Poyer and Hyde

Sort of sounds like a personal injury law firm, and in fact these two have been doling out personal injuries for the Bills since 2017. Signed as free agents on the same day in March 2017, these two have been so solid and dependable you almost take them for granted each year.

They both have lost a step or two, but they know this defense inside and out and I imagine their leadership and experience in the locker room and on the field has been a huge help to guys like Taron Johnson and Cam Lewis. Romo was raving about them on Sunday and I think he really understands the impact they have on the game.

Poyer has a year left on his deal but Hyde is a FA and I suspect Hyde may retire given his neck injury history. If we keep Poyer, his cap hit is $7.4m and his dead cap hit is $2m. That's a tough decision for Beane, because what value do you put on keeping Poyer around another year for his experience and leadership in helping the transition to a new set of safeties.

I for one have really enjoyed watching these two play and will miss their impact on the Bills defense, but I suspect that a lot of opposing quarterbacks aren't going to miss them much.

The key in this game compared to the previous 2 KC playoff games is that they don't have to contend with the Mahomes-Tyreek connection.  That was such a mismatch, even before they lost a step.

If the Bills want to keep Poyer, they can. There is plenty they can do around the cap to ensure there is money to resign/extend players and get new guys in. No mega deals, but plenty of scope for mid range targets. It would be a risk getting rid of both in one year.

Send them out with a Super Bowl and let's move on.

They are Bills Legends and will go down as All-Timers, but if I had to guess how this secondary plays out.. Hyde retires, we part ways with Poyer, extend Rasul and Tre restructures to avoid being cut.

I'd like to keep one of them, since Poyer is still under contract, may be easier financially to keep him.  My main reason to keep one is would rather not go through going pains of having two new safeties in one season.  Draft a rookie fairly high for one spot, keep Poyer and then draft another one or sign a FA in 2025 to replace Poyer

Romo was raving about them because he stopped doing his homework a couple years ago. Both are not the players they used to be.

Ultimately they are both massive leaders in the locker room and were probably the best FA pick ups of the McD era. They were instrumental in getting this team out of the drought and to where they are today.

As @DrDawkinstein said, they should both be gone next year, sadly.

Really hoping to get a ring this year for these guys.

If we do win the SB, don't be surprised when half the team retires.

Okay not half the team, but I would not be surprised by Hyde, po, von, Morse at least

I think we can keep Poyer another year.  He's still an average safety and on the market, I think an average safety is going to make about as much as Poyer.

Not sure if it's a good idea changing out two safety's.  I think that's what really hurt the Bengals.

I think Cam Lewis might be our other starting safety next year.

$5.5M in new money for Poyer next season. That seems very doable versus finding two new safeties and getting them both up to speed.

I really hate that I’m responding to this thread while the Bills are alive in the playoffs. Sigh.

I'm hoping that they can turn in an all time performance on Sunday, with all the other injuries on D we'll need that, but I also believe they are capable of it, and are both big game hunters

We've been blessed to have them this long

Cam Lewis should be gone already.  He runs around a lot and is probably a great process guy but never makes a play.

Dude,

I have a 3 year old and a 5 year old dog and I really hate that thoughts creep in my mind every once in awhile that one day they both won't be here and it's probably within 10 years.  Hate thinking about that.

I actually think over the last 4-6 weeks they have looked better. Poyer has looked faster to the ball and tackling has always been solid. Hyde had some key punchouts on Tyreek in the Miami game. You cant discount the mental element to the game they bring and i do feel much more comfortable with them back there than anyone else currently on the roster.

I would agree its probably the last dance for both or at least one. It is an important position for this defense and im sure the front office is considering on how to proceed.

I know there was talk about moving Bentford to safety but after the year he has had at corner i wonder if that is not a consideration anymore.

We could enter next year with Douglas, White, Johnson, Elam on the depth chart that could motivate them to look at that again but a lot needs to fall into place for that.
