Mr. Felser was a good man, not just a news reporter.  He was a friend of my Dad’s as my father worked as an executive for the Buff. News for 44 years.  He gave me a job for the News for college from 1986-1991.  It was a great job as it was union wages.  My last year and a half I delivered inter-office mail so basically walked around all day with those large Manila envelopes.  This obviously was pre-internet.

 

I sat in Mr. Felsers office many times as he was always nice to me out of friendship to my Dad.

 

As far as Mr. Gaughan, I didnt know him.  A number of the sports reporters practically lived At One Bills Drive.

I still remember when Larry was the old, grizzled, trusted vet and Mark Gaughan was the youngster out to prove himself.

There was a time when Felser, Carucci, Gaughan & Jim Kelley(Sabres) were all at the BN.  The paper is now a shell of what it once was. 😞

I have not read the paper much the last 30 years since I moved away.  But I once read an article he wrote somewhere around 94 or 95 in which he made reference to the jets record the previous year which was incorrect.  It was kind of insignificant but a portion of his article was null because of it.  I confirmed his error and then wrote him an email and he actually responded in a way that was very professional and acknowledged his error.  I appreciated his candidness and always liked how he wrote.

Also a time when Felser, Carucci, and other notable sportswriters and broadcasters graced the 'roundtable' show pregame.  Insightful commentary regarding the upcoming game and news from around the NFL.

It was also fun listening to the Monday evening radio show with Murphy and Felser.  You could hear Felser's ire rising when Stan from Cheektowaga would call in to belittle Wade Phillips for not wearing a headset. 🤣

I remember the round table with Felser and Carucci.  There were two others, that were also good.  Was one also Van Miller?  Did enjoy and missed it when it ended.

I don't think Van Miller, or any play by play voice was part of the round table.  I think they were saving their voice for actual game calling.  I think Murphy participated, but only when he was colour commentary for Miller.  Carucci participated both as a [BN] sportswriter, and for the period when he went to NFL.com.  Jerry Sullivan might have participated for a season, I cannot recall clearly.  Howard Simon I think I remember at least on a few broadcasts.  There was the ability and practice to rotate notable sportswriters and broadcast personalities through the discussions.  I think a writer for the Rochester D&C also participated.  It was probably the best informed hour of Bills sports talk around.  And no pesky callers! 😁

That's right it was Sal M from the D&C. Think I do recall Sully too.

Here's a good Felser story.  When we were at the Buffalo airport returning from Super Bowl XXVIII Petrino & I saw Larry Felser at the luggage retrieval area.  We go over & say hello and then a group of women not far from his age join the people waiting for their luggage and got all of Larry's attention.
