Stevie Johnson ran routes that he made up as he went. It seemed like an improv act at times. And yet…..  🤷‍♂️

EDIT: To be fair he’s talking more about getting off the LOS.

Stevie used to make Darrelle Revis look like trash. He was by far the hardest WR for Revis to cover in the NFL, and some of his worst games of his career were against Johnson.

The Gailey years from an offensive standpoint were fun to watch.

Stevie really benefited from a coach in Gailey that let him do his thing and Fitz who was smart enough to know his routes so to speak.

Stevie had that LOS Allen Iverson crossover in the NFL. His slippery shakes and head fakes were maddening on CBs.

3 straight 1K seasons with Fitzpatrick should tell you everything you need to know. I like Fitz, but c'mon.

Imagine if he had Josh?

Yes he's talking about his release which was super unorthodox

I said a long time ago when he played that it was like a basketballer

Who was just crossing you up and going to open space

Still a very high compliment

30,000 passing yards and over 200 touchdowns show Ryan Fitzpatrick is severely underrated

He was always one of the better players on bad teams.. never the weak link on a good one

Stevie said he used his basketball cross over (AI style as you said) to bust press coverage.  He routinely put Revis Island on ice skates

That was the Chan offense, get out in space!

Seems like the perfect guy to work with Keon on the side.  The teacher being a guy who made his living with basketball moves to get open teaching the d1 basketball player.

I find it ironic Fitz has the Jets the all time record for most touchdowns thrown in a season.  Especially how big a Bills fan he is now.

While I agree with you at the same time though he was nicknamed Picks-Patrick for a reason.  I'll never forget the play McKelvin outsmarted him and picked him off.

well he was a gunslinger in the mold of Brett favre who didn't have the same arm talent

that's why he's not a Hall of famer

I was at that game versus the Jets at home when they needed to beat us to get into the playoffs.. and at the tailgate I was telling all the Jets fans I love Ryan Fitzpatrick but you're going to get Ryan Fitz tragic at the end of the game

And low and behold

He still was a good quarterback he just didn't have the elite stuff and was too aggressive for his arm strength

I just came across this YouTube short. Didn't think he was regarded like that. Just wanted to share

He was one of the only WR's in the league that consistently made Darrelle Revis look foolish that in and of it self is saying something because Revis is a HOF - CB and Stevie had his number ...

WHY SO SERIOUS MR. REVIS ??

honestly I would be curious if the numbers support my theory that he was fitz tragic because he could play within his limitations most of the day to keep it close but didn’t have the arm talent when it was crunch time and everyone was giving 110% and you couldn’t live for another down because you are down 5 with 38 seconds left….

Seemed he was smart enough to know he had to throw it still and see what happened at that point. Even if his arm made it less likely to connect than Josh - still better than running out of bounds short of the sticks,

You basically hit the nail on the head

He was a good quarterback who typically needed a lead at the end of the game

If you got the ball back down six with a minute and a half left that's when some of his limitations would come through.. he had some game-winning drives but the majority of times the limitations would show up in that last minute and a half in crunch time situation when the speed is even faster

I seem to remember a lot of those picks being thrown when there were still downs to spare, which was the most maddening part. It would have been different if it was last seconds, or 3rd or 4th and long, but I felt like it was always 2 minutes left, timeouts in hand, 2 and 7 and he'd take a completely unnecessary risk and throw the game away.
