Poyer came to the Bills in his 5th NFL season, after being cut by the team that drafted him, and then not being able to crack the starting lineup of the 0-32 Browns. And then became All Pro around year 6-7.

Some things take time.

I hear ya man.  The window has been open since 2020.  It won't stay open indefinitely, it never does.  Need them to develop now.

Poyer is a true Bill through and through.   I have all the respect in the world for the guy.   Love bringing him back on the PS.  At worst he is a great example for younger players.   At best he can play in spot duty.

Definitely. Even though they are just bringing him in for the practice squad why did they wait to make this move until after training camp/preseason is over?  I really think they are more behind at the safety position than they were anticipating this year.  Hoping for the best but makes me nervous this season we see more of the same issues as last year

Because guys like Poyer and Phillips are known quantities, and they also know our system. It's a complete waste of a roster spot (even with 99 of them) to have them around, when you can instead have a young/new player to try out and see if someone pops. one more lottery ticket. If no one shows out, you cut them and bring back the vets that were given the bonus of having camp off and are fresh and ready to go (as practice squad players).

The window is wide open as long as Josh Allen is the QB here.  The window being open or shut is a complete fabrication of the media and used to fill time because they dont talk about the real game of football, they talk about the Soap Opera of football.

My oh my.

He's this year's Micah Hyde, there to get in the head of Bishop and provide vet leadership to the other safeties.

It doesn't help the guys in the room to watch film obsessively if they don't have the top-level knowledge of what they're looking for.

Poyer > Hamlin on instinct alone

Poyer >> Hamlin in his instincts, but No.  Last year it was to be seen that his mind was willing but his body didn't answer the bell.  Instincts only take you so far.

Excellent point.  I forget which young QB it was but he talked about sitting in the film room constantly but it was a waste of time because he had no idea what to look for.   Anyone throwing a fit about adding a former all pro to the practice squad of all places needs to take a breather.

Best reserve DT are a pair of rookies.  Best reserve safety is a rookie.  Phillips and Poyer help Sanders, Walker and Hancock.  They are also pushing Carter and Hamlin who had the worst preseasons of any Bill that made the roster.  Win/win.  Once in football shape I think both replace Carter and Hamlin barring some change in there play.

I’m in. Still better than Hamlin even in his golden years

No.  No, he isn't.  I'm not saying Hamlin is great but he's serviceable, and Poyer just isn't.  His mind is willing but his body can't get him there.

It's like AJ Klein, when the Bills brought him in in 2020, he was 29 yrs old and after some teething pains when he took over for Milano he played well and even took home "defensive player of the week" honors.  But by 2022 he had fallen off considerably, and by 2023 at age 32 he was cooked.  He understood what he was seeing, he knew where he was supposed to be, he simply couldn't get there.

Josh has 8-10 more years (hopefully), so that's our window.

My brother shared the same anecdote a couple of weeks ago.  Pretty sure it was Caleb Williams last year.

Sit with Bishop in each practice and film session.

This additional "help" for Bishop every year seems to be the new "Edmunds is only 21" schtick.

It makes no sense to be that upset with the move.

At best, Poyer is the 4th safety, but as he sits on the practice squad, those ahead of him can learn from Poyer, and the team has time to determine if he's physically capable of stepping in if needed.

All this, but also, I think they use camp as a barometer for what leadership is already in the room.  Bernard, for example, took over the LB room immediately.  It was his room, and he was willing to get in anyone's face when they weren't doing their job. Guy could have 5" and 105 lbs on him, Terrel Bernard don't care.

Rapp can barely control himself.  Hamlin doesn't seem like a "get in your face" kind of guy.  If Bishop was behind the scenes in camp seeing things the way he needs to see them and ready to lead the room, Poyer be home on the sofa now.
