see why Buffalo could lose the game yet not have their   division title hopes be seriously affected.  I trust that the Bills' are being honest regarding Tre White's groin issues - being treated as temporary.  If he does miss the Baltimore game, (listed as doubtful) he should be back sooner rather than later.  I also expect to see Hairston by the middle of October, and I think he will be positive addition in the second half of the season.  CB may not be a strength for a while, but it's not going to be the glaring weakness it was in 2025 once we get a few games into the season, and it will continue to improve after that.  I don't think Buffalo has any other team in their division who is a serious threat to win the division title from Buffalo.

If the Chargers do knock off the Chiefs for the division title in the AFC West, it makes KC's path to the AFC championship and a playoff match versus Buffalo much more unlikely.  The biggest obstacle for Buffalo in the playoffs might be somebody new: Baltimore, Cincinnati  or LA Chargers are the best bets.

Your thoughts?

The Chiefs were winning the last couple of years out of muscle memory.  They got into close games and always pulled them out.  Their weaknesses have been growing and it might be they've caught up with them.  However, last night's game just showed that their injuries to their two best WRs really hurt.  ANY team that has multiple injuries at a single position will struggle (as the Bills might with the defensive backfield banged up).

The Chargers have a very good defense but not THAT good that they should expect to shut down the Chiefs every time out.  I think once they get WRs back they'll return to being a very tough out.

I’ve been fooled many times before by week one, all I’ll say is that it’s always good to see the Chiefs take the loss, week 1 or otherwise

It's just the first game and all, but it's hard to imagine a scenario where this loss won't matter down the road in some fashion re the playoffs.  And it also suggests the possibility that there's a new sheriff in town in the AFC West.  Time will tell but a promising start for anyone anti-Chiefs!

would it be more upsetting to lose to the chiefs again, or have the chiefs fall and the chargers win? I don’t know. I’m just tired of losing and know whoever we play in late January would be very good and that’s been a problem.

the teams coming out of the west all have something in common- coaches that got to the Super Bowl. Likewise, the ravens.

it’s a tough road and the chiefs falling doesn’t mean it’s much easier honestly,

week 1 divisional games can be wild. I wouldn’t bet on any of them.

I think what stood out to me in this one was it really wasn’t in stupid fashion…the chargers were just flat out better in pretty much every way.  It wasn’t like unlucky turnovers or stupid mistakes, in fact I think the chiefs were pretty lucky just to be in that game.  Chargers absolutely dominated and a couple blown coverages and a ridiculous fg resulting from a dumb clock management mistake made the final score closer than it actually looked

Chiefs have only lost like two other  turnover-free games in the entire mahomes era and the last time was vs the eventual afc champion bengals in 2021 who were significantly better than the 2025 chargers

id never say they’re done by any means but I think the importance of that game is getting downplayed quite a bit just based on previous years results which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

And the players didn't play particularly impressive either. Their defense missed ints thrown to them. They committed a lot of  penalties that were stupid and could have defeated them. The chargers offense would inexplicably get flat for a series and looked as if they didn't have a chance to move the ball.

That is what struck me.

It's always a good thing when KC loses, but 28 teams (including the Bills) have yet to play a down, so I just can't too worked up over this yet. And the Chargers may well turn out to be a really tough out as the season goes on.

We're used to thinking of the Chiefs as our nemesis for obvious reasons.

But maybe this year our main threat to earning an AFC crown is the Chargers.  Or the Ravens.  Or some other team.

I am remaining confident, but I absolutely have no idea what to expect come tomorrow night. What I do know is if Buffalo can pull off a win, it puts them a game over 2 of the main #1 seed contenders. This is the most important week 1 we’ve had in the Josh Allen era.

The AFC West could have the Chiefs, Broncos, and Chargers beating each other up so that none of them can grab the # 1 seed.  This season may be the Chiefs biggest challenge for playoff positioning in several years.

My biggest take away from the KC loss is that they have no pass rush without blitzing.  Lesser observations are that they still have a problem at right tackle, most of the secondary looks slow, Chris Jones isn't the dominating guy he has been, and Pacheco hasn't regained the quickness he had prior to his injury.

Even with all of that, Mahomes is still good and dangerous even with a below average supporting cast.

Divisional loss is huge…even if all it does is make them play starters week 17/18 on their path to winning the division still..  they always seem to be freakishly healthy come playoff time and that+ the usual bye has a lot to do with it.

Even their infamous struggle down the stretch year they still got to rest starters because they had no shot at the 1 or 2 seed and had no division competition

I mean that was kinda an aberration…that bills team was never gonna even entertain forcing NE into a divisional race.  Chiefs have two other playoff caliber teams in their division though and just lost to one of them. Having the division locked up so early and usually a bye has let them get really healthy for the playoff push and even if the chargers push them but come up short it’s still a pretty big deal

if we lost to Miami week one and got outplayed equal to what we saw from kc last night I think there would rightfully be a ton of panic around here despite our history of whooping their ass and winning the afc east haha.  That feels like a more meaningful hypothetical here

The Tyreek Effect

People get hung up on the receivers but the chiefs being abysmal at running the football is probably influencing this a lot more than a dropoff in wr talent.  You can pretty much play with the lightest box you want and still stop the run and get pressure on mahomes these days
